MERILIAN PROTECTORATE OFFICE

As one of the longest standing neutral nations in Eras and having not fought in a war or taken a side in a conflict since the mid 1700’s, the Merilian League operates the Merilian Protectorate Office as part of the League Diplomatic Corps and the Ministry of Diplomatic Affairs. The Merilian League, holding the role of a protecting power, must be appointed by the sending (protected) state and must also be acceptable to the host (receiving) state and therefore the League will always retain diplomatic relations with both states.

Should diplomatic relations between two nations become so hostile that no diplomatic relations or consular staff exist in each other’s territory, a comprehensive mandate may be requested. In this role, the Merilian Protectorate Office shall carry out most diplomatic functions on behalf of the protected state. Traditionally the authority granted to the Office are representing the protected country’s interests, visa and passport applications, changes in civil status and other consular protections for that country’s citizens.

Should diplomatic relations between two nations be broken but they are willing to exchange personnel on an informal basis, an interests section mandate may be requested. In this role, the Merilian Protectorate Office serves as the mechanism for facilitating this exchange with the original embassy remaining staffed by nationals of the protected state. The embassy is formally termed an interests section of the Merilian League. Additional diplomatic roles may be worked out in an agreement with the League for less or more diplomatic assistance.
