Cardiff Airport's history, from Spitfires to jumbo jets

The city has had an airport to call its own since 1931, and until 1954 air travellers flew from the original site at Pengam Moors, on the eastern side of the city.
The foundations of the current airport - some 15 miles from the city centre in the neighbouring Vale of Glamorgan - were laid in World War II with the need to train Spitfire pilots.
Bulldozers began clearing the site at Rhoose in 1941, and RAF Rhoose went fully operational in April 1942 as a satellite of RAF Llandow, which had taken over a pre-war airstrip. The RAF’s 53 Operational Training Unit arrived at Llandow in 1941, and having to train pilots from many Allied countries put the runways there under great pressure, so Rhoose airfield was opened.

One of the first aircraft to use Rhoose airfield was a Spitfire of 53 OTU which landed on its belly! Its engine had failed and it needed to land quickly. The pilot, Sgt Davey of the Royal Canadian Air Force, walked away unhurt. He lost his life flying in the Middle East in 1942.

The Spitfires of 53 OTU were based at Llandow and used runways there and at Rhoose until May 1943, when they moved to RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire. Rhoose lay dormant until February 1944, when No 7 Air Gunnery School moved in temporarily while repairs were carried out at its main base, RAF Stormy Down, west of Bridgend. It left in August 1944.

Meanwhile the airfield became somewhat congested because No 587 Squadron Target Tugs was also using it, for Anti-Aircraft Cooperation duties, before returning to RAF Pengam Moors in May 1944.

By late 1944 the war situation had changed significantly, and preparations were made to shut down RAF Rhoose because it was no longer needed. Rhoose came under the wing of No 40 Group Maintenance Command and in November 1944 became a sub-site of No 241 Maintenance Unit (MU) based at Newport Docks.

Rhoose was also used for storage. No 59 MU, which had been formed in Gloucestershire, absorbed Rhoose as an explosives storage site from June 1945. The entire unit later moved to Rhoose but was disbanded in 1947. The airfield closed in 1948.

From 1948 Rhoose airfield was disused for several years while Llandow became a terminal for commercial civilian flights. In 1950 a plane arriving from Dublin crashed near Llandow’s runway with the loss of 80 lives.

Its commercial value was recognised in the following years when the main runway was opened in 1952 to accommodate the Aer Lingus service to Dublin.

Before and after the war, Cardiff had scheduled flights to various destinations, including Paris, from Splott aerodrome, south east of the city centre. The remaining flights transferred from Splott to Rhoose in 1954.

Passenger facilities were improved and further routes added, and in 1962 more than 100,000 passengers passed through the airport.

In 1965 the airport at Rhoose was transferred from the Ministry of Defence to Glamorgan County Council. Its first trans-Atlantic flight took off in 1971.

Cardiff Airport 1972

Prince Philip opened the airport's new terminal building in 1972. The development included a control tower and the runway was doubled in length to cater for larger, wider, passenger jets on transatlantic runs.

As the range of charter flights grew, passenger numbers for these services passed 250,000 in the early 1980s.

In 1986 a further 750ft was added to the runway, allowing it to handle Boeing 747 jumbo jets.

Successive runway extensions enabled the airport to meet demand for larger aircraft. The 2.4km-long runway also caught the eye of British Airways, which in 1993 opened one of the world’s largest maintenance hangars here. The facility at BAMC carries out heavy maintenance on aircraft, belonging to BA and others.

Passenger numbers for scheduled flights from the airport reached 100,000 per year in 1990 and overall passenger numbers at the airport were approaching 750,000 a year in 1993.

In 1995 the airport was sold to TBI, a Welsh property company. It reverted to public ownership in 2013, when it was bought by the Welsh Government for £52m. It continues to operate as a limited company.

Royal Air Force BAe 146 ZE708 call sign "Ascot 1944" on a visit to Cardiff Airport 10/02/2016.

unknown.png

The BAE 146 was an airliner manufactured in the United Kingdom by British Aerospace, BAE Systems and Avro International. The first flight was on 3 September 1981 and introduced into service in May 1983 and is still active today. I was built between 1978–2001. Total number built 387 (Avro RJ: 166; BAe 146: 221).

unknown.png

Manufacture by Avro International Aerospace of an improved version known as the Avro RJ began in 1992. A further-improved version with new engines, the Avro RJX, was announced in 1997, but only two prototypes and one production aircraft were built before production ceased in 2001. With 387 aircraft produced, the Avro RJ/BAe 146 is the most successful British civil jet airliner programme.

unknown.png

The BAe 146/Avro RJ is a high-wing cantilever monoplane with a T-tail. It has four turbofan engines mounted on pylons underneath the wings, and has retractable tricycle landing gear. The aircraft has very quiet operation, and has been marketed under the name Whisperjet.

unknown.png

The BAe 146 was the second aircraft, after the Concorde, to use carbon brakes. The aircraft features a low amount of composite material, used in parts of the secondary structure only.
The 146 was introduced into Royal Air Force service in 1986 as a VIP transport and is operated by 32 (The Royal) Squadron.

unknown.png

In 2012, the Royal Air Force (RAF) announced it would acquire the BAe 146M as an interim transport aircraft between the retirement of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules and the introduction of the larger Airbus A400M Atlas, to supplement its air transport activities in Afghanistan.

The Vueling flight from Cardiff to Malaga took off at 09:30 BST on Tuesday

The first holiday flight has left Wales after rules changed to allow trips abroad again.

The Cardiff to Malaga flight on Tuesday morning took off despite the first minister saying foreign travel was "best avoided".

Wales now has a traffic light system of travel, like in England and Scotland, meaning countries are categorised due to risk.

Rules surrounding travel in Wales have been lifted slowly over the past few weeks, with First Minister Mark Drakeford saying more restrictions could have been lifted if not for concerns about the Indian variant.

Shortly before the Easter holidays, travel restrictions changed, allowing people to journey outside their local area for the first time in months to see loved ones and to go on holiday.

On Monday all holiday accommodation in Wales was allowed to reopen and people were allowed to travel abroad for a holiday.

Mr Drakeford admitted his advice against foreign travel was not a rule because it would be "unenforceable", with many people from Wales flying from Manchester, Bristol and London airports.

Although he said people "should not feel guilty" about holidaying abroad, he said they could consider staying in Wales as an alternative.

How does the traffic light system work?

Countries are categorised into red, amber and green categories.
  • Green: No quarantine is needed on return to Wales, but you must book and pay for a PCR test on or before day two of their return
  • Amber: It is a legal requirement to quarantine for 10 days at home on your return. You are also required to book and pay for PCR tests on day two and on day eight
  • Red: Quarantine of 10 days on arrival at a designated UK port in a government-managed facility at your own cost, starting from £1,750 per person
All those who do not follow the rules for red-list countries face fixed penalties of £10,000.

Unlike in England, Wales does not allow an additional test to be taken on day five to reduce the period of quarantine, which it says is due to 30% of people who develop Covid-19 doing so after day five.

If people from Wales do travel abroad, Mr Drakeford said there would be "extra assistance" when they return from countries where the decision to put them on the green list was "more marginal", including Portugal, Israel and Singapore.

9H-NHS Visits Cardiff, May 26, 2020

unknown.png

9H-NHS, Airbus A340-642 of Maleth Aero, seen here at Cardiff Airport passing a row of B.A. Covid-19 park up's whilst on route to Bournemouth.

European Aviation is planning to convert up to ten A340s into freighters by the end of this year, founder Paul Stoddart has told FlightGlobal. Thus far, the UK-based aircraft broker and lessor has converted at least three A340-600s, 9H-NHS (msn 736), 9H-EAL (msn 622), and 9H-PPE (msn 787), into makeshift freighters with Malta's Maleth-Aero (DB, Malta Int'l) their operator. All three are used to ferry personal protective equipment from Asia to the UK.

Stoddart said European Aviation believes cargo will continue to be an under-served market and therefore plans to reconfigure up to ten A340s into freighters by the end of the year.

In the long-term, Stoddart European Aviation wants to convert passenger A340s into freighters permanently. It will apply for the requisite supplemental type certificate, which it hopes to have by the end of September. While fire suppression equipment will be required in the main cabin, no large side loading door will be installed as, according to Stoddart, European Aviation has managed to develop a loading process using its existing doors wherein a conveyor ramp and an onboard roller system are used for the upper deck. As such, the loading/unloading process has been reduced to just four hours.

So far, European Aviation's A340s have been plying flights using cabins whose seats have been completely removed. Cargo, however, has been limited to lightweight packages under a temporary exemption from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Stoddart said that with fuel prices at historical lows, the A340-600's cost-effectiveness as a makeshift freighter has soared given its extended range as well as its ability to haul 40,000 kilogrammes of freight in its passenger cabin as well as 52,000 kilogrammes (equivalent to 14 PMC containers) in its belly hold.
