International Confederation of Populists

The International Confederation of Populists is an association of political parties advancing populist politics.

Populism is a multi-tendency, left-wing political movement loosely characterized by its base of support in the rural poor ("The People") and which generally advocates for an interventionist economic policy, a well-funded welfare state, and skepticism of financial institutions. They can also harbor hostility and resentment for big business and residents of urban areas, although this varies between organizations.

The International Confederation of Populists was founded on April 30, 2023, by the Populist Party of Callise. Itself a splinter from the Social Credit Party, the Populist Party was formed by the left-wing fraction of the group which would form the Populist Party of Callise. Their original international affiliate, the Global Association of Social Credit Parties, was exclusively for parties which adhered to Social Credit. By contrast, the International Confederation of Populists is open to a wide-range of Populist tendencies. Rather than a joint political program, the ICP is guided by the Big Three Principles of Populism, coined by Louis Berger, a Callisean populist politician from the late 19th Century:
  1. General Welfare (i.e. state support for the poor and dispossessed, especially in rural areas)
  2. Agrarian Economics (i.e. market controls, regulations, and tariffs designed to protect farmers and the rural working poor)
  3. Controlled Banking (i.e. regulation of financial institutions, and strict controls on the market for assets)
Membership in the International Confederation of Populists is not to be granted to members of the Federation of International Conservatives. This is a consequence of the association of the Populist Party of Callise with the governing Workers Party of Callise, members of the Nationalist League of Callise in the aforementioned federation, and the Populist Party's own support for left-wing economic populism.

The organization's headquarters are in Sainte-Beaudoin, Callise.

To The Leadership of the Vallish Federalist Party:

Upon review of your application, we have decided to reject your entrance into the International Confederation of Populists, on several accounts.

First, membership is restricted to those who are not members of the Federation of International Conservatives. That organization, founded in part by National Union and Nationalist parties of Goyanes, plays host to many of the same political parties of big finance and big business which populism necessarily aims to oppose. If your organization truly wishes to oppose international finance, you will withdraw from the international of big finance at once.

Second, it is not immediately clear to us that your organization adheres to the Big Three Principles of Populism. Despite all the rhetoric of opposing the big Vallish banks, the Federalist Party continues to affiliate with the parties of finance capital that call the Federation of International Conservatives home. Moreover, your organization has shown dubious support for Agrarian Economics and General Welfare. To your organization, it appears populism simply means stirring up trouble on the international stage, while implementing virtually none of the populist economic program at home.

Third, your organization has actively betrayed the principles of populism. We refer, in particular, to the decision to form the North Gotic Economic Council. A brazen attack on the economic liberties and securities of the hardworking people of Valland, and an unconscionable concession to big business. Any political party which claims to stand for the people cannot betray their politics to appease big business or score political points.

Should the Vallish Federalists rectify these issues, we would be willing to reconsider their membership. However, at present, we find far more fruitful common ground in Valland with Norbert Ritter's Social Creditors than with the Vallish Federalist Party.

Signed,
Nicole Brunelle
