The SSV Ulm 1846 Journal

The first "newcomer" already runs his laps between 10 and 11 o'clock in the morning: Lenn Jastremski is one of a total of six newcomers who run over the red tartan track at SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball on Monday. Tall, exactly 1.90 meters measures the 22-year-old, he is in a group with David Grözinger and Lukas Ahrend. A center forward, a defender, a center player.

Piiiep - the short signal that is supposed to give the runners orientation sounds again and again. Three times they run in circles around the lush green playing field. Six weeks later, there is still a big hole where the kickoff should be. From the promotion celebration - and somewhat too euphoric supporters. The "damage to property" has not yet been repaired, says the groundsman. The soccer players will probably have to pay around 30,000 euros to replace the lost substitutes' benches with Recaro seats and the goals. The center hole is to be treated soon - the blazing sunny days did not allow for reseeding. So I guess pieces will have to be transplanted from the sideline to the center. There is still some time.

Sports physicians from Ulm on duty at SSV Ulm and 1. FC Heidenheim

Piiiep. On the tartan track, the players repeatedly stop at the pavilion set up by the sports physicians from the University Hospital in Ulm. Dr. Sebastian Schulz, who is also the athletic trainer for the Spatzen, and his assistants take blood samples from the men. The values they are interested in is the lactate formed and the pulse. "143," one of them calls out before they're already on the next lap. Continuously they increase the speed. 16 kilometers per hour is the must. "Exhaustion" is what sports physician Schulz calls it, who will conduct the same test next week at Bundesliga promoted 1. FC Heidenheim. Is there actually more to measure and test now that Ulm is playing in the 3rd League? "We've had the high level in performance tests for about four years now," Schulz explains. What he notices is that while initially it was individual players who delivered very good results, the breadth has now increased significantly.

Endurance, strength, mobility. That's what the sports scientists are asking with their performance tests. So it happens in the interior underneath the main grandstand that university intern Eric Schwarz asks the soccer players one by one to step onto a black square and make them jump up four times. From a crouch and in motion. The span should be between 40 and 60 centimeters - goalkeeper Marvin Seybold manages one of the highest jumps at 55 centimeters. Returnee Felix Higl also seems satisfied for now. "Top 5," says sports scientist Schwarz, dismissing the 1.93-meter striker for the lactate test.

Sascha Risch and Felix Higl bring third league experience with them

The mood is good, the anticipation of what is to come in League 3 is palpable. In an almost five-hour measurement marathon, head coach Thomas Wörle is able to welcome 30 players to the Donaustadion. Missing from the championship team: Marcel Schmidts, whose contract was not extended, Finn Paul and Hendrik Hansen, whose work contract expires in four days. There will be no more reunion. The club said goodbye to the central defender on Monday evening via press release. Soccer coach Wörle makes no secret of the fact that in the squad will still "movement reinkommen". With a target of 27 players, that is also logical.

The coach says: "Everyone under contract will be part of the squad in preparation." He does not give details on foreseeable departures. One thing is clear: if nothing happens on the players' side, the club will have to suggest to one or the other that they leave in the coming weeks.

In the shadow of the main stand, Max Brandt, Tom Gaal and Julian Kudala are waiting for the go-ahead for their lactate test. They are wearing the black Ulm training gear for the first time and fit together well: Three U23 players, 22, 22 and 21 years old, from Ottensen, Mönchengladbach and Stuttgart. None of them has a past in Ulm. Not even Sascha Risch, who is currently running his last laps. Like Tom Gaal and Lenn Jastremski (22, on loan from FC Bayern Munich II), he only signed with the Spatzen on Monday - just in time for the start of training. Risch, 23, a full-back, comes from Meppen and, with 60 appearances for SV and SC Freiburg II, brings the most third-league experience of the six "newcomers" after Felix Higl (63 games for VfL Osnabrück).

A good match, very exciting.

The SSV managed to equalise to an 1 to 1 and got a draw, which is pretty good considering we played against Saarbrücken, who fought for promotion on the last matchday last season.

So let's goo, woo! I am still waiting for a few videos and images to share here :)

It's time to return this thread once again!

Next important home games

Hello everyone, it's time again to post something in the thread about my absolute favorite club!

SSV Ulm 1846 currently plays in the third German league, a professional soccer division which is fantastic!

The first half of the season is over, and SSV Ulm has even made it to third place! This means, that if they are still in third place at the end of the season, they can either be promoted directly to the Second Bundesliga (!!!) or beat a potential relegated team from the Second Division through relegation. That's absolutely fantastic and truly a miracle, but as a fan of SSV, I'm not convinced yet. We are a relatively small soccer club and our fan scene, our Ultras, is not yet that strong. We would be completely embarrassed if we were promoted to the second division. At the same time, we're already not even playing in our home stadium, but in Aalen because of the bad weather. Maybe we wouldn't even get a license to play next season.

We should first re-establish ourselves in professional soccer and build a new stadium, of which there are already initial plans, and then think ahead.

New Team Sponsor for the SSV Ulm 1846

SSV Ulm 1846 Football now has a new team sports partner.
Teamstolz from Munderkingen will supply the Spatzen's youth players with training clothing in future, and a separate team sports store has been set up for the players.
Teamstolz will also handle the finishing of the uhlsport team merchandise for the fan store and the finishing of the players' jerseys.

The company has already been a partner of SSV in the past and is now providing the club with comprehensive team sports support.
Teamstolz will be present at the Spatzen's home games with corner perimeter advertising, among other things, to promote the partnership in the region.

Managing Director Markus Thiele: "With Teamstolz, we have gained a regional and experienced team sports partner. We are very grateful that Teamstolz has agreed to support us in such a short space of time. We are pleased that we are competently positioned in this area."

Michael Reiser, Managing Director of Teamstolz: "It is a pleasure for us to be the official sportswear supplier of SSV Ulm 1846 football.
Our collaboration represents a close connection to the team spirit and passion for the sport. We are proud to support SSV Ulm 1846 Football on and off the pitch and look forward to many successes together."

Coach Wörle about the newcomer Strompf
Coach Thomas Wörle: "Strategic commitment"

Strompf is the new central defender in the third division club's squad. However, the 25-year-old will not be eligible to play until January. He was last under contract in the Swedish second division. "After this time, it was important for us to see what he's capable of," said head coach Thomas Wörle, who welcomes Strompf as the first new winter signing. "I'm really pleased that he's joining us. That will be good for our team." The competitive situation will change once again, Wörle looks ahead. "But that's good for everyone because it will boost performance once again." The coach says that the signing is a strategic transfer: "It's not as if we have a problem at the moment where we have to react."

Strompf is set to play on the left wing. Thomas Geyer played in this position in the 3-0 win in Verl, which was due to a change in the back three. Lamar Yarbrough, normally on the left, was on the bench. Tom Gaal moved into the chain and to the right position, Geyer switched sides. As usual in this constellation.

Strompf will start training on January 2, 2024. On this day, the Spatzen start their short winter preparation. There are only three weeks until the first competitive match against SpVgg Unterhaching (January 21, 2 p.m.). One test match has already been arranged for this time: Ulm will play against second division side Karlsruher SC, who were beaten 2-0 by the Spatzen in November. More is being planned. However, one thing is already certain: There will be no training camp this winter. Last season, SSV Ulm traveled to Turkey and prepared for seven days in Lara. This winter, it will be at home. "It won't be a typical preparation where you do endless fitness training," says Wörle. They won't lose too much during the break, which starts on Thursday. "We'll get back into our normal training routine relatively quickly."

But first, the Spatzen still have a task to complete. On Tuesday (7 p.m.), they play 1. FC Saarbrücken at the Ludwigsparkstadion. The DFB Cup shockers have not lost in six consecutive league games and held league leaders SSV Jahn Regensburg to a 2-2 draw on Saturday. "It's the last game before Christmas. Both will throw everything into it again," said Wörle, who has no absentees to complain about in the English week.

Daniel Reichert becomes managing director
On 01.01.2024, Daniel Reichart will become the new head of the SSV Ulm 1846 football office.
The 39-year-old will take over the Finance and Administration divisions and will further optimize and professionalize the internal processes in the office.

Daniel Reichart worked for the Müller drugstore chain for 19 years, including as a district manager, and most recently worked for RHG Reisacher Holding as an extended managing director and authorized signatory.

Managing Director Markus Thiele: "We are delighted that we have been able to recruit Daniel Reichart. He brings a great deal of experience from the business world to our association and we are convinced that we will be able to significantly improve our internal processes once again."

After the winter break!
The winter break has barely begun when it is already over. After two weeks, the third-division club SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball players are returning to the training pitch. Next Tuesday at 11 a.m., the coaching team led by Thomas Wörle will reassemble the squad. They will then have three weeks to prepare for their first competitive match of the new year - against SpVgg Unterhaching on January 21 at 4.30 pm. The game will take place at the Spatzen's alternative home in Aalen.

Wörle spent the Christmas holidays with his family. "The batteries are already pretty well recharged," reports the 41-year-old. The break over Christmas and New Year's Eve is important - for the body, but above all for the mind, "the mental side", he says. After all, everyone involved has had "a fascinating year with crazy impressions". The promotion in the summer, the first win in the third division, games in a sold-out Danube Stadium, exciting performances in foreign arenas - all of this has brought great joy but has also drawn energy and cost strength.

The coach assumes that everyone will be on board for the start of training. The players have been given individual running plans. They are not allowed to lie around completely during the break. "We want to get back to intensive training relatively quickly," says Wörle. However, this is only possible if the players maintain a certain fitness level.

Philipp Strompf will also be involved on Tuesday. The 1.94 tall central defender has moved to the Danube from Swedish second-division club Vasteras FK. The 25-year-old defender has signed a contract valid until the summer of 2025 and will be given shirt number 32. Thomas Wörle has not ruled out further winter signings. "There may still be movement," he says. In principle, the transfer window is open until the end of January. However, nothing more will happen before the start on Tuesday, emphasizes Spatzen spokesman Max Rieck.

First test match at KSC
An intensive spring awaits the impressive promoted team from Ulm, which is in third place in the table at the end of the year, with home games against Waldhof Mannheim (February 10), MSV Duisburg (January 27) and FC Ingolstadt (February 24, both at 2 p.m. in Aalen) as well as guest games in Bielefeld (January 24, 7:30 p.m.), at RW Essen (February 17), 1860 Munich (March 2) and Dynamo Dresden (March 16, all at 2 p.m.).
That makes footballers' hearts smile, including the coach's. "These are great challenges. We're looking forward to it," says Thomas Wörle. The first test match for his team in the new year is already a week away - next Friday (1.30 pm), the Spatzen play host to second-division side Karlsruher SC.

Top Transfer to be expected!
The break only lasted a short time. One day after the turn of the year, SSV Ulm 1846 soccer started its first training session after the winter break. New signing Philipp Strompf will also be taking part on Tuesday morning. As the SÜDWEST PRESSE has learned, the 25-year-old will not be the only transfer this winter. The Spatzen are about to make a top transfer. It is centre forward Thomas Kastanaras from VfB Stuttgart, who will be signed and expected in Ulm this week for a medical check.

The 20-year-old is a member of the Bundesliga team in Stuttgart. However, he has mainly been gaining match practice in the Regionalliga Südwest. Kastanaras, who has a market value of €700,000 according to the online portal transfermarkt.de, made his Bundesliga debut on September 17, 2022. He came on as a substitute shortly before the end of the 3:1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt. Three more appearances in the top flight followed in the 2022/23 season. In May 2023, the 1.86-metre striker was set back by a metatarsal fracture. After recovering from the injury, Stuttgart's Kastanaras returned to the pitch in September 2023. Since then, he has made eight appearances for VfB Stuttgart's U21 side, in 5th place in the Regionalliga Südwest at the winter break, scoring six goals and providing one assist.

w1000_h563_x522_y339_Kastanaras.jpg-cec42e71a260b26e.jpeg

According to the SÜDWEST PRESSE, Kastanaras, who has a contract in Stuttgart until 2025, is to be loaned out to third-division side Ulm for the remainder of the season. In November, Kicker had already reported that the 20-year-old talented striker was considering a loan to "gain match practice at a higher level than in the Regionalliga (with VfB II)". Top strikers Serhou Guirassy and Deniz Undav are on a roll in the Bundesliga third-placed squad, making it impossible for the German-Greek Kastanaras to move up shortly.

Before the start of training for the Spatzen, head coach Thomas Wörle had not ruled out the possibility of "possible movement" in the Ulm third division squad during the transfer phase. Additions and departures are conceivable. The transfer window is open until the end of January.

According to yesterday's article, Kastanaras is indeed moving to Ulm for a loan period

Kastanaras on loan
Thomas Kastanaras has joined SSV Ulm 1846 Football from VfB Stuttgart and will strengthen the Spatzen until the summer.

The 20-year-old striker has been trained at VfB Stuttgart since the U9s, went through all the youth teams and made his Bundesliga debut in 2022. Since then, he has made three more Bundesliga appearances and 38 games for the U21s in the Regionalliga Südwest, in which he scored 16 goals and contributed four assists.

In the 21/22 season, Kastanaras was top scorer in the A-Junior Bundesliga.

Thomas Kastanaras was born in Stuttgart, played seven international matches for the Greek U-national teams and two international matches for the German U20. He will wear the shirt number 24 at SSV.

Managing Director Markus Thiele: "With Thomas Kastanaras, we are gaining an excellently trained striker who enjoys a high reputation at VfB Stuttgart. He is a young player who can help us with his qualities, but who we can also support in his further development. This must also be SSV's path in the future."

Thomas Kastanaras: "I'm looking forward to playing for SSV Ulm 1846 in the second half of the season and want to help SSV achieve its goals. After many years in Stuttgart, I'm looking forward to the move to the Danube."

2024-01-02_Jastremski_Abgang.jpg

Loan of Lenn Jastremski ends
The loan of Lenn Jastremski will end prematurely and the striker will leave SSV Ulm 1846 Football with immediate effect. This has been agreed by SSV, FC Bayern Munich and Lenn Jastremski.
The 22-year-old did not take part in team training at the start of training today.

Jastremski has played one match for SSV this season in the 3rd division and two matches in the wfv cup, scoring one goal.

Managing director Markus Thiele: "We would like to thank Lenn for his commitment over the last few months. Unfortunately, he did not get the playing time with us that all parties had hoped for and we have therefore jointly decided to end the loan prematurely.
We wish Lenn all the best for the future, both athletically and personally!"

"We're happy to be together again," said a visibly cheerful Thomas Wörle on Tuesday after the first training session of third-division club SSV Ulm 1846 soccer before the second half of the season, despite the fierce gusts of wind that increasingly whistled around the players' ears on the pitch behind the opposite stand of the Danube Stadium. At least it stayed dry. The Ulm coach had almost his entire squad together, apart from Bastian Allgeier, who was not fit. Only four players had dared to attend the two-hour training session in shorts, including captain Johannes Reichert.

The new additions to the SSV Ulm 1846 soccer squad
The two new winter signings Thomas Kastanaras from VfB Stuttgart and Philipp Strompf from Swedish club Vasteras FK were also on the training pitch. While the signing of central defender Strompf until June 2025 had already been clear for a few days, SSV 46 only made the loan of the 20-year-old centre forward from VfB until the end of the season official on Tuesday. "In Thomas Kastanaras, we are acquiring an excellently trained striker who is highly regarded at VfB Stuttgart," explained managing director Markus Thiele. "He is a young player who can help us with his qualities, but who we can also support in his further development. This must also be the path SSV takes in the future." More here and here

The loan of Lenn Jastremski will be terminated early with immediate effect. This has been agreed between SSV, FC Bayern Munich and the player. Jastremski has played one match for SSV this season in the 3rd division and two matches in the WFV Cup, scoring one goal.

"Healthy competition"
Wörle does not want to overestimate Kastanaras' high market value of 700,000 euros, as estimated by the portal "transfermarkt.de", even though Kastanaras is the most expensive player in the SSV squad. "We know how to assess that quite well. He is very talented, but the youngest player in the squad. He has already made a few Bundesliga appearances, but has never played in the third or second division." Instead, the coach is looking forward to "healthy competition" in the team, not just in the centre of attack with Felix Higl. "We need that, it's good for us." Kastanaras, who is not quite as tall as some of his fellow strikers, finds his way through the defence as a playing striker, giving the coach more alternatives. And it doesn't always have to be either-or: In the final game on Tuesday, Higl and Kastanaras were in the same team.

The Stuttgart native, who came through all the youth teams at VfB and played seven international matches for Greek U-teams and two for the German U20s, already feels very comfortable at SSV 46. "It's a great club and a great team that sticks together," says the top scorer in the A-Junior Bundesliga in the 2021/22 season. With whom he wants to "play a good second half of the season and get the maximum out of the games".
Second test match against Augsburg

Central defender Strompf, who was in trial training with the Ulm footballers before Christmas after the end of the season in Sweden in November, also wants to build on the "perfect previous round" and continue there. "Philipp has already experienced a lot," says Wörle about the defender from the Swedish second-division club. The 25-year-old hopes to fit into the team quickly and use his experience to help him. This will be possible for the first time on Friday when the Spatzen play a test match at 1.30 p.m. at second-division club Karlsruher SC. Ulm's second pre-season friendly is scheduled to take place on January 14 at FC Augsburg, mainly against the players who will not be playing for the Bundesliga club the day before against Leverkusen.

Coach Thomas Wörle

Test Match against the Karlsruher Sport Club (second division)

While the third division footballers of SSV Ulm 1846 set off for their first test match after the short winter break with reinforcements, hosts Karlsruher SC have started their preparations for the second division without any additional personnel. Nevertheless, coach Thomas Wörle and Ulm will probably face an opponent in a better position than in the friendly match in November, which the newly promoted third division team won somewhat surprisingly 2:0. Back then, KSC coach Christian Eichner was missing several protagonists.

One is missing for the opener
Wörle has almost the entire squad for the game on Friday at 1.30 pm. Only Bastian Allgeier is missing, as he was at the start of training, due to back problems. However, the coach hopes that the former Karlsruher will return soon. The game will be played four times for 30 minutes, "a little longer to give all the players match practice," says Wörle. The coach explains that it is important to get used to the tempo again quickly in the short preparation period, "to be ready to compete". The game against an excellent team will help, he says. Finding their feet step by step and improving within the game is what he wants to see from his players.

First minutes for the new players
New signings Thomas Kastanaras and Philipp Strompf will also get their first playing time for SSV Ulm. For the Ulm coaching team, it is "important and exciting" to see how the two present themselves in competition with the new team. The young centre forward Kastanaras, who was only loaned from VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday, is still staying in a hotel but is looking for a home in the region for the second half of the season. The match against KSC is one of two preparation matches for Ulm. The second will take place on January 14, 2 p.m., at FC Augsburg (first division).

Reichart heads up the office
SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball has also restructured its organizational structure. Daniel Reichart has been the new office manager since January 1. The 39-year-old is responsible for the Finance and Administration divisions and is tasked with optimizing and professionalizing the internal processes in the office. "He brings a great deal of business experience to our club and we are convinced that we will be able to improve our internal processes once again significantly," explains Managing Director Markus Thiele. Reichart worked for 19 years as a district manager for the Müller drugstore chain and most recently as managing director and authorized signatory at Reisacher Holding.

SSV loses 4:0 to KSC in first test

Starting position
In the first test match of the winter preparations, the 12th of the 2nd Bundesliga and the third of the 3rd league meet. KSC defeated SV Elversberg 3-2 at Wildpark before the winter break, while the Spatzen were beaten by 1. FC Saarbrücken.
The match lasted 2 x 60 minutes, Thomas Wörle used all the players, and only Bastian Allgeier did not play due to injury.
SSV played in all white, KSC in blue.

The course of the match
The game got off to a fast start, with Christian Ortag and Tom Gaal having to work together to prevent a KSC double chance after just two minutes. Our team repeatedly tried to free itself from KSC's pressure in the tightest of spaces. Both teams played at a high tempo and Philipp Maier had the first Spatzen chance after 20 minutes but was offside. Towards the end of the first quarter, SSV became more entrenched in Karlsruhe's half, with Lucas Röser, Léo Scienza and Felix Higl having further opportunities but narrowly missing.
Higl had the best opportunity after 35 minutes when he failed to beat KSC keeper Drewes one-on-one. Thomas Wörle's team were now in the ascendancy and created good opportunities to take the lead.
There was a short break after 45 minutes, followed by a further 15 minutes until half-time. Not much happened during this time, SSV was still the dominant team, but the goal was still missing.

Both sides had eleven new players on the pitch after the break. Dennis Chessa had the first shot but missed narrowly. Thomas Kastanaras also failed to score shortly afterwards on his debut for SSV.
It was now an even game in which the Spatzen continued to play their way out of many situations. However, KSC now exerted more pressure on the Ulm goal, but the backline held firm.
Shortly after the last short break, however, the hosts took the lead with a remarkable goal (94'). Luis Dettling gave Marvin Seybold no chance from 18 meters.
Just two minutes later, SSV had another opportunity: Sascha Risch tried to head a chip ball from Nicolas Jann over the goalkeeper, but was decisively thwarted.
Our team tried to equalize in the final phase, but Kastanaras put the ball over the goal after preparatory work by Tobias Rühle (110').
Instead, KSC went one better and scored through Ben Farhat to make it 2:0. Just one minute later, Marvin Wanitzek made it 3:0 and Igor Matanovic made it 4:0.

Conclusion & outlook
In the end, the result was too clear. SSV were the better team in the first half but failed to score a goal. In the final phase, KSC then scored three times in a very short space of time.
SSV will play another test match in preparation. Time and place to be announced.

Does SSV refer to SSV Ulm or is it another club?
There are a lot of other clubs called SSV, but in this thread, it always refers to my SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball.

SSV stands for Schwimm- und Sportverein, Swim and Sports Club and is quite often used for other clubs. For example, SSV Reutlingen, the absolute arch-enemy of SSV Ulm, or SSV Jahn Regensburg, from Regensburg, also on the Danube.

At the same time, SSV is also called something else, in this thread you will find the following:
1. SSV
2. Ulm
3. Die Spatzen or The Sparrows

It always refers to the SSV Ulm 1846!

The third-division footballers of SSV Ulm 1846 ultimately conceded a 4-0 defeat at second-division club Karlsruher SC in their pre-season match. "In the end, we made too many mistakes and made it too easy for our opponents," said Ulm coach Thomas Wörle. For long stretches, his players not only stood up to the higher-ranked KSC but at times dominated the game. The goals came late, only in the fourth period of the 120 minutes of play.

Dicey situations at the start
The 825 spectators in Karlsruhe's Grenke Stadium witnessed an increasingly courageous performance from Ulm. They did have to survive a few dicey situations in the early stages, with goalkeeper Christian Ortag and Tom Gaal having to work together to prevent a KSC double chance after just two minutes. "But I liked that the team improved throughout the game and put in a good performance," said Wörle.

Higl fails alone in front of the KSC keeper
Philipp Maier had the first Spatzen chance after 20 minutes but was offside. Towards the end of the first quarter, SSV became more entrenched in Karlsruhe's half, with Lucas Röser, Léo Scienza and Felix Higl having further chances but narrowly missing. Coach Wörle's team were now superior, with Higl having the best opportunity after 35 minutes when he failed to beat KSC keeper Patrick Drewes one-on-one. New signing Philipp Strompf was also involved in the first half. Like the second new signing, centre forward Thomas Kastanaras, the defender showed great effort and commitment in the second half. "They fitted in relatively well," explained Wörle, who also noted that there were still coordination problems after such a short time. "They still have to adjust to the team, but the team also has to adjust to them."

Two teams for each half
Although the preparation is not always about the result, the Ulm players were annoyed after their spirited performance that the result was so high in the end. "The result doesn't match the game," explained the coach. Ulm also had good spells in the second 60 minutes against a KSC who, like SSV, sent a completely new team onto the somewhat bumpy pitch at half-time, but had split their regular players between the two teams. "But it also shows that you must be very focused at the end," said Wörle.

The goals in the final phase
The KSC fans had to wait until the 94th minute for a goal: Luis Dettling gave Marvin Seybold no chance from 18 meters. KSC went one better in the closing stages and scored in the person of Louey Ben Farhat to make it 2-0. Just one minute later, Marvin Wanitzek made it 3-0 and Igor Matanovic 4-0. After training and post-match preparation on Saturday, the Spatzen will have a training-free Sunday on the schedule before entering the second week of preparation.

To the death of German football legend and "Kaiser" of German football, Franz Beckenbauer from Dieter Hoeneß

The sad news comes late in the afternoon. Franz Beckenbauer, the Kaiser of German soccer, died at age 78. His death is moving. Coaches, players, officials and former companions from the region are also moved. "It's a sad day for German football," says Dieter Hoeneß. "Franz Beckenbauer was a personality who was important beyond the soccer world." Born in Ulm, he was a player under team boss Beckenbauer at the World Cup in Mexico. That was in 1986. "He gave me a lot as a coach. He was a fine person. That shaped my image of him." Hoeneß remembers someone who, despite his elegance as a footballer on the pitch and his charisma off it, was a modest person. "You had the feeling that he could do anything," says Hoeneß, who emphasizes: "He brought a great World Cup to Germany. It was something special that Franz achieved with the 2006 summer fairytale. Germany once again flew its flag with pride."

Dieter Hoeneß: "He brought a great World Cup to Germany"
Beckenbauer, who was in poor health, had withdrawn in recent years. The two soccer greats last saw each other on the sidelines of an FC Bayern Munich golf tournament. At the end of the phone call, Hoeneß again emphasises how sad the news makes him feel.

Anton Gugelfuß feels the same way. Years later, the former chairman of SSV Ulm 1846 soccer club still remembers the two times he met the soccer idol of his childhood in person. Once was at the Preis-Schafkopfen, a card tournament organized by FC Bayern Munich for club members. The other time was at the 1991 construction trade fair, where Gugelfuß was present as a window manufacturer and Beckenbauer as an advertising partner of his main supplier Schüco. "When he came in, a crowd of photographers gathered," the 64-year-old recalls. That was shortly after winning the title at the World Cup in Italy under coach Beckenbauer. Normally, a monument should have been erected for the future DFB official for the World Cup in his own country in 2006, says Gugelfuß. But then the suspicion of corruption arose and the summer fairytale faded: "That ruined him." The ex-SSV chairman certainly wants to remember the soccer legend that the Giesingen native became. However, there is one term that bothers him. "Franz Beckenbauer was never on a level with others where you would have thought you were talking to a shining light."

Spatzen coach Thomas Wörle says: "He was undoubtedly an exceptional footballer and coach, but also a very special personality." The two, who had points of contact through FC Bayern Munich, never met.
With his "human nature, he was always a great role model for me," says Stefan Reuter. The soccer official, who was manager of neighbouring Bundesliga club FC Augsburg until mid-September, says: "Everyone in German soccer owes him a lot, and we world champions of 90 owe him a lot in particular." Reuter was part of Bayern's World Cup squad in Italy and made six appearances at the tournament under Beckenbauer: "The news makes me very sad because we are losing a particularly great person in Franz."

This is also the opinion of Florian Krebs. "As a soccer fan and as a fan of FC Bayern in general, it's sad to hear that one of our country's greatest legends has had to leave us," says the former captain of SSV Ulm 1846 and current player of district league club TSV Langenau. He emphasizes: "What made him special for me was his personality and how he dealt with things. With his ease and positive attitude to life and charisma."

Ex-Ulm captain Krebs: "One of our greatest legends"
In addition to his footballing skills, Krebs has a talent for imitating dialects. In his professional days, the "Kaiser" regularly greeted the Spatzen fans in Ulm, who are always happy to share old videos on social media platforms. Krebs also earned the sympathy of viewers during an appearance in the ZDF sports studio as a voice impersonator. "In combination with his Bavarian dialect, it was always amusing to listen to him. It also inspired me to parody Franz Beckenbauer here and there." Now it's forever: Servus Kaiser, servus Franz.

Preparations of Ulm, as well as the cold weather

The cold weather of the past few days has disrupted training for the third-division footballers of SSV Ulm 1846. The Spatzen have not even been able to train on the training pitches this week. On Wednesday, when the team was off training, there was still some frozen snow on the pitch behind the Danube Stadium.

No training possible on the training pitches in Ulm
That wasn't the problem, it was the sub-zero temperatures that caused problems. This made it impossible to train on the hard surface on Monday and Tuesday. "We made the best of it," says Max Knauer. The Spatzen's assistant coach was responsible for the most recent sessions. After the 4:0 test match defeat against Karlsruher SC, head coach Thomas Wörle had to withdraw due to illness. Goalkeeping coach Holger Betz is also ailing and two players complained of flu symptoms. Bastian Allgeier, on the other hand, is on a very good way back, says Knauer. The Ulm right winger, who only played 16 minutes in the 20 games up to the winter break, was struggling with back problems. However, the 21-year-old should be able to return to action shortly.

"The boys are stepping on the gas," says assistant coach Knauer, who has only had to stand in for the head coach once in the past two and a half years due to illness. In the last few days, however, things had to be a little different than usual anyway. "On Monday, we went for a run along the Danube and later trained in the Halo," says Knauer. "That was the way out." The Spatzen already had a plan B in their pocket. In case it wasn't possible to train in Friedrichsau due to the cold and snow. They had agreed with SV Jungingen that they could switch to their artificial turf. The pitch is from a newer generation than the one used by SSV Ulm 1846 Football at the main club's tennis courts and would have been easy to play on in principle. However, just in time for the farmers' protests, the clearing tractor in Jungingen went on strike, which should have ensured that the pitch was clear of snow. And so the third division footballers first had to put on their running shoes and then head to the gym. The next day, they went to the indoor soccer pitch in Merklingen, where the Spatzen had already trained several times.

Test match against Augsburg without spectators

The next two training sessions are scheduled for Thursday. Where and what will be trained is still to be decided, says Knauer. After all, the temperatures should rise again. The training week will conclude with a test match against FC Augsburg. According to the club, however, this will take place in private and therefore without spectators.

League action resumes in eleven days: The Spatzen play against SpVgg Unterhaching in Aalen on January 21. Due to the short preparation time, the Ulm footballers decided against a training camp. Unlike Dynamo Dresden. The promotion candidates travelled to Belek in Turkey. However, it was not the cold but the rain that put paid to the second-placed team's plans. Two planned sessions had to be cancelled after the pitch was closed as a result.
