West Midlands Trains to continue to maintain CrossCountry Class 170 trains

train.jpg

John Doughty and Adrian Hugill shake hands on the deal

West Midlands Trains (WMT) has announced that it has come to a long-term maintenance contract to keep maintaining, servicing and cleaning CrossCountry's Class 170 fleet at WMT's Tyseley depot in Birmingham.

The contract started this month (April 2024) and secures jobs at the depot until 2031.

WMT says that it “reaffirms the partnership between the two train operating companies”.

CrossCountry Class 170 train

Long-distance operator CrossCountry announced last month that it is to increase the number of trains that it operates.

Tyseley depot, which first opened in 1908, is undergoing major upgrades, as well as gaining a new stores building and an improved fuelling and servicing facility.

The upgrades will include:
  • four new high level mobile gantries and hoists
  • a synchronous lift facility to lift a full length unit
  • a package of environmental improvements including shore supplies to reduce diesel engine running
  • extensions to two of the maintenance buildings
  • an Automatic Vehicle Inspection System (AVIS).
“Servicing, maintaining and cleaning the Class 170 fleet has been, and continues to be, an important part of Tyseley depot's workload and we are delighted to have signed this new contract with CrossCountry.
“The Class 170 fleet provides services connecting regions running from Cardiff and Gloucester in the west through Birmingham to Derby, Leicester and Nottingham in the East Midlands and onwards to Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport in the east.
“The fleet shares many synergies with West Midlands Trains' own class 172 fleet and the contract ties in perfectly with our commitment to investing in new infrastructure at depots.”
John Doughty, Engineering Director at West Midlands Trains

“It's fantastic to announce our renewed contract with West Midlands Trains who have looked after our regional Class 170 fleet so carefully for many years already. With Tyseley so close to the hub of the CrossCountry network in Birmingham, not only does this decision make perfect operational sense, but it's important for us to support the communities and economies in Tyseley and wider Birmingham with many more years of planned work for the West Midlands Trains depot.”

Dorset heritage railway to welcome nine diesel locos to annual gala and beer festival

train.jpg

Class 52 No. D1015 Western Champion

Dorset's Swanage Railway's annual Diesel Gala will feature nine classic diesel locomotives, helping to tell the story of the transition of Britain's railways from steam to diesel in the 1960s.

During the gala, Purbeck Kitchens will run the beer festival at Corfe Castle station.

The Diesel Gala and Beer Festival is now in its seventeenth year, and last year also featured nine locomotives. Railway enthusiasts from across the country travel to the gala at Swanage Railway.

During the gala, an intensive three-train service will operate, with most trains running the entire nine miles of the Swanage Railway. The route takes passengers past Norden station and beyond Furzebrook to the River Frome, which is within sight of Wareham.

Featured locos

Seven of the locomotives will travel to the heritage line from the national railway network, among them Class 52 ‘Western' No. D1015 ‘Western Champion' , visiting for the first time since 2007.

This is the first time that a Class 52 ‘Western' diesel-hydraulic locomotive has visited Swanage Railway since 2011. The full list of visitors, subject to availability, is
  • Class 69 No. 69 007 ‘Richard Trevithick' courtesy of GB Railfreight.
  • Class 24 No. D5054 ‘Phil Southern' courtesy of the East Lancashire Railway.
  • Class 52 No. D1015 ‘Western Champion' courtesy of the Diesel Traction Group.
  • Class 37 No. 37 254 courtesy of Colas Rail.
  • Class 20 No. 20 302 courtesy of the Harry Needle Railroad Company.
  • Class 20 No. 20 311 courtesy of the Harry Needle Railroad Company.
  • Class 50 No. 50 021 ‘Rodney'.

train.jpg

Class 24 D5054

Another first will be a Class 69 diesel locomotive – rebuilt in the last ten years from a 1970s Class 56 diesel locomotive – hauling trains on the heritage line.

The event will also feature a nostalgic 1966 ‘push-pull' 4TC four-carriage set, which London Transport is providing, and which operated between London and Swanage from 1967 until 1969.

It also ran on the main line between London and Weymouth from 1967 until 1988, when the Bournemouth-to-Weymouth line was electrified.

4TC London Transport push-pull carriage set passes Corfe Castle

Swanage Railway-based Class 33 No. 33 111 will also be appearing. It hauled the last 4TC ‘push-pull' carriage set to Corfe Castle in September 1971 on a Poole Grammar School railway society enthusiasts' charter train .

Also based at Swanage Railway and featuring at the gala Class 33 diesel-electric No. D6515 ‘Lt Jenny Lewis RN', which hauled the last train through Broadstone to Wimborne after British Rail closed the line to freight trains in May 1977.

Beer festival
The beer festival will include 34 local ales and seven ciders, and hot food will be available from midday until late during all three days of the event.

Admission to the beer festival, which takes place next to the Victorian goods shed at Corfe Castle station, will be free, and a token system will operate for buying drinks.

Jurassic journey to and from the gala

As last year, pre-booked ‘Jurassic Crompton' rail tours operated by the Branch Line Society and the main line train operating company GB Railfreight will carry passengers to the event.

The Friday ‘Jurassic Crompton' will run from Eastleigh to Swanage via Guildford and London Waterloo, and the Sunday ‘Jurassic Crompton' will return from Swanage to Eastleigh via London Waterloo. They will be hauled by ‘Lt Jenny Lewis RN' and a GB Railfreight Class 69 diesel locomotive, .

The Class 33 diesel-electric locomotives were known as ‘Cromptons' because their electrical equipment was manufactured by the Leeds-based Crompton Parkinson company.

Thursday preview

On Thursday 9 May, a special Diesel Gala and Beer Festival preview event will take place. It will feature diesel and steam trains running between Norden, Corfe Castle and Swanage, featuring Class 52 No. D1015 ‘Western Champion' and Class 33 No. 33 111 operating in ‘push-pull' mode for two round trips with the 1966 London Transport 4TC ‘push-pull' carriage set.

The event also features evening ‘Beerex' diesel trains on the Friday and Saturday. Class 50 No. 50 026 ‘Indomitable' will haul on the Friday evening only – its only appearance at the event – with Class 24 No. D5054 hauling the trains on the Saturday evening.

More information

Information about the Diesel Gala and Beer Festival, including timetables and fares, is available from the Swanage Railway's website. Tickets are available online at a reduced price.

“Class 52 No. D1015 ‘Western Champion' is the first ‘Western' locomotive to attend our Diesel Gala and Beer Festival since 2011 when Class 52 No. D1062 visited the Swanage Railway.
“No. D1015 ‘Western Champion' last visited Swanage in 2007 when it was one of the first diesel locomotives to visit the Swanage Railway via its new connection with the national railway network. No. D1015 ‘Western Champion' has recently returned to main line service following an extensive overhaul of its engines.
“Our annual diesel gala and beer festival is an important and popular event in the Swanage Railway calendar while there is an ever-growing national following for heritage diesel locomotives, particularly among younger rail enthusiasts.
“Over the past 17 years, our diesel gala and beer festival has grown in popularity to become one of the most highly regarded annual events of its type in the country.
“A lot of detailed organisation by a small team of enthusiastic Swanage Railway volunteers and staff goes into planning the diesel gala with planning beginning four or five months before the event.”
Event organising team member Dan Bennett, who lives in Wareham and has been a Swanage Railway volunteer since he was a teenager

Inside the Train Shed

I had an early start to the day today.

At 0815 there was a knock at the door.

It was the Royal Mail postie.

I had an email saying that my parcel was going to be delivered by 1500.

By the time I had thrown my dressing gown on and rushed to the front door with the keys, he was already filling out the 'undelivered card'.

I opened the front door and he looked up at me and said "Oh, sorry mate", laughing.

I took the parcel from him and went back to bed muttering.

I then slept until 1130.

Well, here's the parcel................

Oooh! An eBay box!

I wonder what's inside? :)

Another step closer towards delivering the South Wales Metro

From 2 June passengers from across the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff will benefit from more frequent services later into the night as delivery of the south Wales Metro moves another step closer.

9c281b2c7f7e4a75a44023ad1f01661d.jpg

June 2024 timetable change

New timetables on the Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert, Rhymney, City and Coryton lines will provide more regular services improving connectivity between the south Wales valleys and the capital city.

These changes include:
  • Increase from 6 to 8 trains per hour between Cardiff and Pontypridd, with all 8 calling at Treforrest Estate
  • Increase from 4 to 6 trains per hour between Caerphilly and Cardiff
  • Increase from 1 to 2 trains per hour between Rhymney and Cardiff
  • More frequent evening services between Cardiff and Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr
  • A Sunday service on the Cardiff City line for the first time
  • A new service from Pontypridd through to Cardiff Bay without the need to change at Queen Street
These changes will signal a new way of travelling for passengers, providing them with more choice and on some routes quicker commutes to and from the city.

For example, from June customers travelling from Aberdare, Llandaf, Cathays or Queen Street will have the option to change trains at Pontypridd or Radyr to reach their destination quicker.

The Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport, Ken Skates said: “This is an important step on the journey to deliver the South Wales Metro.

“The new timetable will mean more frequent journeys for passengers – improving connectivity, connecting people and creating opportunity.”

These timetable improvements are another step towards delivering the South Wales Metro which will eventually see four trains per hour from Treherbert, Aberdare, Rhymney and Merthyr to/from Cardiff.

Colin Lea, Planning and Performance Director at Transport for Wales said: “This change will deliver a host of benefits to customers across our Core Valley Routes.

“We’re making the change now so people can get some of those benefits early before we start introducing electric trains on these routes with an even more frequent service and faster journey times.

“The key message is to check before you travel if you use our valley line services.”

Elsewhere on the mainline network there will be some minor changes and all customers should check their journey details from 2 June onwards to ensure they have the latest information.

TfW Valley Lines Map

Metro Changes

The changes are the next step in the creation of the South Wales Metro, which will eventually see 4 trains per hour from Treherbert, Aberdare, Rhymney and Merthyr to/from Cardiff.

In order to run additional services through Cardiff, Aberdare services will run via the City line into Cardiff Central before looping back via Cardiff Queen Street to Merthyr Tydfil, rather than running through to Bridgend and Barry Island via the Vale of Glamorgan as they do today.

Trains from Merthyr Tydfil will come into Cardiff via Queen Street to Central and will loop back via the City line to Aberdare.

The changes mean Aberdare services gain additional calls at City Line stations including Fairwater and Ninian Park close to the busy employment area of Sloper Road as well as sporting and retail facilities.

For customers from Aberdare wanting quicker journeys to Llandaf, Cathays or Queen Street, there is the option to change at Pontypridd or Radyr.

Trains on the Rhymney line (including Caerphilly and Bargoed) will run through to Penarth, Barry Island and Bridgend via the Vale of Glamorgan line.

Trains from Coryton will now run through Cardiff Central to Penarth, rather than following round to Radyr on the City line.

Recent improvements elsewhere in Wales

In addition to these key improvements being delivered in south Wales as part of the June timetable, Transport for Wales has also seen a huge jump in performance on the Wrexham to Bidston line recently.

This followed the December 2023 timetable change where the line saw an increase to one train every 45 minutes.

This has been coupled with a massive 65% rise in people using the T1 bus network that connects Carmarthen with Aberystwyth.

This year has also seen the introduction of direct Ebbw Vale to Newport services for the first time in 60 years, the return of hourly rail services between Chester and Liverpool and brand new trains introduced to west Wales, Maesteg and Ebbw Vale.

Our June 2024 timetable will see an increase in services between Cardiff Central and Cheltenham Spa.

Cardiff Central Event

The Six Nations and European Qualifiers fixtures saw a significant surge in passenger numbers, with 5 major events passing without any significant safety incidents.

TfW implemented a comprehensive train and customer plan informed by previous feedback which included additional, retimed and strengthened services to meet the demand.

Georgina Wills, Customer Delivery and Events Planning Manager at Transport for Wales said:

“We are incredibly proud of our teams who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to accommodate the influx of fans for these major events.

“The successful movement of 100,000 fans through Cardiff Central station is a testament to our commitment to providing reliable and efficient transport services.

“Building on this success, we’re now looking forward to a busy summer season with a number of major events scheduled starting with Bruce Springsteen concert this weekend.”

TfW will be providing additional capacity where possible on routes in/out of Cardiff on Sunday (5 May) but there are a reduced number of services on a Sunday and trains are expected to be very busy, customers are advised to allow plenty of time for their journey.

Post-event queues for mainline rail services will be on Central Square and queues for Valleys services will be to the rear of the station. Cardiff Queen Street will close at 21:30 except for accessible access and passengers that wish to travel to Cardiff Bay.

Due to the timing of the event, there are no post-event services to Birmingham or North Wales. Engineering cutbacks have been arranged with Amey Infrastructure Wales and Network Rail to facilitate the running of additional services post event.

Strengthening and limited additional services have been arranged on the following routes:

Ebbw Vale, Barry Island, Aberdare, Treherbert, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhymney, Newport, Carmarthen and Marches (Hereford & Gloucester).

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience for all upcoming summer events, TfW encourage fans to plan their journeys in advance using the TfW website or app.

Summer Upcoming Events
  • 5th May: Bruce Springsteen
  • 11th June: Pink
  • 18th June: Taylor Swift
  • 25th June: Foo Fighters
  • 9th August Billy Joel

Major milestone reached in improving accessibility at Llanelli station

Network Rail has successfully installed the main span for the footbridge which will provide step-free access between the two platforms at Llanelli station.

Bridge span is installed at Llanelli station as part of construction of accessible footbridge

Contractors AmcoGiffen installed the span overnight on Saturday, while the station was closed to passengers, with a temporary road closure of Great Western Crescent in place to allow access to the site.

The process of lifting and placing the span took two hours, and it followed recent work to install the landings and stairs on both platforms.

The next milestone at Llanelli station will see the lift shafts installed in the coming weeks as the project gathers pace.

Colas HST power car 43301

Colas Rail has agreed to have its HST set used at the upcoming Severn Valley Railway gala, which runs from the 16th until the 19th May.

43301 and 43303 will be joined with three coaches to be used on local services during the four day event.

Another pair of Class 20s, owned by Michael Owen, will now appear at the gala, with the specific numbers being 20205, 20007, 20048, 20189 and 20142.

The Colas Class 70 that was due to visit for the event can now no longer attend but the SVR has said that it hopes another Colas locomotive will be made available.

RailAdventure power cars 43468 and 43480 will also visit the gala along with a Freightliner Class 70, GBRf Class 73 No. 73119, GBRf Class 69 No. 69009, a Freightliner Class 59, Class 37 37409 ‘Loch Awe' and Class 46 No. D182 as well as members from the SVR home fleet.

Class 43, 43303 owned by Colas will appear at the SVR's Spring Diesel Festival

“Right now, we're in a period when enthusiast interest in these vehicles is at an all-time high. It's fair to say that the Colas set has particular rarity value for diesel enthusiasts, as it's generally used for test train duties on the main line and it's pretty much unheard of for it to carry passengers. It's a real privilege to have this at our event and we're very grateful to Colas for agreeing to its appearance.

“We're delighted too that Michael Owen has agreed to a further pair of Class 20s appearing at the Spring Diesel Festival, bringing the total of this class to five across the event. We'll have two pairs of Class 20s hauling full-line services and one single locomotive rostered on local services.”

Yorkshire railway returns Railbus to National Railway Museum

26ab8f4d-1b5f-4b66-95c6-2b58ce712790.jpg

LEV1 post restoration

Railbus number LEV1 has been returned to the National Railway Museum, the Wensleydale Railway has announced.

Based on the Leyland National Bus and built in 1975, LEV 1 is an experimental railbus that was the beginning of the design for the Pacer trains of the 1980s.

LEV1 has been on loan to the Wensleydale Railway since October 2012 and has been in service for several years.

Before it heads to Locomotion – Shildon, LEV1 was cosmetically restored by the team at the Wensleydale Railway.

“As a former Director of the National Railway Museum, I fully recognise that railway heritage and preservation is not just about the eye-catching steam, diesel and electric locomotives, but that those vehicles which played an important role in maintaining services economically in order to guarantee their viability are equally important. LEV 1 played a pivotal role in the eventual development of the much-maligned Pacers, a vehicle which despite its poor publicity actually underpinned a multitude of commuter and secondary services at relatively low cost for many years. LEV 1 therefore can rightly claim its place in the pantheon of British railway history – alongside the likes of the A1, A3 and A4 pacifics, the Royal Scots, Duchesses, Castles and Kings, and the early diesels, and of course the APT and HSTs. It is therefore a personal delight that LEV 1 has now been fully restored cosmetically by the Wensleydale Railway in anticipation of its return to the National Railway Museum where it will assume a modest but important role in telling the story of the passenger experience.
Steve Davies, Director of Wensleydale Railway PLC

Principality Stadium seen from Cardiff Central station

From Cardiff to Swansea, there will be three extra services, with the first departing at 22.44.

There will be six services to Newport, with the first departing at 22.44. These will then continue to either Bristol Temple Meads or Swindon.

As is usual for large events at the Principality Stadium, such as after the Harry Styles concert last year and Six Nations rugby matches, a queuing system will be in place outside the station.

Fans travelling east towards Newport will need to queue on the square in front of Cardiff Central station instead of in Riverside Car Park.

Great Western Railway train at Cardiff Central station

Principality Stadium is expecting nearly 50,000 people to attend the Bruce Springsteen concert this Sunday, many of whom will choose to do so taking advantage of the ease of travelling by train.

Previous events on this scale have shown that our trains get extremely busy, and people will need to queue outside the station to board trains safely.

We encourage all who are using these services to check journey times and connections at gwr.com/check and allow sufficient time to complete your journey home.

Rail manufacturer to use Global Centre of Rail Excellence

train.jpg

Left Julen Barrutia, CAF Commercial Director and right Simon Jones GCRE Chief Executive
Train manufacturer CAF has signed an agreement to use the testing and innovation facility being developed at the Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) in South Wales.

Although Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) is a Spanish company, it will use the facilities at the Global Centre of Rail Excellence for testing rolling stock and technology, development of digital signalling, and wider product innovation.

The agreement was signed by GCRE Chief Executive Simon Jones, CAF Commercial Director Julen Barrutia, and CAF UK Director Richard Garner.

L to R Julen Barrutia CAF Commercial Director, Richard Garner CAF UK Director, Arthur Emyr GCRE Ltd Head of Business Development and Engagement, Paul Woolley CAF, Simon Jones GCRE Ltd Chief Executive at the GCRE site.

The Global Centre of Rail Excellence is a major new research, testing and certification facility for rolling stock, infrastructure and new technologies being constructed at the former Nant Helen opencast mine and Onllwyn washery in The Dulas Valley in South Wales.

The site is just 45 miles from a CAF manufacturing facility at Newport where new trains for Transport for Wales are being constructed.

The agreement will enable CAF to use the site for its rolling stock and digital signals testing.

Among other developments, CAF will use the site for fleet maintenance, staff training and development of ten long-distance tri-mode trains that it will be constructing for London North Eastern Railway to use on the East Coast mainline.

1714938328060.png

CAF and GCRE directors view the construction site.

CAF are one of the major names in global rail and its fantastic to develop this partnership at our new facility in South Wales. The facilities and services we will have available at the Global Centre of Rail Excellence site will support the development of CAFs next generation rolling stock and the innovative new traction technologies they are working on.
It's great news that CAF have recently been announced as the supplier of ten long-distance tri-mode trains for London North-Eastern Railway (LNER) to be used on the East Coast mainline. We look forward to supporting CAF with its rolling stock testing programme.
In particular, our unique to Europe infrastructure testing facilities will support CAF with high quality signals testing and new digital product development, opening up new commercial opportunities for the company, particularly in the transition to net zero. As the UK and Europe move towards decarbonisation, the facilities that GCRE can provide become ever more critical.
With CAF having a production facility in Newport, not far from the GCRE site, this collaboration makes a lot of sense and we are looking forward to working with the company in the different areas of work and high quality innovation they are involved in.
This is a long-term partnership and further highlights the growing commercial confidence in the Global Centre of Rail Excellence as more blue-ribband international manufacturers and operators sign up as customers at our world class facility.
Simon Jones GCRE Chief Executive
We have worked with GCRE since its inception and formalising our relationship is the natural next step. GCRE will be a unique facility and we are fortunate to have it so close to our manufacturing facility in Newport.
We look forward to collaborating with GCRE on research and development programmes and growing the rail industry in Wales.
Richard Garner, CAF UK Director
We're incredibly excited about the partnership and in particular the opportunity it presents for us to test our trains locally.
We believe GCRE will become a hub, a key asset for the rail industry, a place where the next generation for rail technologies will be developed and tested.
We are looking forward to being part of that community.
