Rail services across the majority of the Wales and Borders network have resumed following Storm Goretti but disruption expected throughout Friday

Heart of Wales

Passengers urged to check before travelling on Friday 9 January as Network Rail and Transport for Wales teams continue to work around the clock to clear lines, inspect infrastructure and restore services safely following the storm.

Storm Goretti brought severe conditions across the Wales and Borders route, including frozen points, compacted snow on tracks, fallen trees and power failures in multiple locations.

While some lines were not directly affected, services were altered and sections of the network were temporarily closed as part of a safety-led approach, in line with Met Office advice.

While many routes have now reopened, passengers are advised that there will be residual impacts to services throughout the rest of Friday as teams continue recovery work and safely return the network to full operation.

Some services may will be delayed, amended or cancelled at short notice.

Passengers are strongly advised to check before travelling as some disruption may continue throughout Friday 9 January, as recovery work continues.

Disruption on the Heart of Wales line and between Shrewsbury and Birmingham is expected to continue into Saturday 10 January.

Up to date information on rail services can be found at https://tfw.wales/service-status/all-updates

Network Rail colleagues remain on the ground clearing remaining snow, removing debris, repairing faults and carrying out inspections.

Nick Millington, Route Director for Network Rail Wales and the Borders, said, “Storm Goretti brought extremely challenging conditions across the route, including heavy snow, high winds and freezing temperatures, which resulted in issues in several locations. Our teams have worked tirelessly through the night and are continuing today to clear lines, repair damage and inspect the railway so services can restart safely.

“While much of the network is now reopening, there will be some ongoing disruption today as we complete recovery work and return the railway to full service. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience and our colleagues and partners for their hard work in very difficult conditions.”

Patrick Allinson, Head of Control Operations at Transport for Wales added, "We're pleased to be restoring services following Storm Goretti, and we'd like to thank our colleagues and passengers for their understanding.

“Please continue to check before you travel and allow extra time for your journey. Take care when travelling to and from stations as some surfaces may still be slippery."

Nick Westcott, CrossCountry's Service Delivery Director, added: “Storm Goretti has had a significant impact on the CrossCountry network, particularly across the West Midlands, and the past 24 hours have been extremely challenging for both customers and colleagues. Heavy snowfall in the Birmingham area resulted in several trains being stranded and prevented access to our depot, meaning many trains were unable to refuel overnight. Ongoing difficulties for crews travelling into Birmingham have further affected operations.

“As a result, services today are severely disrupted. There are currently no services operating from Birmingham towards Manchester, Nottingham or Cardiff, with only a limited service running on other routes. Our teams are working around the clock with Network Rail to manage the impacts of the storm while maintaining a safe service. Customers are strongly advised to check before travelling"

Rail tickets for Thursday 8 January remain valid for travel up to Sunday 11 January.

150th anniversary of Settle to Carlisle line supported by Michael Portillo

Ribblehead Viaduct

The new year marks the 150th anniversary of the Settle to Carlisle Railway Line.

The line has come a long way since the first passenger train ran along it, and it is now a diversionary route for the West Coast Main Line.

The line is not simply a celebration of heritage or tourism, but has been crucial in connecting communities, with bi-mode Class 805 Evero trains running through the beautiful landscape.

Michael Portillo Letter

In 1989, when the line was at risk, Michael Portillo, then Secretary of State for Transport, was included in the letter of reprieve.

He later became the Honorary President of the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line, a role he has supported ever since.

He sent a message to the Friends to celebrate the anniversary year:

“In April 1989, I wrote to the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line, announcing that the proposed closure of the Settle-Carlisle Railway Line would not take place, and the line was reprieved.

At that time, I charged the Friends to work to support and promote the line, and suggested the formation of a registered charity (The Settle-Carlisle Railway Trust) to help raise funds to preserve and restore this magnificent line. Both organisations have worked tirelessly since that time to achieve those aims; and I am delighted to see the extensive programme of work and celebratory events that they have planned for the 150th Anniversary in 2026.

As Honorary President of the Friends, I am very pleased to extend my support, and to thank all those involved in the 150th Anniversary. I would encourage everyone to make time to visit and ride the line to experience the spectacular setting and fascinating heritage, and to witness the wonderful dedication and passion of its splendid volunteers.”

Michael Portillo

The anniversary celebrates the lines past and how it has become a valuable source of connection.

There are currently plans for numerous events throughout the year to celebrate the milestone, details of which are available online.

$386 million order to see hybrid locomotives built

train.jpg

R255 hybrid battery-diesel work locomotive

Wabtec Corporation of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, USA has secured a $386 million order from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of New York for R255 hybrid battery-diesel work locomotives.

This is a follow-on order and includes both locomotives and spare parts. It is part of the MTS’a Capital Plan to upgrade the infrastructure of New York’s transit network.

The additional locomotives will also improve the capabilities and safety of maintenance staff.

The locomotives will be built at Wabtec’s design and development centre at Erie in Pennsylvania, with a planned delivery date starting in 2027.

Planned to replace ageing equipment, the new locomotives incorporate state-of-the-art hybrid traction units, which will deliver enhanced reliability and operational efficiency, and improve the air quality across the network.

Maintenance crews will benefit from the new locomotives with zero emissions when they are operated on battery power, which will improve working conditions, especially in tunnels, during subway construction, maintenance, and repairs.

The locomotives are rated at approximately 500 kwh and can operate in “battery only” mode for several hours, which is especially useful when working in confined work zones and for moving work trains when power to the third rail is switched off.

Advanced features of the new locomotives include CCTV cameras and video recorders to capture images of the track, lineside assets, and signalling equipment, as well as onboard diagnostics to support smart maintenance.

In 2023, Wabtec Corporation secured a multi-million-dollar contract to supply brakes and couplers for New York City Transit cars.

The company has a manufacturing facility in the UK at Barton-under-Needwood in Staffordshire.

“The success of the R255 hybrid locomotive is a tribute to the strong working relationship between Wabtec and the MTA. Our collaboration positioned this locomotive as the ideal solution to maintain the subway system efficiently and reliably.”

Alan Hamilton, Wabtec Vice President of Engineering
