Welcome to the Pataliputra 2020 Odinspyl Games! This is the thread where results for Group B sports will be posted.
In addition, this is the place for posting RP/news posts related to your nation's Group B sports teams. Posting RP or news posts about your teams will increase their odds of doing better. Post if you want your team to succeed!

Silien National Swimming Team obliterated in early runnings

Day one of the swimming programme in Pataliputra proved to be a disappointment for the Silien national team, as only 100m women's backstroke competitor Emma Asselin made it into the top thirty while her compatriots fumbled around in the very back of the field.

The blame game was in full swing with coach Jacques Lahaye under fire; the government's tourism deputy, Mélanie Lajoie, calling for a review of the programme's operations and the value of continued subsidization. "Sil Dorsettian athletes are especially competitive in any form of race, whether its swimming, biking, cars, running, et cetera. Lahaye's programme is failing our men and women and not providing the physical training and motivational support they need to be successful on the global scale."

Lahaye replied, calling Lajoie's assessment too early to be accurate, while also blaming a smaller talent pool on which to draw athletes in. "With such a small population compared to the other countries of the world, and most of the talent being drawn into other forms of racing, the results aren't surprising. We're doing the best we can. It's also very early, with only four events done and thirteen to go. We need to see the full picture."

The 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke are scheduled for Tuesday, July 7th.

Chola Swimming Team Disappointed

After a mediocre performance in the 1st day, the Chola team was disappointed at this day's results, the nation's Sports Minister, Mr Kokaram Karnavil said, "This day was obviously a disappointment, the team will work harder next time, we always go for the gold." The Coach of the Swimming Team, Mrs Noor Rana said, "The team will definitely work harder next time."

PATALIPUTRA – the Odinspyl Swimming competition was a glimmer of hope for Saintonge's small Odinspyl delegation, after swimmer Sara-Clémentine Brout won the bronze medal in the 100m backstroke event last 6 July. Ms Brout also competed in the 200m backstroke event yesterday, but only finished fifth.

Swimming became one of the few possibilities for Saintonge's Odinspyl delegation, after the country disappointingly (and shockingly) qualified for only 4 out of the 13 announced events so far. "Disappointing, but what can we do," Ms Brout said after yesterday's swimming event. "We did our best for the country, and I'm sure all of the other athletes in our delegation will do so too, these qualifications notwithstanding."

The breaststroke events will be held in the subsequent days, with Jérémie Varlet and Anne-Louise Defermon representing Saintonge.

Swimming in Polihy
Despite living on an island, our top swimmers failed to bring in a medal. We hope for the best as we continue, as Polihy swimming star Hulgar Gremble takes the spotlight for getting seventh and then sixth in both the 50m meter men's freestyle and the 100m Men's freestyle. He says in a recent interview. "My old mum told me I'd be good at all sorts of sports. Look at me now! Better than nothing... I guess. Maybe next time, eh? I'll be playing i some more football the next time we make it in..,"
He declined to comment for today's brief section of Swimming in Polihy We may or may not get back to you, see ya later, and remember, Swimming iscool, and so is Polihy! tm
Breaking News!!! Star Swimmer Hulgar Gremble out! After his mostly good performances, he almoat got dead last in the standings for the 200m freestyle! The coaching staff have replaced him, lets see where this goes! (Gremble refused to comment)
Update 3: In the men's swimming relay, we barely missed out on a medal at fourth! Back home is pretty dour about that...

Ottar Holberg grabbed hold of the edge of the pool, pulling himself close up to the wall before he quickly dropped his head below the water then came back up. He turned his head up to face Hanne Ruen who was standing above him in her swimwear ready to get in to the pool. "How was that?" he said up to her as he caught his breath. "You were point one better than last time, good job. The only improvement I can recommend is that you need to jump into the water a bit further forward to gain some minor distance earlier on." she replied with a bright smile on her face. She stood there as she waited for Ottar to haul himself up out of the pool before she went to dive in. She wanted to improve on her technique before she would need to get ready for the competition ahead if she wanted to feel confident that she could bring home a medal, ideally the Gold she would think to herself. To come home and proudly display a medal she had earned would fill her and her town with so much pride and she wanted to be the one to give it to them.

The Ulstome swimmers had been training together since arriving in Pataliputra, working together in giving constructive feedback and giving positive reinforcement to their fellow swimmers to try and push them to achieve further, to be faster and to do better. Now with the 200m breaststroke and 100m freestyle soon to happen the determination for the swimmers to be the first of their country to bring home medals during the 2020 Odinspyl was mounting and the swimmers loved it. To them it added to the atmosphere, it made them want to strive further and be the first of team Ulstome to claim medals.

PATALIPUTRA – the Odinspyl Swimming competition proved to be the unlikely place where Saintonge's small delegation will find gold. During yesterday's 200m freestyle event, Jacob-Malcolm Haudegand finished first in 1:45.45, bringing home Saintonge's first gold medal in the Odinspyl competition. Haudegand's win was greeted with loud cheers from the Santonian delegation. "I was like, I won? Really?" Haudegand related in an interview after the event. "At least my mum won't be disappointed now. She said she wanted Saintonge to win at least one gold medal."

In the women's 200m freestyle event, Caroline-Maëlle Fallières placed eighth.

Haudengand's win was a turnaround from the disappointment in the men's 100m and 50m freestyle events, where swimmer Antoine-Marie Mireaux finished 39th and 33nd, respectively.

In yesterday's 100m breaststroke event, Jérémie Varlet barely missed out on a medal, placing fourth; Anne-Louise Defermon finished seventh in her race.

Swimming for medals​

PATALIPUTRA – the Santonian team fished out more medals in the swimming competition: Jacob-Malcolm Haudegand won another gold medal, this time in the 800m freestyle event. Haudegand finished the course in 7:40.56. His teammate Antoine-Marie Mireaux recovered his mojo and finished 9th in the 400m freestyle event, after a disappointing 39th in the 100m freestyle event.

In the women's 400m freestyle event, Caroline-Maëlle Fallières redeemed herself and won silver, after finishing eighth in the previous 200m freestyle event.

This meant that all of the current medals won by Santonian athletes came from the Swimming competition. The Fédération saintongeaise de natation (FSN, Santonian Swimming Federation) lauded its athletes in its Twitcher feed.

Back to Accommodation​

“Nice win Megan!” said her manager Grace Nyland after her win in the first round of the women’s lightweight Cedestre. “It was tougher than expected” Megan Kilroy responded cheerily “there were times im was concerned I was going to lose and lose badly if it carried on.” She gave a wide smile and a slight almost nervous laugh as she reached her manager “but I’m through to the next round now, were one step closer, I’m so happy.” She wrapped her arms round her manager as they embraced each other before they started to head away.

As they made their way towards the entrance to leave the venue they encountered the other Cedestre athletes who had come to represent Ulstome all gathered together. Upon noticing the arrival of Grace and Megan in their direction the group got each other’s attention and raised up their hands in greeting and to draw their attention to them if they already hadn’t noticed. As the 2 groups met they could all see the smiles on each other’s faces “Congratulations!” said Bradley Gorman, the male heavyweight of Ulstome and a giant of a man, as he outstretched his hand which Megan eagerly shook. Beside him was Nathan Nangle, the mens middleweight, and Nessa Lyne, the womans featherweight. “To you as well” she replied “to all of you” she continued after a brief pause whilst she looked at them all. When she had met them all before the Odinspyl she did not know what to expect to face in the international competition and had been more than happy find they were all friendly towards her without her feeling the need that she needed to prove herself to them.

“Well we should all start heading back” Grace interrupted “We should leave before it gets too busy and we’re stuck in this place.” Bradley laughed and slapped her on the shoulder “Yes lets! I’m starving” as he turned to leave at the head of the group.

The journey back to their accommodation was almost straight forward but a slight detour caused by a distraction of an interest in the local culture of the area before the managers had got control of their athletes at got them back to the accommodation, the detour had been on for over an hour by that point.
When they eventually got back to the accommodation they found the swimmers all sitting around cheerfully chatting amongst each other, those with medals wore them clearly around their necks. Bradley leaving the group was the first to spot them and immediately broke off to go see the medals, soon they were all hurrying behind him to see. “Congradulations!” Bradley’s voice boomed. Hanne Ruen held up her silver medal for Bradley to see better “after my very poor 100m I couldn’t have been happier to have won this” she kissed the medal before turning to Natalia Morrow next to her “You’ll need to get one in your 1500m” “Don’t worry I’ll be getting gold, just you wait, you've seen me practising and your feedback was very useful”. Ottar Holberg “Why not get a 2nd one like I will in the butterfly” he shouted jokingly. Bradley stood straight up and pointed his thumb to his chest and waved to the other Cedestre athletes “we will all be getting gold just you wait!”

Later as the athletes turned in from their socializing Megan saw their faces turn to ones of sheer determination, starkly contrasting from their smiley attitude a few seconds earlier.

Another Round Forward​
Across the Cedestre events of the Odinspyl the Ulstome athletes advanced yet again onto the next round of the competition.

The round of 16 was off to a good start for the Ulstome athletes with a victory in the Men’s Middleweight by Nathan Nagle over their Yamantau opponent. This was followed by several other successes by his fellow Cedestre team mates throughout the day. Bradley Gorman went highly aggressive against his opponent from Lawston in the Men’s Heavyweight, barely sending any blows before he quickly attempted for the throw to take his opponent down to the ground. After a while of struggle between the two athletes eventually Bradley came out on top. With the good mood caused by the victory in the men’s behind them the women soon kicked off a win the Women’s Featherweight with Nessa Lyne knocking her Malor-Kanada opponent out of the competition. After an uncertain start to her matchup against the Stan Yera, Megan Kilroy managed to bring it back to gain a victory in the round of 16 for the Women’s Lightweight.

Another round another set of victories for the Ulstome athletes in their nation’s ancient sport, international success that they can be proud to have achieved.

Saintonge hauls medals from the pool​

PATALIPUTRA – the Santonian team again hauled out more medals in the swimming competition. Jacob-Malcolm Haudegand settled for silver in the 1500m freestyle event, finishing second after Demescia, with a time of 15:15.01. In the women’s 1500m freestyle event, Anne-Micheline Malartic narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth.

Marc-Clovis Oudaille also narrowly missed out on a medal, making it to fourth place in the 200m breaststroke event. Oudaille’s compatriot in the counterpart women’s even, on the other hand, won a medal: Iseult Brachard finished third.

The cherry on top of the day was when Caroline-Maëlle Fallières won herself a gold medal in the 200m individual medley in the women’s race.

Yesterday’s event meant that Saintonge had won seven medals, all from Swimming.

First To Fall​
After yet another successful round overall for the Ulstome athletes in the Cedestre competition as three of the four Ulstome athletes made it through the quarter-finals of the competition. There was superb success in the Women’s events with Nessa Lyne having a strong win in the Women’s Featherweight over her Yalkan opponent. There was a similarly strong showing in the Women’s Lightweight by Megan Kilroy over her Keltivr opponent. There was success in the Men’s events as well with Nathan Nagle overcoming his Essalanean opponent much like he had previously to move on through the Men’s Middleweight. However it was not complete success with the first of the athletes to be knocked out of the competition being Bradley Gorman who after a good showing was defeated by the Malor-Kanada athlete. Three had made it through but the first had fallen.

In the Semi-finals there was yet again a strong showing from the Ulstome women with Nessa Lyne defeating the Ponterre opponent and Megan Kilroy defeating her opponent from Sil Dorsett. However again yet another one was defeated with Nathan losing to his opponent from Sil Dorsett. This has put Ulstome out of all the Men’s Cedreste competitions, to bring home the Gold that many where hoping for from the sport now rests on the two female athletes as they prepare for their last matchup of the competition. They will come up against against Goyanes and Essalanea respectively whilst Nathan still has a shot to come how with Bronze, still a major achievement, if he can beat his Keltivr opponent and come third.

It now rests upon their shoulders to better their nation in the Olympics and come home themselves showered with success.

The round of 32 for the Fenixian events was off to a god start for Ulstome. In the Men’s events both athletes were able to win their matchups to progress through to the round of 16. The Ulstome Men’s Featherweight Ronald Myre was able to outdo his Bashime opponent to come out with more points and be able to progress on. Much like Ronald, the Ulstome Men’s Heavyweight Fredrik Roberg was able to gain the advantage over his opponent from Yamantau to come out on top. Similarly in the Women’s events Greta Setter the Ulstome Women’s Flyweight athlete was able to beat her Yalkan opponent and move on to the round of 16. It was not complete success however as Turid Malland the Ulstome Featherweight athlete was unable to overcome her Gotmark opponent and was sent out of the competition. She was the first to fall and all hopes are that the remaining athletes will be able to obtain similar success to their fellow athletes in the Cedreste events.

Ottar Holberg dived forward into the pool, the water was cold but it felt refreshing as his body pushed deeper into the water. As he got low down in the pool following his dive he began to swim forwards underwater as hard as he could, to gain as much distance before he broke the surface. He was still frustrated after narrowly missing out on obtaining a bronze medal in the freestyle before having finished in 4th place. He soon broke through the surface of the water and began to swim as fast as he could to the other side of the pool where Herman Sanden, having already won a Gold medal in the Butterfly, was waiting for him. As soon as Ottar reached the other end Herman dived over him and begun to swim his 100m of the pool. Immediately he pulled himself up and out the pool so that he would be out the way when Ørjan Ekern would complete his 100m.

“You don’t need to get yourself so worked up” Magnus Vella said to him “I know your still thinking about what you could of done to have got that medal but just relax. We’re training at the moment and it will do you no good worrying over a race that’s already over.” Ottar was annoyed that his mood and thoughts had been so clear but Magnus was right, he needed to move on and focus on his next task, he wouldn’t get anywhere being caught up in the past. “Thanks, it’s just I can’t get it out of my head.”

Magnus placed a reassuring hand on Ottar’s shoulder as he walked by saying “I know. Just don’t let it get to you” he adjusted his goggles as he prepared to dive in. “Don’t worry Ottar we will leave hear with Gold just you wait!” and with that he had dived forward. He would be the last of the Men’s team to jump in when it came to actual relay and Ottar had full confidence that he… no that they could succeed.

He looked over to the Women’s team that was training only a few lanes over and as he could hear their energetic encouragement of each other. They were all in high spirits, the women’s had been doing much better than the men’s, all on the relay team having already achieved Silver medals to bring home had only motivated them further to aim for the Gold. Their positivity had positively impacted all the athletes who hadn’t yet to achieve any medals to push on and try to get some to bring home for themselves so that they could not only celebrate others success but also their own.

The sound of contact with the boxing bag echoed around the empty room. Kick after kick after kick could be heard as the blows made contact in a rhythmic fashion. The sound of each blow could audible be followed with a sharp inhale or exhale of breath as they moved between blows. A moderately tall woman was leaning against the wall with her arms folded, a blue towel around her neck, as she looked sharply at the figure before her. Her eyes focusing on every detail of her movements, how she stood, how she moved, how she made contact and how she withdrew to move into her next movement following the contact. Everything was being expertly and unwaveringly watched.

Greta Setter felt the sweat move down past her forehead and run down her cheek, she was breathing heavily as she stood before the bag in her stance. She had been preparing for the semi-finals and could not allow herself to become overconfident and complacent. She swung her left leg round, aiming it high as if going for her opponent’s head, as her leg made contact with the bag she let out a long exhale before bringing it back to reform her starting position. She stood there for a few seconds taking sharp breaths, her hands clenching and unclenching. Suddenly she swung her right leg, aiming lower that she had with her left and landed it in where on a person the torso area would be. She looked to her side at the woman on the wall who only gave her a slight nod. Greta broke her stance and let out a long sigh before turning and starting to walk over.

“How was that?” Greta questioned. “Good enough” was sharply responded. Greta sighed with relief knowing that to be as good a response as any from her coach “Alright Sofia, good to know we are done?” the last part being said as a mixture of both question and statement. “I am your coach, I will tell you when you are done and yes we are done for now.” Sofia corrected. Sofia opened the door and looked back coldly at Greta “Greta, you have done well here but do not let your success distract you, do not let it make you think you will always be the better of whoever you face for that will not always be the case. You must stay focused on the path ahead and do whatever you must to climb to the top. Do you understand?” Greta just nodded, not having been expecting her coach to start saying this to her now. “Good” Sofia continued “Now time to review your matchups against your Yalkan, Bashime and Gotmark opponents as well as those whom you will be up against. You may have won but you need to keep doing better.”

“Can I at least change out of these clothes first?” Greta asked. “What? Can’t stand you own sweat? Greta my dear you won’t get a man like that.” Sofia shook her head. So the two continued down the hall ready to finish reviewing the previous matches of theirs and their opponents.

The final of the swimming events was almost here, the 100m medley would test the Ulstome swimmers. The men’s and women’s teams were training only a few lanes next from each other, determined to push themselves and measure how well they were doing against each other as well as give each other feedback on their short comings in order to help each other improve their performance. The atmosphere was a mixture of friendly and seriousness with everyone there cracking jokes and comments at one another every now and then but it was all underwritten by the seriousness in everyone’s minds. They all wanted to win and so their minds were focused on the competition ahead. When Blaine Boyle went to drop himself into the water so that the men’s team could start the medley practice again he fell forward, landing with a face full of water that left him shaking his head and rubbing his eyes to get the pools water away. His team just laughed at him. “Shut up” Boyle shouted at them and pulled himself up to kick off and start the butterfly that made up the first part of the Medley. He dived in and out of the water, swimming closer and closer to where Justin Cleod was waiting to dive in over him. When he reached the end he saw Justin’s shadow fly over him as he dived far forward and went deep under the water. Boyle looked proudly at how far he jumped. “Yeah, im feeling good about this” he confidently though to himself.

Sundeonian Flyweight soars from Dark Horse to Fenixian Semifinals

Hedda Pedersen, the Flyweight fighter from the little village of Hadernsver, is moving on to the Fenixian Semifinals after an intense match with the fighter from Kasu. As every Malor-Kanadian contender in the other classifications is knocked out, Pedersen has remained, and after her successful match against Goyanes, she’s become the center of discussion about Malor-Kanada’s Odinspyl chances.

Skarp Nyhrekte’s Markus Gundersen managed to secure an interview with her after her Quarterfinals fight.

MG: Thank you for putting aside the time to talk to me, I know you’ve a lot to do.

HP: It’s not a problem.

MG: First of all, congratulations on your fight, it was quite something to watch.

HP: Thank you.

MG: I understand you’re from Hadernsver. Now, rural Sundeonian villages aren’t exactly known for their prestigious Fenixian training facilities. Would you mind telling us how you first became interested in Fenixian, and a little bit about your training?

HP: Well, there aren’t any Fenixian Schools in Hadernsver, we have a population of about three-thousand, but there are several in Fort Seanin. When I was seven or so, I went with a friend who was already enrolled in the Frommen Academy, which is only a half-hour drive away from Hadernsver, and I was immediately enthralled by the sport. I managed to convince my parents to sign me up, and I started going a few times a week. Once I was old enough to take the bus, I began going almost daily.

MG: Interesting. When did you start competing in tournaments?

HP: I attended my first real tournament when I was twelve. I got first place in the Kanadian Southern Regional in 2012, and second place after I moved on to the Kanadian Nationals in 2014. After I won the Nationals in 2018, I was offered the honor to represent Kanada- Malor-Kanada, rather, in Odinspyl, and obviously I took it up. I mean, after all that devotion to the sport, who wouldn’t?

MG: How have you been enjoying Pataliputra so far, besides the competing?

HP: It’s been wonderful. I haven’t traveled much outside of Kanada, so it’s been a very interesting experience. It’s a beautiful city, and the accommodations have been great.

MG: That’s good to hear. Do you have anything to say about the semifinals tomorrow?

HP: I would be lying if I didn’t say I was a little nervous. I never thought I would get this far, now I’m going up against some of the best in the world, but I think I’ll be able to pull through.

MG: Great. Thank you for having me, Miss Pedersen, and good luck tomorrow.

HP: Thank you.

Hedda shoveled another spoonful of soup and ramen into her mouth, leaning against the wall as a knock came to her door. Nearly choking as she rushed to swallow, she sat up and called out, “You can come in!”

Her coach walked in, a young man wearing a striped tracksuit and carrying a box of letters, “Evening, Hedda.”

“How’s it going?”

“Alright. I saw a link to your interview on Fluttr.”

“You read it?”

“I was standing next to you when you gave it.”

“Fair enough. What’s that?” She asked, referring to the box.

“Letters from a bunch of the kids in the academy back home. They were streaming your fight during a bunch of classes. Fan mail.” he set the box down on her bed.

“This is crazy.”

“Yeah. Were you being honest when you were talking about tomorrow’s fight?”

“Somewhat. I’m a little more than just nervous, I’m really fucking nervous.” She put her ramen down on the nightstand and stood up, beginning to sift through the box.

“I can’t blame you. This is where it gets serious.”

Hedda laughed, “And getting into Odinspyl wasn’t?”

Her coach shrugged, “There’s only so many Kanadians that do Fenixian.”

“What about Malorians?”

“You think they’d have a chance?”

“Har har har,” Hedda looked up, shaking her head, “I just hope I can bring home something.”

“Hey, if you need encouragement,” he nodded, “Just look through the box. They may be a sea away, but they’re cheering for you. We're warming up 0430, get some rest.”
