Repeal: “Timber Production And Sale Oversight”
Category: Repeal | GA #740
Proposed by: Simone Republic, Co-authored by: Imperium Anglorum | Onsite Topic
Replacement: Sustainable Timber Standards

General Assembly Resolution #740 “Timber Production and Sale Oversight” (Category: Environmental; Industry Affected: Logging) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

The World Assembly,

Acknowledging that food supplies are needed to prevent starvation, that reduced supplies of food increase prices for food, thereby harming ordinary people's standards of living while also posing threats to the political stability of member nations,

Accepting the fact that sometimes old growth forests need to be cut down because member nations may need farmland to grow food to feed people,

Dismayed that GA 740 Timber Production And Sale Oversight imposes substantial restrictions on the sale of timber from such farmland, making it difficult for member nations to pay for the equipment and start-up costs associated with setting up those farms (that again are needed so to have land on which to grow food to feed people),

Believing that it is unfair to entrench historic inequalities by rewarding nations that deforested first with huge advantages in arable lands for food production while, at the same time, making it difficult for hungry nations without large amounts of arable land to become self-sufficient,

Troubled by the kind of economic relations which could emerge in such circumstances which would put nations with large populations and little arable land into a forced economic dependence on historically-advantaged food producers, and

Accepting that it is likely that replacement legislation will be brought to mollify the environmental harms without these harms, hereby

Repeals GA 740 Timber Production And Sale Oversight.
Note: Only votes from TNP WA nations, NPA personnel, and those on NPA deployments will be counted. If you do not meet these requirements, please add (non-WA) or something of that effect to your vote. Overview
This proposal seeks to repeal General Assembly Resolution #740, "Timber Production and Sale Oversight," which currently imposes significant restrictions on timber sales from cutting down old growth forests. This repeal intends to ease the economic challenges faced by developing nations, who need to clear the forests for agricultural purposes to combat food shortages and production.

Recommendation
The existing restrictions of GA #740 create substantial barriers for nations that need to deforest land to grow food, thereby making it harder for them to manage start-up costs and become self-sufficient. This proposal is justified as it seeks to alleviate these economic problems and avoid creating inequitable economic reliance on historically-advantaged agrarian member states, while also addressing potential environmental impact through future legislations.

For the above reasons, the Ministry of World Assembly Affairs recommends a vote For the General Assembly proposal at vote, "Repeal: Timber Production and Sale Oversight”.

This IFV Recommendation was written by Brisdon in collaboration with the Ministry of World Assembly Affairs.

For. This is originally a resolution from IA, I merely campaigned on his behalf.

The rationale here is that some countries that chopped down their trees before passing this resolution (such as Great Britain IRL) won't have to pay any costs for stopping the chopping down of old growth forests (since they don't have much), but others that didn't chopped down their trees beforehand and kept their old growth forests can't use the land for development that anymore (say Papua New Guinea) and they don't get any compensation for it.

What's with the change to the title format? Now all caps, and including "for" on a proposal that's still in queue...?

A majority of the votes are in favour, so I have changed the title to reflect that position. Naturally, if the vote swings to against or abstain, the thread title will also be changed to reflect that. It's just a way of keeping track of where the vote is at a glance.

Accepting that it is likely that replacement legislation will be brought to mollify the environmental harms without these harms

I assume the above means IA or someone else has already started writing one?
