Speaker of the Chamber of Law Announces Retirement
Isaac Castellan, the Speaker of the Chamber of Law, announced his intent to retire from politics at the conclusion of the current term. Speaker Castellan has been a member of the chamber for six years and rose the ranks of the Solidarity Party quickly with his party-line voting habits and strong-armed debating tactics, earning confidence as speaker in late 2016 following the death of Prince Stéphane. The short stint in government surprised many in the party, leading to questions of intent.
The speaker responded to concerns stating that politics had taken most of his post-University time and that he desired a change in career to allow him the time to focus on other personal matters. The speaker also highlighted a desire to settle down and start a family, believing government to be too much of an interference in that goal.
Responses from other government officials were very supportive of this decision, with Prime Minister Madeline Ellison stating, quote:
Even opposition leader Cicelia Blatherwick had this to say:Madeline Ellison:Speaker Castellan has always served the chamber with honour, integrity and distinction. This loss of leadership will be hard to swallow but, being a mother of three, and soon four children, I know the toll public service takes on someone aspiring towards a family life. I offer my support and wish the speaker all the best.
Castellan's retirement will be effective upon the opening of the new Chamber of Law following the 2019 elections. Whoever becomes Speaker following the elections will also be Acting Prime Minister during the remainder of Miss Ellison's anticipated maternity leave, adding further drama behind the announcement.Cicelia Blatherwick:Mister Castellan has always been a strong voice, and there is no other person I would want to have daily debates in the chamber with. Regardless of ideology, he's been a shining example of civility that I will miss.
Bill to Override Princess Claidie's Veto of Sutherland Embassy Fails
Following frustration from Princess Claidie's veto of approval for the proposed embassy opening in the Sutherland Federation, Princess Alice and Prime Minister Ellison jointly submitted a bill for consideration to remove embassy establishment as a power of the Regency and grant the same as a power of the Chamber of Law in which a Bill could authorize embassies with only two-thirds approval from the Regency.
The bill did not, however, carry popular support in the Chamber. The Peerage, in an unusual display of solidarity with Princess Claidie voted unanimously with her, with eight of the twenty-four elected also voting with her, resulting in a 16 to 21 failure of the bill. The most prominent of Claidie's antagonists, Baron Thomas Whittemore, noted the status of the Sutherland Federation as being not entirely recognized by foreign governments and its theocratic executive body as primary opposition points.
The failure of the bill leaves the proposal for an embassy with the Sutherland Federation virtually dead unless some change in Claidie's opinion occurs. To date, she still has not given any public explanation for her opposition to it, leaving pundits to only speculate that it has to do with her opposition to faith-centric governance and theocratic rule.
CORRECTION: The original story stated a "personal opposition to organized and government supported religion in general." A spokesperson for Princess Claidie responded, calling that statement a mischaracterization of her views and highlighting opposition to theocracy. The story has been updated accordingly.
