They were both young, when Richard first saw her.

He was standing there on a balcony enjoying the summer air.

It was another one of those opportunities to showcase himself. His Mother insisted that it was necessary for any future ruler. But Richard was not convinced. The balcony was a suitable vantage point for him to observe the party, without being stifled by the hundreds of guests.

As he looked out over the party, he saw her make her way through the crowd. As wise as even the most advanced of politicians, it was his Grandmother she greeted first. With a polite curtsy and a kiss of Amira's hand she continued to make her way through the crowd. She stopped just below the balcony where Richard was standing.

The eyes of the crowd followed her wherever she would go.

The bell of the ball, the grandest of beauties. Her conversation intellectual and engaging, her wit quick and sharp, and her hair the most serene of any Richard had seen. He was totally focused on her and knew then that he must speak to her. If only he could find the courage.

Too nervous and reserved, Richard instead admired her from a distance. As she engaged in a particularly exuberant conversation with his uncle, Prince Alexander, Richard was suddenly startled as his Mother approached him from behind and asked "Who are you admiring?" with just a hint of amusement.

In his startlement, Richard almost dropped the glass he was holding. He caught it just as it tipped over the balcony, its contents of lemon lime and bitters could not be saved. Out they poured, directly onto the princess below.

The princess gasped and looked up at him. Seeing Richard looking concerned and lost for words, she smiled and began to laugh. As did Richard, his Mother and other guests below.

"You're exactly like you Father" his Mother had said "A charming clutz".

Richard ran down the stairs and apologised to the young Princess. She smiled at him and together they laughed some more. They sat down and spoke for several hours, ignoring almost all of those around them.

They agreed to meet later in the gardens. They would have to be quiet because they'd be dead if their parents knew.

That was several years ago. Now, Richard was attempting to build up the courage to go and tell his Grandmother of his plans. It was not long until his coronation and this news could not wait.

In a distant land, the Princess was preparing to do the same with her parents.

"Mother give me strength" Richard said as he entered his Grandmother's study.
