So, how'd you pick your national name?

An old question but not one that's been asked recently; what's the story behind your name, flag, national animal/currency?

Mine's fairly obvious, I should hope. If someone hadn't nicked it first I'd be called Floydia, so that my citizens were known as Floydians.

Ermarian is what fans call the world that Exile and Avernum are set in.

When I made my first set of nations, Ermarian was one of the names I used as I was freshly involved in the fanlore community.

In 2005, I happened to use this exact nation by chance when observing the happenings in TNP. Otherwise, you could now be knowing me as Parth or even Aeruillin.

This is a very neat coincidence, however, because when I began creating a distinct identity for the Ermarian name (IM contacts, email), I had the domain name already registered for the unrelated fanlore project. Hence, embassy.ermarian.net. So as far as you are concerned, I'm Ermarian and have always been Ermarian, when most of my online haunts know me by another name.

It's a corruption of my RL elvish name.

though apparently some people think the name was from the word "Maven".

I once had a D&D character (we're talking the '80s here) named Sir Irix of Blackshire. My first nation Irixinia derived its name from this character. When I decided to create a new nation to participate in off-site forum activities I tried to use Blackshire but it was taken. I went with the homonym without realizing the unfortunate abbreviation (BS) or the association with over-sized scissors. During the first couple of rouges I used up just about every variable of the name to counteract my repeated bootings. My reboot/vice-delegate nation Sirixis was also inspired by this character name.

Most of my nations are sci-fi related...

Haor Chall is a very obscure Star Wars reference (in short; Haor Chall being the company that designed some of the Trade Federation droids). Kuat Industries is also a Star Wars reference, as was the Guild Authority (based loosely on the Corporate Sector Authority).

Weyland and Yutani is drawn from Aliens. ApostleCorp (my Merit nation) was drawn from Deus Ex 2. AquinasNet is my TEP nation for RP'ing purposes that also draws heavily on the original Deus Ex (the Daedalus/Icarus/Helios AI's for the idea and the Aquinas Protocols that are mentioned in the game for the name).

I think that covers most of them...

Not a clue, although I'm fairly sure it has to do with the fact I used to be a super smash bros freak way back when like 4+ years ago now, and I always used Captain Falcon.

Govindia, Denivogar, Ramaba, and Nivogal are derivations of either my first or last name IRL.

Jack Bauer of CTU is from my fascination with 24.

Govrama is a combination of my First & Last names IRL. Same with Nidrama.

Yautjla is a variation of the name Yautja, the Predator species from the Aliens vs. Predator series.

Issedon was something suggested to me by Thyatira when he said I could be an honourary Gryphon of the Order of Issedon.

That should cover *most* of them :ADN:

The name was inspired by all the Central Asian countries with -stan in their names, the lack of geographic knowledge of many Americans and a conversation with a friend in the US Army Reserves about them sending him to Whereisthatistan. Terra Incognita is latin for Unknown Earth. The flag is taken from a photo in a coumputer war game called TacOps with the national motto written across it. I like Opssums/possums and the Kalashnikov is in honor of the rifles and the inventor.
