Let’s be clear: I am not the likeliest candidate. My short time residing in the region prohibits the impressive CVs on offer from the other candidates, and I can’t point to other NS Gameplay experiences that make up for it. So why do I accept Comfed’s nomination anyway?

Primarily, because legal analysis is a fun challenge. It’s something I do intermittently in my day job as well; trying to read the tea leaves or analyse past judgements for their effects. I have had the benefit of hindsight in all of my academic work, divorced from the rulings themselves, but the work is something I have passing familiarity with and interest in.

Secondarily, I’m of the opinion that without regular challenge, any system will risk atrophy. With currently 3 candidates for 3 justices, the crucial role of the voters will be to either accept the three running or to reopen nominations. I want the justices chosen to be clear, positive selection based on their merits, and not because no alternatives were running.

Tertiary, I’m a self-righteous pseudo-intellectual with a penchant for dying on hills and with strong opinions on legal philosophy. How can I let this go once I have been nominated?

Do you hate big government?
"Big Government" in (especially RL US) political parlance is meant to be an anonymous, amorphous blob that invites hatred. "Big Government" includes, apparently, education, transportation, social safety, as well as defence, business subsidies, public health and safety, and the taxes to pay for it, while politicians arguing against "Big Government" readily support giving money to each of these areas as long as they see a benefit for them or their constituents. As "Big Government" is always an empty signifier for the thing that must be rejected, it also evades defining and contextualisation. As such I have to respond to your question in the negative.

What are your thoughts on the Regional Bar?

What are your thoughts on the Regional Bar?
I'm at a disadvantage here, because I can only see the rules, applications etc., and I am not intimate with the context leading up to the formation of the Bar. With that said, it looks to me like a worthwhile if currently underutilised institution; a functioning justice system requires some regularity in who can bring proceedings on behalf of the state (Here TNP), and what rules govern their conduct. That is the important role of the Bar, as it is in (RL) Common Law countries, and as such I see the clear merits. Without knowing exactly what problems the Bar was intended to solve, new developments it should enable, or enough cases brought -- either as prosecution against citizens or Bar Association members for misconduct -- it is difficult to give a more definite answer. For example, RL Bars also govern the conduct of defence counsel, but the Regional Bar deliberately doesn't require defence counsel to be Bar members, for what I surmise are practical as well as legal (Re. Bill of Rights) reasons.
You know the details better than I, but from where I stand, the two full months of September and October that the Bar has been in existence limits whatever opinions I could form.
That's not a bad thing by itself, but it means my answer is going to be boring: I would like to see the Bar continue and develop before I weigh in on it. If the Bar grows it enough it could make sense to require Bar membership for defence counsel, for instance, even as that would require both institutional growth in the Bar and legal changes. Such ideas obviously have to develop in tandem with the institution and the voters.

Is there a reason why you haven't joined the Bar?

From reading the application rules I don't think I have a CV that would pass muster.
There's no hard requirement you have to satisfy to be a member of the Regional Bar, only that the Bar Commissioners should be satisfied with your knowledge of the law.

Among all the past Court Cases & Reviews, which do you think is the most important one in TNP's history, and why?

What if you had a look at threads such as this original bill thread and Pallaith's May campaign and from there do you have more insights?
