MANY people preparing to travel to the airport today may have been faced with the news that their flight has been impacted by the sudden closure of Heathrow Airport.
Despite this airport closing, and many flights being diverted to other big city airports, Wales' primary airport has confirmed they are "operating as normal" amid the current circumstances.
According to a spokesperson from Cardiff Airport, they have only experienced one diverted flight from Heathrow today, namely a Virgin Atlantic A350 from Bridgetown in Barbados which landed in Cardiff at 6.42am on Friday, and it has been confirmed that the passengers from this flight have since left Cardiff Airport.
The spokesperson has also said that the airport is continuing to operate as normal with no disruption, and according to the official website, there are no impacts on any scheduled flights to and from Cardiff.
The spokesperson added: "We're currently not expecting any further diverts as a result of Heathrow's closure."
Flight tracking website Flightradar24 said that an estimated 120 aircraft were already in the air when the closure at Heathrow was announced, at approximately 2.30am on Friday.
It showed flights being diverted to Gatwick, Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and Ireland's Shannon Airport. A number of flights were also turned around and returned to airports in Canada and the United States.
A statement released by Heathrow Airport at around 3am on social media said: "Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage.
"To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March."
"Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience."
Heathrow is expected to remain closed for the remainder of Friday.
