Okay, so what if we had an international network of mafias that did organized crime throughout Eras? We could have a Five Families group and a Commission of the mafias. We could also RP the mafias causing trouble for/in our nations.

Thoughts? :npa4:

That would be difficult in Sadakoyama, as all the things the mafia is usually involved in - gambling, alcohol, drugs, prostitution, pornography, media piracy - aren't illegal. Even murder for the most part is a civil matter.

When you get down to it, our karass based social structure has elements in common with mafia families.

Although, it wouldn't be unusual for us to be suppliers for these criminal groups, especially the drugs.

Same for plembyland.

Organized crime likewise really doesn't have much of a presence in Vazos simply on the basis that the government has too much surveillance for them to avoid being caught. There are some groups that manage to survive, but this is only due to negligence or corruption on the part of local authorities.

All of the previously mentioned activities are illegal, but organized crime doesn't tend to be the source.

Challenge Accepted!

:P

Floresque is basically a police state and Myroria's internal drug trade is controlled pretty heavily by virulently racist and anti-foreigner gangs that are at times hard to distinguish from legitimate political entities. If you want to RP some brutal, brutal gang war I might be up for it.

The Mafia is involved in way more things that that, though. Ignoring murder as a 'civil' offence for a second :P

Not a bad idea Syrixia, but I think it'd be a bit hard to RP the mafia interacting over such vast distances. Interacting within one nation might work though.

Certain large gangs, such as the Yakuza or the New York/New Jersey Mob/Mafia have hands in literally everything. My mom has probable connections to the New Jersey Mob, and she's been in multiple restaurants run by the Mob.

I'm not sure how the Mafia would fit in Yeraennus, though doing something entertaining as having the entire K'ter family be part of the Mafia could be fun, so I end up with a state run by an organized crime family.

Well, sure; the basic social unit of Sadakoyama is the extended family, not the individual. They own all the real estate, businesses, provide their own security, handle their own financing; all the functions of a crime family without the criminalization.

I admit most of what I know is from The Godfather and Goodfellas. What else?
Fraud, extortion, protection rackets, smuggling of literally anything, human trafficking, blackmail, influence peddling, bid-rigging, money laundering, bribery, black market trading... If it's illegal, profitable enough, and passes the risk vs. reward test, they'll do it.

Edit: Really, if there is anything at all that is prohibited by law, someone is going to step up and try to make money off of it.

They also have a growing presence in industrial relations matters - the runnings of unions. Some of them are involved in corporate crimes, as well as the running of not-for-profit organisations that are essentially scams.

Narnia's got the CEC Mafia which is what happens when a mafia goes legit. They started out with the unlawful sale of Chuck E. Cheese's showtapes but since then expanded into many different areas.

Kalti already has four families that act in this manner but also have a few key differences. One, they are known publicly and are beloved by the majority of the population. Two, they don't drive out competition... they welcome it and help small businesses thrive. Three, there is generally no infighting among the families but occasional flare ups do happen. Four, all practices that the families are involved in are legal and regulated by the government and are thus known to the intelligence community. Five, all four families make up the Ordú an Ghrá and were established with the abolishment of the monarchies... one of the families are the direct descendants of the last two monarchs.

Note: Prostitution, media piracy and other illicit activities are heavily watched by the government and intelligence community and are nigh impossible to get away with.

The four families...
- O'Siodhachain (gambling) ... descendants of the last two monarchs of Kalti
- O'Gallchobhair (pornography) ... descendants of the federations first president's family
- O'Floinn (alcohol) ... descendants of the northern general's family
- O'Caoimh (drugs) ... descendants of the southern general's family

Malachit effectively wiped out the Mafia with the legalization of marijuana and other drugs, pornography distribution, etc. and the significant beefing up of domestic anti-crime agencies.

So we have (iirc) the four Kaltian families, the Myrorian Mafia, and the Sheireni Mafia, which is basically the Chinese/Vietnamese Yakuza. Perhaps we could expand on these and maybe do an RP about them as well?

My four families aren't really crime families per say. They run those industries as they are the largest in the nation and were responsible for the vast majority of the laws behind them becoming legal. However, were an outside crime family attempt to move into Kalti, they would act to protect their own local interests and those of the smaller businesses. They themselves see no reason to expand outside the nation for the time being.

Perhaps a part of one of the families could break off and become an organized crime unit? We could use this as a way to start a gang war RP.

The crime families of mcmasterdonia would basically be the royals of some of the provinces I expect, with close ties to the Government. Like Myroria, McM is regularly held hostage essentially by massive disputes between warring families. Which is why we have the problems we have today. Of course at a lower level, there are criminal organisations that act on behalf of someone much senior.

I think for this type of RP a setting is important. Perhaps one of Syrixia's cities where the various mob failies, with links to foreign mafiosi organisations could interact with one another?

To go into more detail - I imagine the organized crime situation in Myroria looks something like this:

Politically, Myroria is ruled by several noble families whose representatives meet in a non-elected legislature and advise and elect the Sedera to a life-long term. These families have actual political power and I imagine cadet branches or other relatives distant enough to provide plausible deniability handle the things organized crime gangs tend to handle.

They probably accept ethnically Myrorian people into their ranks as soldiers or associates and probably have violent underground feuds with their rivals regularly. They probably enjoy protection from relatives in the legislature and Her Majesty's Executive that allow them relative impunity so long as they don't get too unignorable in their methods.

In the rural areas and wilderness of Interior Myroria, they make a majority of their money off the methamphetamine, heroin/opiate, bootlegging, and illegal gambling trades. Near the coast and the major cities, their presence is probably tolerated less and their activities are less obvious. Many, if not most, are racist and xenophobic. They may be on the same side as families they have no quarrel with in opposing foreign gangs intruding on their territory. Families feuding with each other will likely not put their weapons down to unite against foreign enemies - this may be exploitable.

In light of this, nearly any karass in the country could and probably would engage in some of these activities at some point or another, especially at the expense of foreigners. Especially black market trading, with our tax rates.

Human trafficking... Hmmm... we always need test subjects...

Syrixia has no problem with organized crime. The government's extensive intelligence networks and civil programs in cooperation with the citizenry make organized crime rare and when it does exist it's small.

The mafia in Shei Ren, however, is much larger and very influential. Most crime in Syrixia is somehow orchestrated by the Shei Ren Mafia, which for reference is called the Phra Dong Triad, or PDT.

The main core of each family is intensely loyal to the state and would not fall into organized crime. Doing so would result in a major loss of their public reputation and harm them. Having said that, I can look at possibly having a disgruntled family member (someone minor) go rogue and attempt to overthrow the head of their particular family. Most likely this would take place in one of the two Kaltian Autonomous Regions where the intelligence community does not have as strong of a presence.

Pelhafor has some organized crime (mainly drug-smuggling) networks that extend into some coastal Kannexan cities. A campaign in the early 90s to wipe out organized crime in Kannex proper has been largely successful in nabbing the top figures.

Imperium doesn't really have organized crime that isn't run by the state. Pretty much all drugs, as well as prostitution, are legal in Imperium, as is gambling. The most serious crimes are things that are difficult to profit off of - underground religions, treason, and espionage, etc.

Imperium would be a prime target for intellectual property crime, but we effectively take the China mode of thinking - enough of our research is into modes of production, rather than actual technology, to make much of it prohibitively expensive to smuggle.

And we're not economically resilient enough to launder money.

We do however sell firearms - lots of very cheap firearms - and provide firearms training quite literally to anyone with a university degree, and some people undergoing high school. With very little oversight. The only real problem is getting out of the country with effectively anything that is worth money, including firearms, but that's really the only issue for arms smuggling. And it's fairly trivial to pay off the Limitorial Service - we even have Solstice parties twice a year where you can give cash gifts, cars, etc. as a sort of bribe bank account from which you can draw from for the next six months.

Nebulan criminals and smugglers, formerly based out of Galacta before the annexation, have set up shop in the Kalinins, bringing drugs out and guns in. The coast guard is well equipped to deal with these smugglers, but many of them are developing new ways to escape the law.

Syrixia and I have agreed that there should be a second Crime family in Eras, run by Yeraennus' very own K'ter family. This crime family is in constant background conflict with the Phra Dong Triad all across the world. I was wondering if anyone would like to have relations to the K'ter Family Mafia and help construct it, since I have no imagination.
