Normally wearing a set of armor, tonight he dons a black suit with a fancy red tie and a pin with the Andrennian flag on it Although he does still have his armor somewhere. He also still has a large axe on his back, the very same he lugged around while conquering his homeland of Andrenne. It’s a shining steel axe with a Viking style bearded blade and a large backspike, sitting on a long mahogany pole with a single spike at the top.
Traits:
What does your character like? Oswald loves to spar and drink with his "brothers" (close friends), but also loves to spend time at sea on a longboat. A large fan of collecting armor. Also, animals, hunting, smithing, meat, beer, axes, and the ocean.
What does your character dislike? Oswald dislikes anyone that seems to challenge his role as a leader and generally is not a fan of Messianism as a whole. On a more practical level, he dislikes the heat, mosquitoes, the Ninhundish, and any of the families that got away from him during his conquests of Andrenne (including the Lothbroks).
Good habits: Oswald is a natural leader and is able to make the best out of a bad situation, a brave leader on top of that. He's not afraid to take a stand for what he believes in or to take risks. He is generally a gracious and generous person. Despite what many gather from his appearance he is a wise, smart man.
Bad habits: Oswald does not like to be pent up for too long, and has a temper that when reached can make him scarily aggressive, stubborn, and to an extent can get in the way of his thinking process. Oswald can get a bit loud sometimes without realizing it. While he may not be afraid to take a stand this can mean he's very outspoken.
Character Flaws: His temper can cause him to appear aggressive and rude to others, and sometimes his drinking can get out of hand. Other than that he tends to appear intimidating to others which can be off putting. When in a depressed mood he will isolate himself and it can be very difficult to speak to him or get him to do anything other than what he wants to do.
Character Strengths: Oswald is a physically strong person, capable of great feats. His wisdom comes into play on and off the battlefield, and when people get to know him he's a very caring person. He does not sit there and take it and will stand up for himself.
Weaknesses: If someone he truly loves is put in front of him in a precarious situation he may choose them over most other things, such as doing what's right for the greater good, what's better in the long term, etc. He may also leave himself emotionally vulnerable after a tough situation and it takes a long time for him to truly forget and forgive
Describe their temperament or personality:
A surprisingly charismatic and kind person despite his appearance, he tries to be strong for others when they can't be. A natural born leader, Oswald will always be there for those that are loyal to him. He himself is a loyal, steadfast man. His temper can be troublesome but he will still be the first to apologize after a conflict he believes was wrong.
Interests:
Sparring, drinking, smithing, and sailing.
Does your character have any phobias?
A fear of abandonment by his closest friends and family looms over Oswald, and a fear of disappointing the Gods is present in him as well.
Does your character have any quirks?
Mumbles things to himself, always knows which direction he's walking or facing, ambidextrous.
Does your character hold particular morals or values dear?
He holds his steadfast bravery in the face of danger dearly, and values being a gracious King.
What would your character never leave home without?
His axe and a horn of beer.
Character's Backstory (Historical Figure)
Oswald was born in 835 CE, in Aastenvarnaa, in the Kingdom of Ander, now known as Kjelld, in the province of Vaska, Andrenne. He was born a son to a declining formerly prominent noble family in a viking clan known as the Aerthratii, and having his father die in 846, he was forced to take care of his mother and siblings, being the eldest son. Over time he learned many values from this and although his family was declining in status, he was able to provide for them by becoming an apprentice blacksmith by 849 CE, at the age of 14. In 856 CE, when he had taken over as the blacksmith at the age of 21, the Kingdom of Ander invaded the small viking clan of Aerthratii, taking their land and officially disbanding the clan.
This actually had little effect on Oswald as he had only been a proper raiding viking 3 or 4 times. The clan was integrated into the Kingdom and from there Oswald's family was recognized as noble blood once more, elevating him and his family's status again. Despite this his family was still one of lesser noble families and Oswald had to informally educate himself in the Kingdom, which he did. Being the leader of his family due to his father not being present, Oswald was forced to fight for the King of Ander at the time, Agnar Iorundvall II. Forced to swear fealty to the King, Oswald proved himself in battle multiple times and worked his way up to true nobility as one of his most prominent lords. From here, Oswald was deeply wronged by Agnar. Oswald had spoken out about various things Agnar II did over time, typically morally wrong things. This angered Agnar II who stripped him of his land, rank, and title. Oswald would use this as fuel to start a peasant rebellion who recognized Oswald as their leader, and in a quick war lasting only 2 years, Oswald was crowned as the new "Grand King" of Ander.
From here he began Oswald's Conquest at the young age of 25, conquering and unifying Andrenne under his rule, forcing others to swear fealty to him or face death. Many took the option of death and were executed in the then capital of Ander, Fjellne. A few families escaped from his grip, including the Lothbroks of Heorot (a kingdom/region of northeast Andrenne) who would go on to form Prydania. When the Conquest ended in 875 AD, when Oswald was now 40, he began to finally consolidate his rule and sort out his new unified Kingdom properly. He would go on to be one of the longest reigning kings of Andrenne, dying in 927 CE at the age of 92- Spectacular for the medieval era. Many considered him living into this very old age (for the time) to be a sign that the Gods had blessed him at birth. Oswald went down as one of the most legendary kings of Andrenne and is still renown to this day. There are many stories and legends about him and he has many titles, including "The Northern Conquerer", "The Last Pagan King", "The Wyvern King", and "The Grand King of the North".
