The History

The historical context for this conflict goes back a significant period of time. Flemingovianism has been the dominant national religion since the late 1500s. Over the centuries, the Government of McMasterdonia - normally led by the monarch has secularlised, and has gradually phased out the role of religion in it's governing structure. This is most notable with the absence of any legislation defining the national religion, and the fact that religious tests for any office is banned. There is no requirement that the monarch themselves be a flemingovianist.

The Archbishop Gunrei has lobbied the government for decades on religious reform. For most of his life, he was a loyal servant to King Kian XIV - advising him on religious matters. While they often did disagree with one another, there was a mutual respect there. Following the fall of Matilda II - who took on a more radical approach to religion, including the heavy taxing of churches and temples, the Archbishop made one offer to the Regent. His offer was refused, and the Archbishop then was declared Supreme Patriarch of the Church of Flemingovia, with any notion of royal authority over the church being destroyed. The Archbishop is strongly supported by the poor communities, rural workers, and obviously the clergy. He is extremely charismatic and has been able to appeal to the downtrodden masses of McMasterdonia for years. He is a very authoritative individual. To put it another way - whenever he walks into a room, it would fall silent just because of his powerful presence. They might not necessarily know him, but he gives of a strong aura of authority and strength despite his age.

Rosemary Whent's father was arrested by the Kingdom in the late 1970s. He had been charged with corruption, for alleging bribing federal judges and for tax avoidance. He was then exiled from the Royal Court and ordered to remain in Capricornia, where he died, all of his political authority completely eroded. His daughter served in the Senate for years, and then as Duchess of Capricornia. She was famous for using the Royal Court to execute personal vendettas against enemies of her family, and for being highly involved in ballot box stuffing, paying people to vote and to join party protests. She maximised her power when she attempted to become Chancellor during the reign of Matilda II. This appointment was rejected by the Council of State and the Queen, leading Rosemary to resign and take up arms in Capricornia against Matilda II. At this point in time, her power has been seriously eroded by the Archbishops personal authority. She was a key player in the killing of King-Regent Albert and his pregnant wife, Princess Madeline. She was left imprisoned in a small house by Archbishop Gunrei and was burned alive by McMasterdonian airstrikes. Her body was then dragged through the streets allowing it to dismember on the roads of Capriconia. DECEASED

Queen Matilda II was an excellent Chancellor during the reign of her father. Famous for economic liberalisation, and for education reform, there were high hopes for her reign. The early stages of her reign were characterised by in-fighting amongst the royal family, which she attempted to placate by allowing Albert to serve as Royal Commandant of the Armed Forces. The Royal Courts were backlogged during this time with various baseless accusations of corruption and ethics complaints. Her authority in political circles was highly eroded when she made the decision to suspend the senate. She did not properly articulate her argument for that suspension, and was branded a tyrant abroad. This coupled with a failed world tour program and poor standing in the Democratic Union did not do well for her. The Eumenor State Visit was considered to be a positive step in her reign, where she would regain her standing in the international community. She was unfortunately assassinated during this visit, an assassination that was largely blamed on the Government of Eumenor. DECEASED

King-Regent Albert was a well known figure within the military, and was called a 'hammer' by his Father. He had been employed in the 1990's to simply carry out his father's bidding without question. He had a poor relationship with his Mother - who he viewed had favoured his sister over him, and his father who he felt did not appreciate all of his efforts. In 2013, he had forces loyal to him destroy a bullet train of refugees heading for Añola (was Alunya.. but yeah). The Heir Apparent Richard, and the Queen Mother Amira were aboard this train. The attack killed all the refugees on board and was blamed on the Whent terrorists. Whent denied responsibility, but nobody believed her. The King-Regent had tried to keep his Mother imprisoned in the Northern borderlands, but she was released. Following international condemnation, Albert attempted to assassinate the Royal Family of Plembobria, declared himself their King, before ultimately dying himself at the hands of Rosemary Whent. DECEASED

Queen Mother, Amira at the direction of her daughter, the Queen Mother attempted to flee McMasterdonia in secret in 2013. This mission was designed to get her and the heir apparent out of the country in case anything was to happen to the Government. The train they were travelling on was attacked, but the Queen Mother was able to order her guards to take Richard to safety - leaving her behind. There she was captured and imprisoned by Albert for 2 years while chaos reigned in McMasterdonia. She has been by far the most popular member of the royal family, and is seen as a powerful/influential cultural symbol of McMasterdonia. Since taking to the throne, her methods to secure the rule and safety of her remaining close family have been considered as equally as violent as her predecessors. The Queen Mother manages an extreme propaganda machine, that churns out false information about herself and family members to enhance their popularity and mislead their enemies. She has been the target of multiple assassination attempts.

What happened previously:
The King-Regent has lost significant territory to the Flemingovianists, including the Reach, the Southern Isle, and is expected to lose other territory in the coming weeks if it continues as it is now.

The cabinet has been working deliberately to cut back on the power and influence of Albert. This combined with the large economic issues has led to a serious breakdown in communication within the government itself. The Government is almost non-functioning at this point in time.

The King of Plembobria met with the Chancellor of McMasterdonia, also his father, and agreed to send spies into Northern McMasterdonia to search for the Queen mother and prince richard. They were supported by local Lord and son of the Queen Mother, Lord Alexander. They travelled to the northern mountains were they were arrested by local soldiers. The encampment was then attacked by the personal guard of Lord Alexander, as well as by the local native population - an ethnic group similar to that of Great Bights Mum.

Albert became aware of this attack and believed that Plembobria was deliberately attacking the McMasterdonian encampment in a play for power in the nation, designed to free the Queen Mother and see Prince Alexander on the throne. Albert demanded that Tozian leave the Kingdom immediately before the caucus meeting was to be held, where he arrested and killed senior members of the royal family involved in the plot and other plots that sought to undermine his authority as monarch. These arrests and the caucus meeting itself was televised across McMasterdonia.

Albert then declared war on Plembobria and organised the bombing of the Rethel Palace, believing that the Royal Family of Plembobria had been eliminated - along with his mother, Albert then proclaimed himself King of the Plembobrians - knowing that this reflected the succession rules of the Kingdom.

The Queen Mother fled to Plembobria, where she met with Count Gregor, Princess Nara, Tozian and others to discuss a plan of action. They then organised decoys at the palace, before travelling in secret to the Lancerian Empire, to seek the support of Queen-Empress Amelia - a close friend and family member to both Tozian and Amira. With the Lancerian Empire's support, they made a joint statement calling for the abdication of King-Regent Albert and sought support from the International Community for the regency transition.

What has happened recently?
The Queen Mother has secured the return of all provinces under the banner of the Kingdom of McMasterdonia. This has partially been done through bribery, but mostly through brute military force and the surrender of the local warlords. The Queen Mother ordered the murder of the Whent children, ensuring the elimination of the dynasty, and has similarly ordered the mass killing of noble families that were involved in the treachery against her daughter. The Queen Mother has appointed Jessica Whitwell, a veteran and commoner as the new Chancellor. The Chancellor has enforced a renewed security and propaganda apparatus to protect the Monarchy.

The Prince Richard is the subject of intense press speculation as he is rarely seen in the media. He is now 17 years of age and will soon be approaching his ascension to the throne. The Council is keenly aware of this and fears that Amira is losing her grip on reality - and that their allies will not stay silent for long.

The State of Affairs Today

The Factions
The Royal Family
Queen Matilda II - deceased
King-Consort Richard - deceased
King-Regent Albert - deceased.
Princess Madeline - Wife of Albert. Seen to be quite influential on the King-Regent, but is losing her patience. She was involved (in her younger years) in a violent rebellion in the city of Caspius. The city was removed from her rule and given to Prince Alexander. - deceased
Queen Mother Amira - Currently ruling in Intelligentsia.
Princess Wilhelmina- High Priestess of Flemingovianism. Extremely religious - popular amongst the religious community and has made some gains in taking away the support of Gunrei. Very loyal to Albert, is currently imprisoned in Intelligentsia.
Princess Magdalena - deceased, was involved in a plot with the Cabinet and Chancellor Gregor to undermine the power of the King. Admitted to it at the caucus meeting to save her brother's life, she was then found guilty of treason and executed on the spot.
Prince Alexander - deceased, was the Lord of Caspius. Supported Tozian's efforts to rescue the Queen Mother. Shot dead at the Royal Caucus meeting.
Crown Prince Richard - 17 years old, under the care of the Queen Mother Amira in Intelligentsia. Unclear intelligence or competency.

The Gunrei Flemingovianists
Archbishop & Supreme Patriarch of the Flemingovian Church: Gunrei
See what I said above. Elderly man, but fiercely influential and authoritarian. A state under his control would be very different to the one with the Royals. Think post 1979 Revolution Iran. By this point in the story, Gunrei is old and sick - but determined to win.
Brother Benedict: Fiercely loyal to Gunrei, possibly more than Flemingovianism itself.

The Whents
This threat has been eliminated by the Royal Family and Gunrei.

Others
Renae Clark of Ceduna - launched her own militia, and has been doing relief work in the other provinces. Refused to provide any support to Gunrei or the King-Regent. She governs the South West province and is considered to be one of the most moderate & pro-democratic provincial leaders in the country. Her husband was brutally murdered while visiting the Reach, Renae was too busy in the South West Province to visit the Reach so he went on her behalf.

At this point...

The war is drawing to a conclusion. How it will play out is unclear at this stage. Nothing is as it seems.

Future Plans

At this point, the battle field has changed significantly. Whent and her forces are now significantly marginalised due to the massive power of the Archbishop Gunrei and the Flemingovianists.

The Cabinet, including Chancellor Gregor is going to sign a statement of support for the Regency Transition to Amira. This will mean that Intelligentsia will be a full scale battle zone - with the Security forces loyal to the Minister of Security clashing with elements of the Royal Guard and the military. Some of the Royal Guard will defect, but most are loyal to the individual not the institution. The military is going to be quite split.

At this point, I expect the remaining members of the royal caucus may wish to convene and to discuss the issue. This meeting will very likely occur in the Ancient Province - a Royal stronghold, where the flemingovianists cannot get to them.

The McMasterdonian Ambassador to the Democratic Union will post a statement to the body about these ongoing issues, and will discuss the funding of refugee camps - to be established in Añola and Ravenscrown (I have their permission for this).

What I would like to see:

At this point, Nations should be seriously considering who they will support. Will they support the regency transition to Amira? Will they support Albert? Will they suggest that the only way for stability in the Kingdom is for the Archbishop Gunrei to assume power?

This is where offers of support should be made. Diplomatic statements of support for one party or the other will be influential in the way this moves forward. These statements can include recommendations for what should occur following the transition of power; though recommendations may be ignored.

This is the part where taking a side matters. Offers of logistical support, air support, financing, aid, food, and medicine are all relevant at this point.

Any questions? Ask away.

Oh my God, this blows the Great War out of the water. I think story arcs are becoming 'in'.

Syrixia:

I hope so, I think it makes more sense when things develop over time like this one. I would have had no idea what happened in the Great War if it weren't for your mega thread either. It gets so complicated after a while = so many different threads and OOC topics.

I hope to see Syrixia taking a side soon.

Nebula too - though I think you may wish to support the Supreme Patriarch:P

The monarchy has described itself as socialist in it's approach to the economy, but I thought you'd be more likely to support the Supreme Patriarch, because he is a bit more militant/an outsider compared to other international leaders - a bit like your leader is.

Sadakoyama will not endorse either side of this, as doing so would be seen as a tacit endorsement of the legitimacy of investing excess political power in a single individual, especially when passed by inheritance, as that is contrary to our culture and understanding. While most nations will probably see this crisis as a personal failure on Albert's part, we see it as an inherent and inevitable symptom of the system itself. There is a segment of our society that feels this conflict is a positive development, with "royals" killing each other off. If the popular uprising against them were not embodied in the anti-science Flems there might have been some unofficial support in that direction by individual Sadakhan.

Another factor is our reluctance to pressure or influence another culture is that the only sensible direction to push them would be into a system such as ours; but frankly the majority of the world's people are not ready for it, and is a lot easier to invite those few that are to join us rather than cause conflict trying to reshape their own.

That said, we will support whoever deals with us in a fair and civilized manner, except Gunrei. Our only dog in this fight is the extinction of him and his followers, and our patience waiting for the world to get over their schoolyard squabbles and deal with him is wearing thin.

Hmm, this is difficult for me. On one hand, Archegnum has long cultural and familial ties to McMasterdonia. On the other hand, religion is extremely important to the Archegnuman people. However, as the Flemingovians seem to be extremists in this case, I feel that Archegnum should support the McMasterdonian Royal Family in this instance.

I heard from YrKidding that no more military help is required. However, I am willing to open refugee camps and make naval and air bases available to Royalist forces if requested. I am also happy to consider any other assistance requested.

Please get back to me concerning what assistance, if any, is desired!

Gunrei may consider a slow withdrawal from political life if his movement wins, perhaps leaving governing in the hands of less radical clerics. By his own admission, he has sinned as all people involved in a war have. He has much to atone for and may feel that he cannot be alone in his relationship with Flem as an active political leader. Perhaps a distant head-of-state position like the Grand Ayatollah would be in his future.

A reminder to those observing: the Patriarchate, for all its flaws, is internally stable. No one doubts Gunrei's authority. There are not leaders living in Plembobria claiming his seat. Internal political differences are... dealt with before they can lead to strife among the clergy.

Well, Sadakoyama's hope is that that stability will be greatly diminished if he is in our custody or takes a cruise missile up his tuchus, and that the state dissolves into sectarian butchery, as religious empires do, as his successors grasp to claim his power.

Whether one chooses to believe the story we tell about coming from another world, creatures like Gunrei are what drove us from our former home. we will accept no quarter with them now.

Arch - I'll be in contact with you certainly.

Pisci - I am glad that Gunrei is such a polarizing character! Credit to Myroria for that. Admittedly I love the character and would like to see him succeed, in some way.

I haven't had a chance to do my other RP posts yet and have a busy work week ahead, but I promise to get to them as soon as possible.

We can promise him a nice long retirement. We'll use every science trick we have up our sleeves to make sure he lives longer than he'll think possible, or want.

I hope Syrixia's talk show continues because we have some other nice things to say to him. :)

Kudos to McM for summarizing things for those of us who didn't read every last letter and punctuation mark of the above-noted posts. Clears things up considerably.

Alright, so to update the House of Representatives on what has been going on.

There have been numerous calls for the King-Regent to Abdicate. The cabinet, the Lancerian Empire, and the Kingdom of Plembobria being the most vocal supporters for this move. The King-Regent has subsequently refused to abdicate and his forces have been clashing with the Security services.

The Imperium Augustum has taken the territory of Mcmasterdonia near the Imperium under their protective administration. It will remain this way until the war is resolved.

The Queen Amira has made a statement to the democratic union. In that statement she has outlined the war effort plans with the Kingdom of Plembobria, the Lancerian Empire, and Archegnum. She also mentioned that refugee camps will be established in Ravensrown and Anola to help protect civilians from harm...

Any questions?

The DU is now voting on recognising Richard as King of McMasterdonia.

The Imperium has occupied our colony New Intelligentsia. The Governor, Benazir Bhutto, has accepted the occupation and also pledged her support to Amira.

The DU statement by Amira has received 0 response from members. Yay?

Finally, Amira will begin her return to McMasterdonia over the next few days.

Guys, tell me what you think of this.
What I Consider To Be My Greatest Masterpiece Yet:
On behalf of the Parliament of the Syrixian Empire as well as the Syrixian people, I hereby formally proclaim the recognition of King Richard II as King of the McMasterdonians, and Queen Mother Amira as his Regent until His Majesty comes to the age of majority. My Empire believes sincerely that the ongoing conflict in McMasterdonia has become more than just a war. It shakes the very fabric of morality itself. Sovereignty is something that, as intelligent humans, all people groups deserve; and peace is an ideal that, as intelligent humans, all people must strive for. It is in the best interest of the Empire's code of honor, truth, and morality to offer our assistance unconditionally to Queen Mother Amira and King Richard II. Any expenses of such assistance by the Empire will be paid by my Government in full. We will take all the steps needed to ensure that what must be done must be done in a time of crisis. With the coup in Guslantis taking up the attention of everyone in the East, the eastern states forget that humanity is not a mentally challenged species. The Empire has come to the realization that the East can and should pay attention to both wars, instead of only helping another eastern state, not caring at all about those in the West. Western people exist too! Their sovereignty, equality and civil rights must be defended just as the eastern states defend each other's sovereignty, equality and civil rights. And then we come to debt. The eastern states loan money to western nations out of good will, but do they know why the way they are giving money is utterly horrendous? In a time of economic recession, the East expects the West to just pay them back! The East has no notion of debt and its implications on a nation! Syrixia firmly believes in the liberal tenet of helping those who cannot help themselves, as it shows the kindness and purity of the human soul in a world that is anything but perfect. McMasterdonia is mired in war just as Guslantis is. They deserve assistance, free of charge. This is how the East needs to see things. This is not a trivial matter; but one of morality itself. Thus, I hereby affirm once more that Syrixia recognizes King Richard II as King of the McMasterdonians, and Queen Mother Amira as his Regent until His Majesty comes to the age of majority. If the Kingdom of McMasterdonia ever needs the help of the Empire, we will give it. It is the kind and honorable thing to do. The world of Eras must remember; East or West, we are all people.

In hopes for a prosperous future for Eras,

His Magnificence, Maharaja Rajesh III of the Syrixian Empire, Vicar of Prajapati, Defender of the People, Holder of the Ancient Crown

It is a very good statement, I like it and appreciate the sentiment behind it.

One small issue I have, is that I think you misunderstood what I said about debt in the Novrith Conference. Admittedly I was not very clear.

I meant that many of the nations in the East just spend, spend, spend, and spend. It had nothing to do with the West taking aid and then paying it back. They keep spending things on their military, they throw it around at every cause. They don't suffer any economic issues, even if they run the state like North Korea. It's this unrealistic throwing money at everything approach that some states take that I find troublesome. There is no measure to the response, there is little organisational control or anti-corruption measures - for instance/

Let's get Gunrei, Albert, Richard, Syrixia's emperor, and all the others in a circle to sing Kumbaya...

Yo, Tommy, if you want the Empire to help you with the supplies department just give a call. No pay required, no IOU needed. Just good samaritan service.

Kidding did it, so I assume that means it's ok for me to post then. I'll post in the international response thread which isn't invite only. I'll do this this afternoon.

Kidding Is supporting Amiras return so his post was already planned (more or less).

I invited people to donate aid a while back. Medicine and medical equipment is essential. Just no guns or military involvement please :P

Imperium can commit now to assisting in restoring infrastructure following a civil peace. Trucks, public transportation, etc., although those aren't particularly useful at the moment unless you want to build technicals out of them.

We can also provide construction equipment - hand tools, like hammers, screwdrivers, sledgehammers, saws, etc. - either now or following establishment of peace.

I would have pledged aid earlier, but I sort of got bogged down with the whole "yeah maybe we shouldn't be supporting Albert" turn, and also the whole "Albert is an oops" post.

If we're committing resources to aid McMasterdonia, it would be through the New Intelligensian Occupation Government - establishing a provisional McMasterdonian public service to help distribute aid, headed by Benazir and staffed with professors and TAs (we'd pay, for the time being, obviously). A bit less brazen than just pledging it straight to Queen Amira.

Well the Militia of Ceduna is stepping into bigger shoes, becoming an actual force in the conflict kinda. Guns wouldn't be totally unappreciated. :P

Hey McM, can I get an update into the sitch? The Flemist attack on Kannex's Manhatt might affect the Empire's policy towards the region.

Well, not much has happened right now. I'm waiting for The Grim Reaper to RP Albert and Whent's interaction, which is going to be massive. Then I will proceed with the official taking of the capital. He said his post is nearly done and should be up today or tomorrow (he told me yesterday it was a couple of days away at most).

You offered intelligence sharing opportunities to the flemingovianists a while back, you could perhaps reconsider that policy and publicly admit to it? Alternatively, you could motion that the DU/NPTO officially economically blacklists all trade with Gunrei and his affiliates. I suggested this to Syrixia recently but he didn't think it would go anywhere.

Other than that, until the Grim Reaper posts, I would suggest that you operate as though the pro-Amira forces are hours/a day or so away from seizing back control of the capital.

I do think I should continue that. Idk why that stopped. XD. I'll do that this afternoon!

back to the topic of the thread...

I highly encourage people to read Grim's recent posts in full. It is supposed to be one reply, but was too long to fit in a single post. It is incredibly well written and a fine piece of work.
