HPL 2019/20
Midway through the season, there have been a few surprises in the HPL table. There remain two matchdays before the three-week-long winter break, and the title race is already starting to heat up. The Phoenix Coast Warriors currently find themselves atop the league table, although they are level on points and neck-and-neck with Highton City FC. Those two clubs are not even the only ones gunning for the league title; Trier FC are just behind, as are Victoria United and Capital FC. There are eight other clubs within ten points of the league leaders, which means that which four teams guarantee qualification for the CEFA Champions Cup next season are yet to be seen. Capital FC's historic unbeaten streak, dating back to February of 2019, came to an end at 34 matches when they fell to city rivals Highton City. On the contrary, the HPL is also seeing a historic losing streak; 3City FC haven't won a single league game since defeating Phoenix Coast Warriors in week 32 last season. The Rovers finished last season on 38 points, but midway through 2019/20 they are yet to even earn a single point as relegation seems imminent. For 17th placed FC Jefferson, survival too seems unlikely, but defeating 3City in week 18 will be crucial if they want to hope to stay up. The relegation battle also seems some unlikely names involved; AS Nola, who will compete in the Erda Liga this spring after finishing 3rd in their Champions Cup group, find themselves in 14th place, whilst Club Alexandria and FC Czyville are also lower than they would have hoped. Aþletic Lighton may be flying high in the Champions Cup as they look to reach the Quarterfinals, but they are suffering badly in the league, with only four wins and finding themselves in 16th place. Amongst midtable teams, Lincoln Park and Georgetown seem the most vulnerable, but both are more than ten points from relegation and are looking to coast to a comfortable mid-table finish. North Highton FC and Aleman FC both find themselves in positions that should a string of results go their way, they might be able to compete for a Champions Cup or Erda Liga spot. Newly-promoted Aachen SV (led by Attu Hureg) and Glöckenkirchen Union (led by Emil Galeta) are both much higher in the table than anticipated, and are gunning for a possible spot in CEFA play next year. As for Neu Club Trier, the emergence of Mario Rydz this season has helped propel them to sixth in the league, just seven points off top and well in contention for top four. Rydz has broken into the Hightonian national team, who will tour Iteria as they play their 2020 January Training Camp in Iraelia, with matches against Hessunland, Iraelia, and Skanda.
In the second division, Natbrücke Fortuna leads the way, with a close race between themselves, Calabria United, Essen FC Eintracht, and VfB Hochmoor for the automatic promotion spots. On January 1st, the HFA will vote on whether or not to add two additional teams to the Premier League, a question that has circulated amongst Hightonian football for years. Should this vote be successful, two more teams will have the opportunity to be promoted.
