London North Eastern Railway announces 225 Day

train.jpg

LNER InterCity 225

London North Eastern Railway has announced plans to hold a 225 Day later this month.

The Intercity 225 trains were introduced nearly 40 years ago to complement the Intercity 125 HSTs on the East Coast Main Line.

22nd May 2025 will be dubbed ‘225 Day’, with LNER honouring the special trains as well as naming a Class 91 locomotive.

The Class 91 makes up part of the 225 set, providing the push or pull, with a Driving Van Trailer, or DVT, on the other end of the train.

On the 22nd, LNER say that they will name one of the Class 91s, the specific one is yet to be confirmed.

Dr Linda Wain, Engineering Director at LNER, said: “Our InterCity 225 trains have been running up and down the East Coast Main Line for almost 40 years now and it feels right that we celebrate all that they have done across those years.

“Consciously or not, millions of people have interacted with these giants of British engineering, and in their swansong years we want to recognise the mammoth impact they have had on the rail industry over the past four decades.

“225 Day is a perfect opportunity for colleagues and customers to come together, share memories, and celebrate the hard work these trains have put in.”

Steve Timothy, Stakeholder Director at Eversholt Rail said: “Our iconic fleet of InterCity 225 trains have provided millions of passengers on East Coast routes a fast and comfortable service over many years. We are proud to support LNER’s celebration of this popular fleet.”

Digital signalling set to be installed on Class 185 trains

train.jpg

Class 185 train

TransPennine Express (TPE) is upgrading its fleet of Class 185 trains with the European Train Control System (ETCS).

The system is a digital signalling technology that aims to improve reliability and safety.

Equipment will need to be installed and is being planned in advance.

Once completed, the use of ETCS will be confirmed.

train.jpg

TPE Class 185

Current outdated signalling systems cause congestion and have capacity constraints.

Introducing ETCS will help to improve these issues, with trains running closer together, without impacting safety, meaning that more trains can run at one time.

The system will replace the current system, providing live updates on braking distances and speeds directly to the train driver.

ETCS will replace traditional railway signals with real-time updates on train speeds and braking distances, delivered directly to the driver’s cab.

The resilient system should reduce maintenance issues and engineering work in the long run.

This system upgrade is part of TransPennine’s Route Upgrade (TRU), which is a multi-billion-pound, large-scale project to improve rail connections.

Class 185s in Siemens Mobility’s Ardwick Depot in Manchester

The funding will also support the ETCS installation, which will be carried out in collaboration with Eversholt, who own the Class 185s.

The work will be carried out at Siemens Mobility’s Ardwick depot.

“The introduction of ETCS on our Class 185 fleet will represent a major step forward for rail travel.

“This technology will not only enhance safety and reliability but also support the broader Transpennine Route Upgrade.

“We’re proud to work alongside Eversholt Rail and Siemens Mobility to deliver a more modern, high-performing railway for our customers.”

Chris Nutton, TRU & Major Projects Director at TransPennine Express

North Norfolk Railway to join in with VE Day celebrations

train.jpg

90775 “The Royal Norfolk Regiment” steams at Holt Station

The North Norfolk Railway is joining the 80th anniversary celebrations of VE Day on the 8th May.

War Department steam locomotive 90775 “The Royal Norfolk Regiment” will be hauling trains throughout the day.

Before its closure in 1964, the original Midland and Great Northern line operated trains throughout East Anglia and was set to be taken over by LNER before the war, which extended its independence.

During the war, the line became vital for transporting supplies and people, while East Anglia became significant in strategic efforts.

Weybourne saw an increase in traffic with an M&GN report saying a diminutive J15 locomotive hauled a 14-coach train full of troops bound for Muckleburgh.

train.jpg

Evacuees aboard coaches bound for East Anglia

“The Second World War undoubtedly had a profound effect on every area of life, and its impact on the railways was immense with goods traffic increasing as part of the war effort, evacuees transported from the towns to safer rural areas and hundreds of troop trains needed to help get the nation’s forces in the right place.

“It is fitting that 90775 is scheduled to be in action on the 80th Anniversary as the locomotive was designed to be robust but cost-effective to build and when new in 1943 was sent to Egypt to bolster the railways there. After the war, the engine was shipped to Greece and worked well into the 1970s before being repatriated and preserved”

Marcus & Cleo Have Another Bus Adventure into Cardiff!

Today Cleo was back with me this trip, as she has been recovering very well from her knee op that she had almost three weeks ago.

We went to 'The Great Western' for a couple of drinks, she's still sticking to tea.

I popped into my model railway shop and I found a few second-hand items to buy.

Then we went to 'The Works' and Cleo bought some more wool.

Then it was Cardiff indoor market, Cleo wanted a couple of things for her birthday next week.

So Neo and I are going halves on a silver locket and bracelet.

We then went back to 'The Great Western' and had some food and a few drinks.

Cleo was back on the G&T's.

Neo met up with us after work.

Then it was the bus home.

Engineering works on Cardiff Bay line

train.jpg

Cardiff Bay Line

Transport for Wales (TfW) is continuing to deliver the transformation of the Cardiff Bay line, with the development of a new two-platform station in northern Butetown and the redevelopment of Cardiff Bay station.

As part of the South Wales Metro, the Bay line will also be electrified to enable enhanced service frequency and to introduce brand-new electric trains.

The Cardiff Bay line will close from Saturday 10 May to Sunday 25 May so teams can carry out engineering work for the delivery of the transformation.

During this time, no services will run between Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Bay.

The half hourly service between Pontypridd and Cardiff Bay will also not run during this time.

Dan Tipper, Chief Infrastructure Officer at TfW, said: “The Bay Line transformation will see the biggest upgrade to public transport in the Butetown and Cardiff Bay area for a generation and is an important part of the South Wales Metro.

“This round of engineering works will be an important step in the project’s delivery, seeing us make headway on the development of a brand-new station in Butetown and the redevelopment of Cardiff Bay station.

“Teams will also be busy installing the new wires for the overhead line equipment during the line closure so that we can run the brand-new tram-trains.

“I’d like to thank our customers and neighbours living near the railway for their patience as we carry out these works. Please check before you travel during this time.”

While teams carry out the engineering work, new track will be installed on the Cardiff Bay line running into the new platform 2 at Cardiff Bay station.

This will replace the existing platform 1 that is currently used for services travelling from Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay, until the Bay line transformation project is complete.

Teams will also carry out sheet piling work at the new Butetown station during the line closure.

From 26 May onwards, customers will no longer be able to access Cardiff Bay station from Bute Street onto Cardiff Bay platform 1.

Customers will be diverted onto the new platform 2 from the Lloyd George Avenue side of the station.

Teams will also be carrying out piling works and installing the new wires for the overhead line equipment to run the new electrically powered tram-trains which will be introduced on the line.

With electrified lines being installed on the Core Valley Lines in South Wales, including on the Bay line later this year, TfW would like to highlight to the public the dangers of trespassing on the railway.

Trespassing on the railway is reckless, illegal and dangerous, and those caught could face a £1,000 fine.

With electrification work ongoing over the coming months, TfW is urging the public to obey trespassing rules and to stay clear of any electrical lines.

During the line closure, customers can use their ticket on Cardiff Bus services at no extra cost.

A few early morning and late night replacement buses will run between Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Bay.

On Saturday 18 May, some replacement buses will run between Radyr and Cardiff Bay.

TfW is advising all customers to check before they travel.

The Bay line transformation project, part of the wider Core Valley Lines transformation for the Metro, has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.

During the line closure, the half hourly service between Pontypridd and Cardiff Bay will not run.

TfW advises customers to check before they travel.

Customers can find more information about the closure and upcoming works on the Bay Line and Core Valleys Lines online on the TfW website: Metro service changes | Transport for Wales.

More information on the Bay line transformation can be found here: tfw.wales/bayfaqs

Tanfield Railway to welcome Belgian steam tram this May

train.jpg

Cockerill Lucie

The Tanfield Railway is to welcome the Belgian steam tram, Lucie, for its Great North Festival of Railways.

Lucie, usually based at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, will be in operation on the 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th May 2025.

Lucie is a vertical boiler steam tram and was built in 1890, and will join Furness Railway No. 20 and Tanfield residents to operate an intensive timetable.

Tanfield Railway General Manager, David Watchman, said “Lucie’s story, and her link to the pioneering work of Tyneside engineers like Robert Stephenson and how North East railway engineering and technology spread across the globe, perfectly captures the spirit of our Tanfield 200 celebrations. We’re thrilled to welcome her to Tanfield for two weekends.”

Mid-Suffolk Light Railway appeals for funds to build carriage shed

train.jpg

Diesels at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, known as the Middy, is appealing for donations to build a carriage shed at Dovebrook.

The Middy needs to raise £100,000 to build the structure, which it will use to protect carriages from exposure to extreme weather.

The Middy, which will hold a 1940s-themed event later this month, is the only standard-gauge heritage railway in the county of Suffolk.

It aims to preserve some of the character of the Edwardian light railway which operated in rural Mid-Suffolk for nearly fifty years in the first half of the 20th century.

Over last month’s Easter weekend, it launched its 2025 season, running three trains in steam.

Unfortunately, no vehicles of the original railway survive. However, the Middy has obtained and restored carriages from the period and before, which it believes “maintain the look and feel of how the Middy would have operated.”

The Railway has three Victorian coaches, all of which are well over one hundred years old.

All three are made mainly of wood, which makes them vulnerable to weather damage.

The three carriages are:
  • Great Eastern Railway no.140, a first-class smoking coach built in 1863 at Stratford Works in and reckoned to be the oldest Great Eastern vehicle still being used regularly.
  • Carriage no.12, a brake/third coach built for the Great Eastern in 1875 for a price of £275. It is a sister of a coach that the original Middy bought from the Great Eastern in 1904.
  • Coach no.13, a Great Eastern carriage which dates back to 1876. It had five third-class compartments, but the Middy has converted it into a first-class saloon with three third-class compartments. This makes it very similar to the vehicle that the line’s superintendent had built for himself in the early twentieth century.
To protect the carriages, the Middy plans to install a second siding at Dovebrook station near Stowmarket, with a carriage shed across both lines.

The shed will house the Victorian carriages and some other Middy wagons.

These include the oldest known horse box, G.E. no.180, which dates back to 1869.

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway (MSLR) has been, operated entirely by volunteers since 1990, and is attracting an increasing number of visitors.

The MSLR was named Suffolk Museum of the Year in 2015.

It has also won two first-class awards from the Heritage Railway Association.

Roaring Success at Kent & East Sussex Railway’s Gala

train.jpg

Dwarves of Steam triple header

Over their April Gala weekend, the Kent & East Sussex Railways had a roaring success with their first ever Dwarves of Steam Gala.

Over the 26th and 27th April, the railway saw 800 passengers attend the gala, generating a double-figure revenue and receiving an overflowing amount of positive comments.

train.jpg

Judy

There were three resident locomotives and two guests at the gala, who wanted to celebrate smaller locomotives instead of the mainline giants.

The featured locomotives at the gala were:
  • Willy the Well Tank – Spent their working life at the National Shipyard in Chepstow
  • Bagnall No.2572 Judy – Who was based at the Port of Par in Cornwall
  • Peckett No.1631 Marcia – Based at the West of Scotland Shipbreaking Company in Troon
  • Southern Railway No.2678 Knowle – Based for a period at Newhaven Harbour
  • Hunslet No.469 Hastings – Had a varied career between the Manchester Ship Canal and Immingham Docks
Willy the Well Tank and Judy were both guest locomotives, with Judy announced first and with Willy the Well Tank announced after.

All of these locomotives have a strong industrial past, and visitors came to see the small but mighty engines at work.

Getting to witness their unique charm and personality of these smaller locomotives.

The event even gained extra visitors from local media attention from the TV and radio.

train.jpg

Hunslet No.469 Hastings

The Gala was only possible due to sponsorship from Rapido Trains UK, which partly owned Marcia and pushed the railway to create the event.

Due to its amazing success, planning is already underway for a sequel gala in 2026 and possibly for years to come.

“Events like Dwarves of Steam remind us that the story of Britain’s railways isn’t just about high-speed glamour — it’s also about the unsung little engines that powered our ports, shipyards, and industries. It was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm from visitors, and a real tribute to the character and spirit of the K&ESR. We’re proud to give these hardworking survivors their moment in the spotlight — and we’re absolutely planning to build on this success with Dwarves of Steam 2 next year.”

Robin Coombes, General Manager of the K&ESR

Mainline return for steam locomotive 34010 Sidmouth?

train.jpg

Alan and Phil work on the boiler that will be used with 34010 Sidmouth

Southern Locomotives Ltd has released news of their intent to overhaul No. 34010 ‘Sidmouth’ to mainline condition.

The decision has been made so that Sidmouth can replace Eddystone when its ticket expires.

With this decision, the team at Sellindge has been preparing the locomotive’s frames for an official examination, which includes testing the thickness of vulnerable areas, performing ultrasonic tests on the welding, and confirming the integrity of the frames.

All the work that takes place will be documented so that the staff at Herston Works have a record of the work that takes place at Sellindge.

There is currently no space at Sellindge Works, whilst work takes place on 80104, so staff are continuing with work on 34010 at Sellindge.

The team at Tyseley has begun de-rusting and painting the boiler silver to smarten it up in preparation for TLW to begin its overhaul.

This boiler ran with 34053 but will now be used on Sidmouth, and the job list on the boiler will be known after a full inspection.

Weather conditions stops railway’s Sentinel steam locomotive running day

train.jpg

Sentinel No. 68153 on the Middleton Railway

The Middleton Railway in Leeds has cancelled the planned operation of Sentinel No. 68153.

Instead, this Sunday’s services will be hauled by Swanscombe No. 6.

The railway says that 68153 has a tendency to throw sparks out when in operation and says this will ‘almost certainly’ have caused lineside fires.

A railway spokesperson said “We very much regret any disappointment caused but the safety of our neighbouring landowners is very important to us. Watch out for other opportunities to ride behind the Sentinel later this season.”
