Quintessentially North Pacifican
Opening Address, July 2026
"Quintessentially North Pacifican"? What are you talking about?
Over the past few days, in the lead-up to writing this Opening Address, I've done some reflection - reflection on what the Ministry of Communications, and by extension, TNP as a whole, means to me. As I alluded to in my very first opening address all the way back in April, I arrived on these glistening, rum-soaked shores back in 2022. However, I only returned as a full-fledged TNP'er in early 2025, when the first light of a new year was breaking over the horizon. Between 2022 and 2025, the Ministry had its fair share of ups and downs, of soaring peaks and sudden plummets; the lights were switched on and off, on and off, time and time again. When I finally returned in January 2025, the lights were switched off on the Ministry. Its fate was that of being subsumed into the Ministry of Culture's apparatus (how horrifying!!).
From what I've gathered, when the Ministry rang for help to clear out the old Comms Channel and relocate to Culture's HQ, the UPS movers never got the memo. As time went on, all that remained was an abandoned Comms Channel, frozen in time - a bittersweet time capsule filled with memories from a better time, when the Ministry was seemingly at its peak (and seemed destined to stay there...forever).
A year later, it was announced in the January State of the Region Address that the old Ministry channel would be taken out of its temporal standstill and brought back to life. No longer would it be fused at the hip with the Ministry of Culture. It was primed for a grand comeback to the world stage. The same TNL I had first known all the way back in 2022 was to be hoisted high into the night sky, where it would twinkle ever-so brightly and ever-so proudly in all its grandeur.
6 months down the road, and here we are. Still alive and not yet on the chopping block. I am currently nearing the three month mark in my tenure, and even though it's my first time being the Minister of anything in NationStates, I've learned quite a lot. The past few months have been, of course, testing grounds for what we, as a Ministry, are capable of producing/achieving. However, in recent times, as I'm sure you know, the groundswell of enthusiasm has turned into a full-on tidal wave that has now broken the dam-walls. More staffers have joined our ranks and bring with them a drive to help the Ministry in its mission. As such, I have been planning - and will continue to plan - this term to ensure that it is the very best it can be.

A Renaissance for The Ministry of Communications?
I've realized there is still quite a lot that needs to be done for the Ministry if we are to reach our true potential. I've derived a great deal of value from the discussions that I have with the staffers and have sewn together this patchwork of ideas that I hope can start as the foundations of something much more grander for this Ministry - a renaissance, I daresay.
The Northern Star (TNS)
The Northern Star, as the flagship publication of TNP, is the crown jewel of our Ministry - its pride and honour. Since TNS is a tri-monthly affair (its publication schedule is up to review, of course), the content in each edition must be, at the very least, worth the wait. In the upcoming TNS issue hitting newsstands this Friday, you'll notice it has undergone a makeover of sorts (both in aesthetical flair and the content). For starters, some of the new content we've added includes:
- A Crossword Puzzle: The crossword puzzle will feature themes chosen by our editors. The clues, of course, will not be strictly constricted nor confined to the theme, as NS-related clues will be intermingled throughout. The theme is moreso the overarching style and flavor of the crossword (if that makes sense) The first person to compelte the crossword will receieve two Legendary Cards from yours truly, with second and third place receiving one Legendary Card and three Epics respectively.
- Movie Review and Song Review: The latets issue of TNS (Issue XLII) introduced the Movie Review. This time, and for future issues, it will become a permanent fixture in our entertainment section, accompanied by its musical counterpart, the Song Review. In the future, we will strive to review songs and movies from the community; for this first edition, however, we've made our own selections. If you'd like to see a particular song reviewed in the future, my DMS are always open.
TNS Content Format going forward. The title cards will obviously won't look like this.
I also want to explore the possibility of venturing into investigative journalism with TNS. This would involve one of our staffers - working alongside a more senior member - diving deep into a certain topic and subsequently producing a high-quality article from it. For example, if there is a hotly contested election in another region, our two intrepid staffers would go behind the scenes and give readers a window into what is actually transpiring on the ground.
For obvious reasons, it won't reach the level of a Carl Bernstein or Bob Woodward investigation - though one can certainly dream - but the goal is to create content that is entirely original and cannot be easily imitated or replicated by another news agency. The idea is twofold: a) it will provide interesting content, and b) it will add a new dimension to our lineup of articles.
NBS Comeback
Yes, you heard that right. NBS is coming back - new & improved - for another spell. To take you on a trip down memory lane, NBS was the main radio broadcasting station for TNP. However, it was eventually discontinued, and its YT channel has been gathering dust ever since.
Contrary to what NS mods say about digging up the dead, the appetite for NBS' return has grown so strong that it's now back on the menu. I look forward to what we will be able to achieve with NBS, given that so many Ministry of Radio-era staffers have returned. In light of all this, I believe that NBS now has both the interest and manpower to give it the staying power that it deserves.
In order to give NBS the wind in its sails to properl it to uncharted waters (good ones, of course), we plan to create a recurring segment dedicated to detailing the activities of TNP's government. This segment will serve as your go-to source for all things TNP govt-relatd. Have no fear though: it will not be a matter of simply rattling off a list of numbers and statistics - quite the opposite, actually. In fact, the inaugural episode of NBS will feature the Delegate's State of the Region Address. So stay tuned for more...
RP Spotlight
I've foraged through the old COmms archives and found something quite interesting. In the age of yesteryear, we used to do RP spotlights in our TNN and TNS articles. I'd like to bring that back, especially given that a lot of RP heavyweights have joined the rank and file of the Ministry. The RP spotlight will not be a TNS-specific thing, but could potentially become its own standalone newsletter (who knows? I, for one, hope it does). It will shed light on the happenings in TNP's RP scene (vignettes, basically), and considering how bustling it is with life, it would be a grave - dire - injustice not to showcase the unsung heroes and their great works who keep this vital sector of TNP alive.
Ministry of Communications Card Exchange
For every contribution you make to the Ministry of Communications, you will earn points. What constitutes a contribution, you might ask? For the sake of simplicity, anything beneficial to the mission of the Ministry - contribtuing articles, peer-editing/ or revising other staffers' work, the list is endless. While not the most original name, Points are the currency of the ministry; as they accumulate, you will be eligible to receive trading cards from me as a token of appreciation (legendary cards once you have accumulated enough). This will be retroactive all the way to January as well, meaning that all contributions dating back to that time will be awarded points.

In Conclusion
I'll be completely honest with you. I don't think I've done nearly enough to shepherd this amazing Ministry toward the vision I've envisaged for it. If I want these bold aspirations to become a reality, I must find within myself the willpower to act or else they will remain nothing more than castles in the sky and forgotten what-could-have-beens.
I don't believe in throwing in the towel, especially not this early. Nor do I believe that selling the opium of premature pessimism makes good business. What gives me hope is this Ministry and the extraordinary plentiful (staffers) within it. For as the saying goes, "where there's a will, there's a way" - and my will comes in the form of the splendiferous souls who work hard behind the scenes to keep the dream alive: my beautiful staffers.
The Ministry has been reborn time and time again. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it rises once more. When I look at where we stand today and where we could be if we all row this boat in the same direction, I am certain that these dreams of ours - the ones I talk about - can truly be achieved.
I will continue to forge ahead and give it my absolute all, because this Ministry means so much to me and to many more TNP'ers far and wide. In every snese that matters, it is quintessentially North Pacifican.
Godspeed,
Isenoka
