Czechia’s Brno City buys fifteen more trams from Škoda Group

image.png

Škoda ForCity Smart 45T

Czech city Brno is to modernise its fleet of trams, buying a further fifteen vehicles from manufacturer Škoda Group.

The city, in the South Moravian region of the Czech Republic, will replace its obsolete KT8-type trams, which date back to the 1980s and '90s, with an additional fifteen ForCity Smart 45T trams.

The Brno City Transport Company (DPMB) will buy these from Škoda Group, using the option under the contract that the two organisations signed last year.

It will pay 75 million Czech Korunas (CZK) per tram (3.2 million euros), totalling CZK 1.125 billion (46 million euros) for the full order.

image.png

Driver's cab of Škoda ForCity Smart 45T tram

The first five of the fifteen trams will arrive in Brno next year, with the remaining ten arriving in 2025.

DPMB has an option to order a further twenty trams of the same type.

The ForCity Smart 45T tram is a two-way, low-floor vehicle comprising three parts with a swivel chassis.

It boasts full vehicle adhesion, which enables it to operate reliably even in adverse weather conditions.

It is thirty-one metres long and can carry up to 233 passengers, 64 seated and 169 standing.

It will operate to a maximum operating speed of seventy kilometres per hour.

The vehicles are air conditioned and have two large multifunctional spaces for wheelchairs, prams or bicycles.

They have a modern information system with screens and panels, and an internal and external camera system to enhance safety.

The interior is equipped with stainless steel handrails, widescreen LCD information monitors and USB chargers, with either RIS2 control and information system or EOC2 validators.

The vehicles can transport multiple wheelchair users, and have four tilting platforms to enable access.

The redesigned driver's cabin has a clear panel, based on simplicity and good visibility, with some controls directly in the driver's seat.

The windscreens are heated, and the front windscreen has daytime running lights.

Regenerative braking returns electricity to the grid, reducing the tram's electricity consumption and thus its operating costs.

Tomáš Ignačák, President Region CZ/SK and Central East Škoda Group, said, “We are glad that our trams have proved their worth in Brno traffic, and the Brno City Transport Company has decided to use the option and purchase more modern vehicles. Passengers can look forward to an increase in the quality of travel and safety. More and more cities are choosing rail vehicles as the backbone of the public transport network due to their higher transport capacity, speed, and efficiency.”

Miloš Havránek, Managing Director of the Brno City Transport Company, said, “The ForCity Smart 45T trams are a welcome addition to our fleet. They meet all our requirements for modern 21st-century vehicles, and our passengers are satisfied. The first five trams in Brno almost exclusively serve line number 8 from Lišně to the University Campus. Both of these stops are terminated by a dead centre, so we make daily use of the bidirectionality of these vehicles. Other trams ordered will also be used on this line.”

Wabtec and Roy Hill unveil first FLXdrive battery locomotive

image.png

Executives from Wabtec and Roy Hill unveil the world’s first battery powered locomotive at the Wabtec plant on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023 in Erie, Pa.

Wabtec and Australian iron ore miner Roy Hill have marked the debut of the FLXdrive battery locomotive, the world's first 100% battery-powered, heavy-haul locomotive for mainline service – and have used the opportunity to support the fight against breast cancer.

The company and its customer unveiled the pink locomotive at a ceremony at Wabtec's design and development centre in Pennsylvania, USA, attended by employees, customer executives, and government and community officials.

Roy Hill's FLXdrive battery-electric locomotive will have an energy capacity of seven megawatt hours (MWh).

Based on the route and company's rail operations, the FLXdrive is expected to reduce fuel costs and emissions by more than ten per cent.

Next, Wabtec will finish installing the battery and test the vehicle on the track.

Then, the locomotive will travel seventeen thousand kilometres (ten-and-a-half thousand miles) to its new home in the mining district of Pilbara in Western Australia.

Executives from Wabtec and Roy Hill Mining, of West Australia, unveil the worlds first battery powered locomotive at the Wabtec plant on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023 in Erie, Pa.. The locomotive is painted pink in recognition of Breast Cancer awareness

Roy Hill currently uses four Wabtec ES44ACi Evolution Series diesel-electric locomotives.

They work in a consist, pulling trains around 2,700 meters (2.7 kilometres or 1.6 miles) long, carrying more than thirty-three thousand tonnes of iron ore.

The new FLXdrive will work with the Wabtec diesel-electric locomotives in a hybrid consist, recharging during the journey by means of regenerative braking.

The FLXdrive manages the overall energy flow and distribution of the train, using its state-of-the-art energy management software.

The vehicle has a battery thermal management system which uses liquid cooling to withstand the heat in Pilbara, where ambient temperatures can exceed 55°C (131°F).

Roy Hill explains that its “iconic” pink livery symbolises its commitment to assisting research into and support for those affected by breast cancer.

To mark the FLXdrive's premiere, Roy Hill, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Wabtec donated fifty thousand US dollars to Linked By Pink, a non-profit organisation of Erie area survivors diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 45.

Over three thousand people die from breast cancer each year in Australia, around 98% of them women.

Flanked by the worlds first battery powered locomotive, Wabtec CEO Refael Santana, right, and Roy Hill CEO Gerhard Veldsman present a check for $50,000 to the emotional staff of Linked By Pink, a breast cancer support group, at the Wabtec plant on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023 in Erie, Pa. The locomotive, which is painted pink in recognition of Breast Cancer awareness, was build by Wabtec for the Roy Hill Mining company

Rafael Santana, President & CEO of Wabtec, said, “This FLXdrive locomotive represents a major step in the journey to a low-to-zero-emission future in the rail industry. The FLXdrive is driven from within by our battery technology and the innovative spirit of our employees. Roy Hill is an ideal customer to partner with given their leadership and excellent operational record.”

Gerhard Veldsman, Chief Executive Officer, of Hancock Prospecting Group Operations, the majority owner of Roy Hill, said, “The foresight of our Executive Chairman, Mrs Gina Rinehart AO, has been instrumental in establishing an environment in which we can successfully leverage the ingenuity of our people alongside key partners like Wabtec to transform our rail and mining operations through next generation technologies.”

“The FLXdrive locomotive represents not only a first for the Pilbara, but a first for the mining industry. The technological smarts that have gone into the development of the loco makes it well suited for our rail network. By using regenerative braking, it will charge its battery on the 344 kilometers (214 miles) downhill run from our mine to port facility and use that stored energy to return to the mine, starting the cycle all over again. This will not only enable us to realise energy efficiencies but also lower operating costs.”

Steam locomotive 5428 Eric Treacy’s Golden Anniversary celebrated by North Yorkshire Moors Railway

image.png

5428 Eric Treacy
LMS No. 5428 ‘Eric Treacy' was in action on Sunday 5 November, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its arrival at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).

The locomotive arrived during NYMR's first year, so it is a double golden jubilee.

LMS No. 5428 ‘Eric Treacy' first left Tyseley Locomotive Works on 3 November 1973.

It stopped in York on its way to the NYMR, where it was joined by the ex-GNR Class J13 (LNER Class J52) No. 1247 from the National Collection.

They arrived on the NYMR together on 5 November 1973, and both have been there ever since.

image.png

John Hunt, who is a longstanding volunteer at the NYMR, was one of a group who went to Tyseley in 1973 to repair the locomotive ready for its journey to NYMR's Grosmont engine shed.

John recalls, “‘I can't believe it's been 50 years! On the day of the move, it was shunted in the yard by Flying Scotsman, and I can remember it was awfully foggy on the way to York.

‘Eric' was then pulled by a class 37 to for its final leg of the journey where there was much excitement at Grosmont as it arrived on NYMR metals, where it has remained for the last 50 years and an icon in the history of the NYMR.”

John, now aged 78, started at the NYMR in February 1969 as a photographer.

The following year, he became a loco cleaner, and then qualified as a fireman in September 1973.

In August 1997, John became a fireman passed to drive, and in April 2004 qualified to drive diesels.

Major refurbishment of historic Dovey Junction viaduct along the Cambrian line is complete

Region & Route: Wales & Western: Wales & Borders

image.png

Team at work on Dovey Junction viaduct

The major refurbishment of Dovey Junction viaduct in North Wales has been completed ahead of schedule after Network Rail teams worked through months of extreme weather and around the tides.

The 360ft-long viaduct carries the Cambrian line over the Afon Dyfi (Dovey River) through the habitats of the area’s protected species, including ospreys and grey geese.

Work started on site in September 2022 and took eight months, with a pause between March and mid-August 2023 to reduce the impact on wildlife.

Built in 1863, the historical timber structure in Powys has 15 pairs of wooden piles buried deep into the bed of the estuary, posing numerous challenges for the Network Rail team and contractor AmcoGiffen.

The tidal nature of the Afon Dyfi meant that the environment was ever-changing, and the use of pontoons to access each of the wooden structures allowed the work to be carried out safely and efficiently.

image.png

View along Dovey Junction viaduct

The team successfully replaced parts of the wooden structure with Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) resin, a polymer made from recycled waste plastic.

It means that the viaduct will be more durable and requires less maintenance, reducing disruption to local habitats.

Network Rail’s commitment to protecting the environment didn’t stop there.

Approximately 77 tonnes of timber removed from the structure was reused, reducing waste.

The team are also donating around 90 metres of track panels to Gwili Railway, which is a heritage line, in the coming weeks.

Network Rail’s route director for Network Rail Wales & Borders Nick Millington said: “It has been a huge challenge to complete the refurbishment of Dovey Junction Viaduct, working in storms and extreme weather while coping with flooding and a lot of mud.

“As well as completing the job safely, great care was taken to protect the environment along this beautiful stretch of railway and to recycle materials.

“We'd like to thank the local community and our passengers for their patience during this work and as we continue our restoration further along the line at Barmouth viaduct.

“These two projects will boost the resilience and reliability of this line for generations to come. "

image.png

Dovey viaduct completed

AmcoGiffen operations director Andy Crowley said: “Safe, successful and early completion of the work at Dovey Junction viaduct is an incredible achievement for the whole team, including our supply partners. In addition, the whole project truly showcases what genuine, deep-rooted collaboration will look like in the years to come.”

Chief customer and culture officer at TfW Marie Daly said: “This significant investment in the Cambrian Line by Network Rail will strengthen resilience on the route for many years to come and help us to provide more consistent services for our customers.

“Rail replacement buses remain in place until December 3 and there are some changes to the bus routes in Barmouth from November 6 due to work being carried out by Welsh Water, so it’s important passengers continue to check for the latest information before travelling.”

The railway remains closed between Machynlleth and Pwllheli until Sunday 3 December to allow the restoration to safely continue at Barmouth.

Transport for Wales will continue to operate a combination of bus replacements and train services along the Cambrian line.

Passengers are advised to check before they travel at tfw.wales for more information.

With many of its colleagues, including guards and drivers, being former members of the Armed Forces, supporting the Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Day is South Western Railway's way of paying tribute to both them and all current and previous generations of service personnel.

Peter Williams, SWR's Customer and Commercial Director, said: “Remembrance Sunday is a time for people across the nation to pause and reflect on the sacrifice made by so many of our servicemen and women.

“At South Western Railway we are glad that we are once again able to recognise and honour that sacrifice by offering free travel to service personnel and veterans to attend Remembrance Sunday events. This initiative is particularly important to us as many of our colleagues come from service backgrounds.”

Engineering specialists Leaky Finders acquire its own steam locomotive

image.png

9629 frames

The engineering specialists Leaky Finders Ltd, from Exeter in Devon, who have many years of experience in boiler making, machining, fabrication and painting of steam locomotives, has now acquired its own locomotive in the form of Great Western Railway 5700 Class 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive No. 9629.

The locomotive was built at the famous GWR works at Swindon in 1945, and saw service at depots in South Wales at Cardiff Canton, Cardiff East Dock, and Pontypool Road, as well as at Oswestry in Shropshire and Exeter in Devon.

Its last depot was at Pontypool Road, from where it was withdrawn from British Railways service in October 1964.

Although 9629 escaped the cutter's torch at the now infamous Barry scrap yard and was saved for preservation, since then it has never been steamed.

The new owners are very fortunate that 9629's previous owners amassed a considerable amount of the components necessary to bring it back into service, as well spares and many of the wooden patterns that are necessary in order to be able to cast new components.

Deutsche Bahn locomotives retrofitted with ETCS for the first time

image.png

Stadler is preparing locomotives for ETCS

To accelerate the rollout of the European Train Control System (ETCS), Deutsche Bahn (DB), Stadler, and its engineering joint venture AngelStar have, for the first time, equipped locomotives with the system without any involvement from the locomotive manufacturer.

In the coming years. around 13,000 locomotives and multiple units in Germany will need to be retrofitted for ETCS, there is a potential bottleneck the capacity of manufacturers to retrofit the necessary equipment is limited.

The retrofits will be needed because an increasing number of railway lines require the use of ETCS-fitted locomotives.

image.png

ETCS in the driver's cab of a British ETCS-equipped train

Two DB Cargo locomotives were chosen for retrofitting using Stadler's GUARDIA Baseline 3.4.0 ETCS automatic train protection system, which was the first time that DB locomotives from the 185.2 series had been retrofitted with Stadler's ETCS system.

image.png

Before the first locomotive received its re-approval as “First of Class”, a considerable amount of particularly complex pioneering work was required.

However, official approval of the second locomotive was more straightforward as it had converted in the same way.

Also, as it was considered to be structurally identical to the first one, it was awarded “Conformity to Type” status, leading the way for all future retrofits performed in the same manner to be referred back to this model.
