"The Human Development Index (HDI) is a tool...to measure and rank countries' levels of social and economic development. Four principal areas of examination are used to rank countries: mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling, life expectancy at birth and gross national income per capita. This index makes it possible to follow changes in development levels over time and to compare the development levels of different countries." — Investopedia
"The Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and have a decent standard of living." — United Nations Development Programme
This worldbuilding thread will document the standard of living within the countries of Eras. The real-life Human Development Index (HDI) exists for a similar purpose: to summarise the development of the world's countries based on the aggregation of metrics such as education, income and average lifespan. The highest score possible is a 1, while the lowest score possible is a 0.
Keep in mind that while the HDI was made to assess standards of living and development, it does not show the full picture. The United Nations Development Programme, the creator of the tool, have said it themselves: "the HDI simplifies and captures only part of what human development entails...[and] does not reflect on inequalities, poverty, human security, empowerment, etc."
How do I calculate my HDI?
If you have an idea of your nation's average life expectancy, GDP per capita, and average years of education, you most likely have enough information to calculate your nation's HDI.
The equation to calculate it is long-winded and confusing at first glance, but luckily this website allows you to simply input information and get an HDI as the result. You can also base your HDI on a guesstimation.
NOTE: For consistency, the HDI should be accurate to the year of 2018.
