Uniting Shipping Companies into a World-spanning Business

Marine Marchande Internationale began as a trust in 1891, founded by three shipping magnates from Mezoraico, Predice, and Saintonge: Dettert Bernardo of Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Galania, Tiburzio D'Rienzo of Linee Prediceane, and Corneille de la Bellette of Nordmittelreicher-Marine de Commerce. They supported the vision of Santonian politician François-Joseph Écuyer, who coined the term "Special Relationship." He dreamed of "an alliance of Predicean and Santonian lines under a single management." This was ultimately achieved in the amalgamation of the shipping companies as subsidiaries. The project, funded by Jean-Pierre-Morgan Beaumarchais, dominated transmeterran shipping through interlocking directorates and contractual arrangements with the railroads.

By the 1900s, the ruling National Party in Saintonge started cracking down on monopolies and introduced strict anti-trust laws. The negotiations led to the Santonian government takeover of Nordmittelreicher-Marine de Commerce. In 1931, the Predicean government nationalized DGG and Linee Prediceane. It was in the Predicean Union's interests to quickly expand its merchant navies to facilitate the combined economic demands of its newly established single market. In 1998, DGG and Linee Prediceane were re-privatized to raise new capital and encourage competition.

Today, MMI, a leader in the global shipping industry, has restructured into a multinational holding company. It is jointly owned by the Santonian government via FNS and Società Navigazione di Predice, a consortium of Predicean private interests. After the latest negotiations in 2024, the MMI Board of Directors equally represents the stakeholder leadership: 4 directors each are appointed by FNS and SNP, with a rotating chairmanship between them every four years. NMC phased out its remaining passenger division and now runs the majority of MMI's deep-sea cargo routes. The passenger routes are divided between DGG and Linee Prediceane, retaining regional cargo and ferry routes and maintaining focus on mid-tier and adventure cruises.

MMI subsidiary brands operate semi-independently under centralized oversight. Each brand specializes in services that extend beyond cargo shipping and cruises, such as passenger ferry services and inland and port terminal infrastructure.

MMI Group Companies

The holding and its family of brands also provide services in port terminal infrastructure, air, rail, and road offerings. These companies comprise the core cargo and passenger divisions of the MMI Group.
