Oh Ahoy! Pirates of the North Pacific

Modern_Day_Pirates.jpg

The Kitoshi Times-A band of armed pirates boarded a Nasanian Merchant Marine Containership full of goods bound for the Kingdom of Davidland this week. On 25 April, five robbers armed with AK47's boarded an underway bulk carrier at 0230 hrs local time approximately 4.6nm North-northeast off the Funkadelian Coast. The robbers threatened the sleepy crew and commandeered the ship at gunpoint. The crew members noticed the robbers and shrugged, prompting the robbers to take command of the ship with the crew as hostages.

There has been a cluster of activity reported near the strait of Guslantis with seven incidents reported since the beginning of April. It has become increasingly common for robbers to board underway bulk carriers due the vessels’ relatively low freeboard when laden. Of the seven reported incidents throughout April, two were against underway bulk carriers, two against underway tankers and one against an underway container vessel. The capability of pirates to frequently board underway vessels is a concerning development that places vessels transiting in the region at a heightened risk of attack seven per month.

The Nasanian government has yet to decide what to do about this act of treachery. The ship owners and insurers have found that it's more cost-effective to pay ransoms and are currently offering slightly over $1 million per vessel, claiming that's cheaper than buying a new ship. Admiral Lahti has rejected this course of action and has vowed to avenge the stolen honour of the Nasanian Imperial Navy. A junior air marshal, whose name shall remain classified, is recommending an "air campaign against the dastardly pirate menace!" Prime Minister Rami Kosonen on the other hand is recommending the government pursue international help and has decided to petition the international community for aid against the mighty Pirate armada!

One thin' be fer certain though, 'tis year be th' year 'o th' scurvy pirate. Yarr!

The Chancellor Kreutzer of the Kannexan Empire, under the Kaiser's orders, has ordered die Kaiserliche Marine (Navy) to mobilize against piracy in the West Sea. The Reich has pledged a Anti-Pirate Task Force consisting of a command ship, a destroyer (ein Zerstörer), a frigate (eine Fregatte), and two corvettes (zwei Korvetten). The task force is ready to be deployed immediately to protect international commerce and uphold law in the West Sea. The Reichsregierung (Imperial Government) requests acquiescence to broad powers of search and patrol in and near Nasanian waters.

All Nebulan commerce vessels traveling through the area will carry two squads of military guards. In addition, we will send the light cruiser Astrus to sweep the area periodically.

To Rami Kosonen, Prime Minister of Nasania

Dalies and companies situated within the borders of Dalies have been doing more and more business overseas. One of these businesses, Bona Mare Inc., a large shipbuilding and seller of container ships and other vessels capable of upholding maritime trade, has a facility in Bustos, just west of Nasania and near where these pirates are attacking. Fortunately, the ships built by Bona Mare have not been attacked, but I fear it is a matter of time til one of these band of brigands do eventually attack, board, and take a ship. With the mindset of safety of innocent lives along with the mindset that these pirates must be stopped, the government of Dalies has decided to take affirmative action against these criminals. I feel that a sense of unity and naval stability will shake these pirates and perhaps will end the attacks on these innocent ships. This is why I propose that a joint-naval exercise is held in the waters southeast of Malvad.

The joint-naval exercise will strengthen bonds and to help our naval forces work together and cooperate to prevent and put an end to these vicious attacks and criminal ransoms. Whether or not the invitation to take part of this exercise, which is a simple 140 nautical mile patrol in formation that consist of ships from both of our nations and any other countries that want to participate in the event, a Dalies Navy task unit (2-5 ships) will be traveling near Bustos and will spread out, escorting any ships that are going south near Guslantis.

I strongly urge the nation of Nasania to join in this joint-naval exercise to show these barbaric pirates that the nations of the North Pacific will not stand for this. I also invite any other nation willing to fight back these pirates to join in on this event and show of naval strength and dominance. Thank you and have a nice day.

Declaration of the Rhuvish Supreme Congress

A small village in eastern Rhuvanland has recently been attacked and looted by people who appear to fit the description you have provided of these pirates. We would thus like to join your joint naval exercise. A Rhuvish navy taskforce of 5 frigates joined by a Syrixian taskforce of 2 frigates, one aircraft carrier and one submarine will be participating.

We await Nasanian orders on where to go, and we assure you no pirates we find will be left unarrested.

-Helmuth Albrecht, Speaker of the Rhuvish Supreme Congress

The Kingdom of DavidLand is disgusted by the actions of these barbaric pirates.

In response to recent events we will deploy the cruiser RS Kesler to the area to stop future incidents. In addition, the Ministry of Interior has requested shipping companies no longer pay ransom money.

Hans had served on the corvette Nordmark for a few months, but he was by no means new. His father had been a Wallei fisherman, who took his three sons to get breakfast out in the sea every morning -- Hans practically grew up on the water. So he was unfazed by the vast, flat shining face of the ocean that stretched all the way to the horizon, or the gentle splish-splash of the waves against the hull of the small warship. The playfulness of the waves sung him to sleep every night.

Sure, das Meer ist eine schöne Dame, as his father used to say. The sea breeze, the seagull scouts that told of a nearby coast, and the shining sun -- this was all beautiful. But the one thing he couldn't stand... the utter boredom!

It didn't help that this was a relatively smaller warship, with less of an interesting crew, or that the Empire had been at peace with its neighbors for years. Instead of combat, Hans played cards and chess with his bunkmates every day. The bottom of each chess piece was magnetic, so that the pieces wouldn't fall off the board. When he was off-duty, Hans would take the chess pieces and stick 'em around on the metallic halls of the cabin, letting his crew-mates find them for that evening's game. Das Meer... yes, the sea was beautiful, but couldn't there be a little more variety? He didn't mind waking up to the sight of endless water every day, as long as there was a break of some sort in between...

The blaring klaxons woke Hans from his slumber. Rubbing his eyes, he shifted in his bunk, even as movement flurried around him. The blinking red light bathed the cabin room. "Alle Mann an Deck!" shouted the captain's voice, electrified by the loudspeakers. "This is not a drill!" Hans's eyes shot open and he jumped out of bed, his foot landing on an upright chess piece -- "Scheisse!" -- and ran out.

An unidentified ship -- more like a boat, actually -- had been spotted over the horizon and was refusing to stop. Compared to the proud steel bastion of Kannexan naval power that Nordmark was, here was a shanty little motorboat speeding along the horizon. Now, it could hold anything from the body of the dictator's wife the next country over, some illegal immigrants, or a Scheisston of cocaine. Contraband booty. All the more suspicious, the boat did not carry a flag, nor did it stop when beckoned to over radio and light signals. No, it was clearly trying to escape.

A quick pop-pop-pop sounded as a hail of pellets smacked the side of Nordmark's hull and fell harmlessly into the water. A few dents here and there, perhaps -- "Send the bill to these pirates." Within two minutes of the captains' orders, a helicopter's wings began to cut the saltine ocean air and the copter lifted off with a team of marines inside. The weaponry on-board included missiles, grenades, and a huge machine gun, all definitely overkill, but the prospect of first combat since simulation training made everyone's blood boil.

Yet the smugglers were not stupid, and did not want to be blown out of the water by missiles meant for vessels ten times larger than theirs, so they raised the flag of surrender. The Kannexans, as citizens of a civilized Empire, spared their lives and took them into custody.

"I should've joined the Coast Guard..." muttered Hans.

The Betel, a Nebulan trade ship, was running a trade route through central TNP, when several pirate vessels appeared on the horizon, racing toward her rapidly.
"Battle stations! Battle stations!" a loudspeaker blared on deck. Ever since the reports of pirates had begun, all Nebulan cargo and trade vessels had been given two squads of Marines to guard the ships. Each squad had been equipped with a mortar. In addition, all ships that regularly plied the routes through the Belschaft straits were equipped with a cannon on the bow. Fortunately, the Betel was one of these, and the gun swung around to fire at the approaching pirates.
BLAM!
A pirate vessel exploded as the shell collided with it head-on, instantly killing the crew. But five remained, and the men reloading it fumbled with the shell.
ping-ping-ping-ping-ping!
The pirates opened up with assault rifles. The bullets dented the ships hull. Marines ran to the rail, returning fire. One enterprising soldier grabbed a mortar, propped it against the rail, and fired it, hitting another pirate ship, which started burning. A hail of bullets ripped what remained of it to pieces.
The other four pirate ships kept coming. Two Marines fell, and the others slowly retreated from the rail. The deck gun blew another pirate ship out of the water. Three left. The pirate ships were close enough that the Marines could hit them with grenades. Another pirate ship was hit directly with a grenade and began sinking.
Then the pirates poured heavy fire up the sides of the Betel. The Marines were forced to leave the bow of the ship. The gunners had fled. Grappling hooks snagged the rail. Shouts indicated that the pirates were scaling the side of the ship.
The Marines had taken cover behind several crates. One, with a sniper rifle, began shooting hooks, with accompanying screams from the pirates. But some made it onto the deck. They were all gunned down.
