Severn Valley Railway to welcome steam locomotive 61306 Mayflower

unknown.png

LNER B1 No. 61306 Mayflower is set to visit the Severn Valley Railway for a short visit as part of testing its newly installed air-braking system.

Whilst the locomotive will not haul any public services, the visit of Mayflower is part of an agreement between Locomotive Services Group and the Severn Valley Railway.

The B1 has never visited the railway before and is just one of two class members that survive into preservation today.

Mayflower follows on from visits from 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley, 34046 Braunton, 70000 Britannia and 46100 Royal Scot in visiting the SVR for testing in recent years.

Testing will take place from Monday 31st October whilst no SVR services are running, having been halted whilst the railway prepares for its Christmas schedule.

Mike Ball, chairman of Severn Valley Railway, said:

“Over recent years, we’ve strengthened our relationship with Locomotive Services Group and we are very pleased to be hosting them again, along with another of their impressive engines.”

“This is the perfect venue for us,” said Ian Walker, head of steam locomotive engineering for LNWRH, part of LSG. “The main line connection at Kidderminster makes accessing the SVR very easy. With no public services due to run on test days, we’ve got 16 miles of track to put our crews through their paces. We’re delighted to be working once again with our friends and colleagues at the SVR.”

I found a couple of videos of locomotives mentioned recently.

They are certainly worth a watch.

The first one was filmed at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

I've been there a couple of times.

Well worth a visit.

I took a train from Pickering to Whitby.

A fantastic time. :)

After being bought by Jeremy Hosking's Locomotive Services Group, and fitted with an air braking system, B1. 61306 Mayflower, makes her first appearance out of Crewe diesel depot!

Sadly, due to electrical issues, she is still not able to run by herself on the mainline.

BUT she is seen here leaving Crewe hauled by D8107 and D8096, and arriving at the Kidderminster, the Severn Valley Railway, where her new braking system will be tested.

Mayflower looked fabulous as did the 20's, and sounded too!!

Derailment of a tram near Highbury Vale tram stop

Derailment of a tram near Highbury Vale tram stop, Nottingham, 30 September 2022.

A picture of the scene following the incident involving the Nottingham tram
unknown.png

At about 07:17 hrs on 30 September 2022, a tram derailed at a set of points located just south of Highbury Vale tram stop on the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) system.

Although the tram was in service, there were no passengers aboard it when the accident occurred.

The tram, which was travelling north from David Lane tram stop, was intended to take the left-hand route at the points, towards Phoenix Park.

However, as the tram reached the toe of the switches, the points involved moved to a mid-position, causing the tram to derail.

The tram was moving at approximately 11 km/h at the time of the derailment.

No injuries resulted from the accident, although some damage was caused to tramway infrastructure and to the tram itself.

We have undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, we have decided to publish a safety digest

Steam locomotive 80097 withdrawn from service after large boiler tube failure

unknown.png

BR Standard 4MT No. 80097 has been withdrawn from service after it failed with a blown large boiler tube.

In May 2022, 80097 was withdrawn to have all 157 small tubes replaced following issues.

It is just four years since 80097 returned to steam, in which a major cost was the complete rebuild of the boiler by a specialist company, costing the Bury Standard 4 Group £130,000 – and was expected to last over ten years.

The group is yet to pay off the £7,000 cost of replacing the small tubes, and now face a £40,000 bill for the latest issue.

80097 is now not due to return to traffic until Spring 2023, meaning the group will miss out of vital steaming fees in the busy Christmas season.

The group says that they hope to make as much progress as possible on their current project, Ivatt 2 No. 46428.

West Somerset Railway-based steam locomotive 9466 gets new boiler ticket

unknown.png

Jonathan Jones-Pratt has announced that GWR Pannier No. 9466 has passed its steam test following maintenance.

The locomotive now has a new 14 month ticket, allowing it to haul passenger trains at heritage railways.

Jonathan says that it is planned that 9466 will complete test runs on the West Somerset Railway in November.

Following test runs, the locomotive will then be at the West Somerset Railway to support the railway’s winter operations.

Come 2023, the locomotive will then be able to haul passenger trains at the West Somerset Railway and other heritage lines, should offers of hire be placed.

And for those of you wondering.......

Jonathan also confirmed that 9466 has kept its mainline equipment and its mainline registration, meaning it could be seen on the mainline network.

The Rail Trolley Trust add a further Small Track Machine to its fleet.

unknown.png

The Permaquip Panex Clip Extractor 54/187 or 54187 has now been added to the Rail Trolley Trust’s fleet

The Rail Trolley Trust became aware that 54187 was no longer needed by the Rother Valley Railway and was looking for a new home back in February 2019.

The Trust made it known that they would be interested in the vehicle and discussions with David Felton of the Rother Valley Railway saw a fantastic conclusion with the machine being kindly donated to the Trust.

The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns alongside a number of other factors meant that the Permaquip Panex Clip Extractor could not be collected from the Rother Valley Railway at Robertsbridge in East Sussex until the 21st of September 2022.

The collection and move of 54/187 was carried out by Calcutt & Son and saw its successful and efficient delivery to The Tanat Valley Light Railway which is close to Oswestry in Shropshire and joined the Rail Trolley Trust.

unknown.png

The vehicle’s original information is as follows:
  • Permaquip Panex Clip Extractor
  • Permaquip Works No. 205
  • Built-in 1980
  • Running No. 54/187 or 54187
The Rail Trolley Trust does not hold technical or operational documentation including paperwork relevant to the vehicle and is asking if anybody is able to help with locating or is able to provide any documentation to please get in touch.

The recent launch of a substantial public fundraising appeal by the Trust aims to raise around £10k but hopes to reach nearer the £20k mark.

The vital funding will support the movement of more of the Trust’s collection into two secure locations whilst providing more appropriate accommodation for its older and more historic vehicles.

The funding will also provide an excellent opportunity to make headway on a number of important restoration projects.

Cardiff bay biodiversity improvements

Transport for Wales is working closely with station adopters Cardiff Bay Rotary to make improvements at Cardiff Bay railway station.

unknown.png

As part of TfW’s Green Routes project, Cardiff Bay railway station has seen enhancements to the station environment and a boost to biodiversity in the local area.

This includes replacing existing shrubs with plants for improved biodiversity and pollinators, as well as sensory plants to increase passengers’ well-being.

Dr. Louise Moon, sustainable development programme manager at Transport for Wales, said:

“The role and impact our station adopters, like Cardiff Rotary Club, have had on our network are immeasurable. We’re striving to create a network that connects communities to each other, a network closer to nature and a network that delivers value to all the people of Wales and its borders.

“Thanks to the Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature scheme and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we’ve been able to begin placing the railway stations back into the heart of the communities they serve.”

unknown.png

Steve Jenkins, Cardiff Bay Rotary member said:

"Cardiff Bay Rotary has a voluntary membership with experience in a range of occupations. Our common bond is that we wish to give something back to society and undertake humanitarian projects which benefit those in need, locally and in the wider world. We are part of an organisation of 1.2 million members in over 200 countries.

“We are proud of the community we live in and, building on the experience of other Rotary clubs in Cardiff, the importance of partnering with Transport for Wales in maintaining a great environment for visitors to Cardiff and people who live here.

“Consequently, we are delighted to have this opportunity to serve our community"

Transport for Wales was awarded £100,000 from the Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature scheme and the National Lottery Heritage Fund to enhance local biodiversity at and near its railway stations.

As part of the Green Routes project, we’re introducing green features at 25 of our stations and in five community areas. Enhancements will include planters and wildlife boxes to boost local biodiversity across the network.

Pupils’ artwork makes an impact at Holyhead Railway Station

Station artwork designed and created by pupils from Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi has been proudly displayed at Holyhead Railway Station.

unknown.png

The station artwork project, facilitated by Conwy Valley and North West Wales Coast Community Rail Partnership (CRP) and British Transport Police (BTP) and funded by Transport For Wales and Avanti West Coast, saw Year 10 pupils design and create five pieces of art, three of which were graffiti murals which are now displayed at Holyhead Railway Station.

Graffiti artist Andy Birch, Dime One North Wales Graffiti Art Murals, supported the young people to design artwork which focused on key messages around rail safety and safety in water as well as promoting mental health and tourism in Holyhead.

The project also helped breakdown existing barriers and build relationships between the young people and BTP who were in attendance during the creative sessions to explain the importance of safety at stations.

Alison Barker, BTP PCSO said:

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with The Conwy Valley and North West Wales Coast CRP and the students of Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi on this project. As PCSOs working for BTP an opportunity like this to get to know and engage with our local community is wonderful. The artwork is amazing and a credit to all who took part. We particularly enjoyed working in class with the students, getting to know them and breaking down barriers that can sometimes stand between young people and the police.”

Youth Worker Sharon Bibby said:

“It’s been a real pleasure to work on this project. The pupils have had an amazing experience with Andy and the spray paints. New skills have been learnt whilst having fun and gaining a new qualification. We can’t wait to see our art displayed at the station.”

Twenty pupils were involved in this inspiring project, and each will gain a qualification for their work as part of their Prince’s Trust Community Project module.

The project was shortlisted for a Community Rail Award this year in the Involving Children and Young People category.

Melanie Lawton, TfW’s Community Rail Manager said:

“The station artwork gives a sense of place and ownership to the pupils and communities it serves. Credit to the pupils and community teams for the positive engagement, the end results are wonderful to see and brightens up the station for passengers and staff.”

Permaquip Permaclipper PC017 donated to the Rail Trolley Trust

unknown.png

Following a donation of a Permaquip Panex Clip Extractor, the Rail Trolley Trust has added a Permaquip Permaclipper track machine to its fleet of small track machines.

Last February Bob Foster of B&R Track Services approached the trust to advise it that the Permaclipper which was stored on the Churnet Valley Railway at Cheddleton was no longer required, and looking to find a home for it.

After some discussions about adding some small track machines to its fleet, the Trust’s Board agreed it was an obvious next step.

As a result, and after some further discussions, B&R Track Services agreed to donate the Permaclipper to the Trust.

On 22nd June, Dawson (Structural) Engineering Co. Ltd transported the Permaclipper from Cheddleton to the Tanat Valley Light Railway, near Oswestry, where it joined trust’s Shropshire Collection.

The Permaquip Permaclipper was built in 1984 and is fitted with a Lister TL2 diesel engine. Its works number is 017 and running number is 91637.

The Trust understands that it ceased to be used it developed an electrical fault that prevented it from starting.

However, the Trust has copies of Operating Instructions and Parts Lists for both the Mk III & Mk IV versions in its Technical Library, which should help in restoring the machine.

The Trust is now looking to raise a minimum of £10k, and hopefully nearer £20k, through a public fundraising appeal.

Funds raised will go towards moving more of the Trust’s collection to its two secure locations, increasing the suitable storage accommodation for some of its older and more historic vehicles, and making further progress on several important restoration projects.
