NS down?

Is someone else having problems in getting to any NS pages?

It says "server not found" at my PC. Or is it just my computer being funny again?

Am I alone in wondering how long Max BArry (or his publisher) will keep paying the bills on NS?

Let's face it, it's benefit as a marketing/promotional tool must be limited by now. Jennifer Government is several books ago for Max.

Sooner or later.....

Let's find the 10 richest NS members and raid their houses!!

YAARARA!!! TNP PIRATES!!

I prefer not to talk about this.
On the other hand, I think there are so many people who have come to like NS very much, that even if maintaining NS would not have many positive effects, shutting it down would have even stronger negative effects.
If he does that, I won't buy any more book from him. As simple as that.
And I think that goes for quite a lot of us.

*prays*
May HE just see this post, please dear god!

facing reality, Max is several books on from JG; he is no longer seriously promoting the book in other ways. the last post in the JG section of his blog site was Nov 2006,

Given that most of the talk around Nationstates these days is about its decline and limitations, It cannot be long before he pulls the plug.

My thoughts were:

A social networking type site, with each user a nation....can join regions, the UN, have foreign relations with each other...etc. Built in facilities for regional and organizational forums....

I'm able to reach the NS forums at Jolt, but not NS itself.

There's nothing from the NS mods at the Jolt forums as of yet about any problems.

You say that every time Nationstates goes down Flemmy.

Goodness...think about how flooded the forums would get for a few months by people trying to maintain that level of interaction with NS. I bet people would try to supplement the forums with their NS nations. Who knows how long it would last if the plug was pulled...

I dont know what id do! All these familiar Usernames! The good times! The Discussions! The OOC!!!! Where would i let off my intlectually witty steam! It would be a horrible day. That, or i'd just immerse myself (get it? Im a diver...Immerse! HA!) in my work.

There are some new NS-like games under development by NS players, so there maybe a viable alternative for all the NS communities to move to.

yeah. And one day it will be true.

The domain expires in September. Let's see what happens then.
Then we all move over to Cybernations, take it over and give them all what-for! ;)

Actually, Max Barry said in the past (a number of times) that he would just turn over the game to someone else to run to keep it alive.

Oddly enough, a few clever code-monkeys could create a similar game that could facilitate a simple shift-over. It wouldn't take much code or server space to do.

Other games like Cybernations are fairly simple affairs as far as programming goes. Where it gets sophisticated is the server security because there are always some goons out there who will try to hack the game. The one issue that occurs not only in NS, but over at CN, is that people use assorted scripts and bots to glean information about what is going on in the game - mostly statistical data. This can overload a server when thousands of people start querying the server to find out stat data. The solution for that problem over at CN was for the game itself to provide the means for openly providing all the statistical data anyone could possibly need or want.

I'm not worried about short-term outages. I didn't even know about this one; by the time I saw the Jolt post about it, it was back up.

I'm more bothered by the massive reduction of nations. I think NS had 71K nations the beginning of this month, which was the lowest since I started. Last time I looked, it wasn't too far above 70K!

Yeah, there's been a large die-off lately. I've been watching the number of nations in the region decline pretty much daily. Just a few weeks ago we had 3700-3800, now we're in the 3300-3400 range.

The slump doesn't typically start until the summer break for school aged players.

I believe that once the game drops under 50k certain parties will begin to seriously consider whether the advertising benefits, which I see as minimal at this point, outweigh the hosting costs and headaches associated with managing such a large community.

I do not believe the server contract will be renewed at any rate so start your "end game" planning now. :)

EVERYBODY PANIC!

Oh wait...Dear Moderator Fris has already stated that Max plans on continuing NS and, not only that, but NS2 is not as dead as we previously thought.

EVERYBODY PANIC ANYWAYS!

I believe what Fris said was that he couldn't promise NS2 in 2008 but that there was a plan...but it's not coded.

It's still vaporware.

Nah, I'm more optimistic. As soon as Jennifer Government is actually filmed and in post-production is when NS2 will come out or at least be coded. What better way to advertise a movie (Don’t answer that, I asked it rhetorically)?

If you believe that you are an idiot.

NS2 has been "in development" for over four years now. Keep wishing.

Simple math tells the story.

One year ago - 120,000 nations
Today - less than 70,000 nations

Each feeder lost about 400 nations over the past month.

I've already drawn my own conclusions.

I doubt that NS will disappear in the near-future. And it looks like the decline has stopped, at least for now. At least we haven't lost hundreds of nations/day for the last few days. :P But I'm still not holding my breath for NS2.

Well, if they ever do take down NS, I think the handful of us could seize control of Cybernations very easily. Oh, wait, that is already being done!
