Unrest in Crilalia

plembobria

-
Back in October, I started a news-style RP called "Unrest in Crilalia!" It was the story of the revolution that resulted in Plembobria's transition from absolute to constitutional monarchy.

I didn't know much about RP at the time -- and if I did -- I would have made it into an ordinary character-style RP.

It seems kind of odd to start an RP that technically happened in the past, but I'm dying to role-play, and this idea seems interesting. The thread is here. I'd like to RP this. Post if you're interested. There are a few things I'd like to change about the story: (Apparently I can change the past.)

1) It's kind of absurd for a King to randomly dissolve a provincial government arbitrarily, so I think there needs to be some valid reason why he would do that. The government of Crilalia was granted semi-autonomy at the founding of the Kingdom. All the monarchs respected that. Perhaps there was some kind of corruption afoot in the province, which led the King to dissolve the government. However, the government of Crilalia would have had to publicly misled the public about their dissolution. (Hence the protesting.)

2) The statement release by the King in the aforementioned thread was absurd. The King is not a tyrant, and is genuinely concerned for the well-being of the people.

I'd like someone else to play the part of the Crilalian elites, and I'd like that person to be a relatively decent and experienced RPer.

I'd like this RP to start with the events leading up to the actual dissolution of the Crilalian government, to the drafting of the constitution, to the election of Sydney Briggs as Prime Minister.

Please post any ideas!

I can be the elite if you want. I can also provide an international viewpoint. Could be feeding the flames of the protesters.

How about the elites in the provincial government were selling out the resources of the province to foreign business interests, to the point where they basically abdicate their responsibilities to the companies, sort of like what went on with United Fruit? The elites begin taunting and defying the king and the government with their power and wealth, the king calls their bluff and dissolves the provincial government, expels the foreign companies, seizing both their assets, but cannot replace the infrastructure and services the companies were providing. As a last-ditch survival tactic the deposed elites stir up the riots as an attempt to depose the king or at least get their power back.

Genius! I was racking my brain thinking of what they could have been doing.

I would gladly participate in this RP. I'd like to get an opportunity to do some character RP over here.

Floresque would likely support the monarchy, but its influence militarily is pretty near 0. Economically, I've always imagined Floresque as a rich trading hub like Singapore that could afford to pour money into a foreign government. Any support, however, would have to be strictly non-official, even if it is pretty obvious to any foreign observer. Floresque tries to style itself as a republic despite rampant election fraud and restrictions on political freedoms.

Cool, glad it was helpful. I look forward to reading it.

Some details on the pre-revolution government of Plembobria:

The reign of Queen Nara (from 1977 to 2011) saw several democratic reforms. She ordered her provincial governors to form elected legislative councils for their respective provinces, and allowed each province to elect one delegate to join her Privy Council (alongside her ministers.) The Monarch became and arbiter of inter-provincial affairs. All provincial governments were still subject to the Crown. Crilalia had an elected government from the beginning, which was sovereign from the Crown, but they had no delegate.

The Privy Council was largely responsible for writing Plembobria's constitution, which prevented it from becoming a tool which could be exploited by the corrupt Crilalians.

After the constitution was established, the Crilalians established the Revolutionary Democratic Party, so they could attempt to control the entire nation. The RDP won a plurality in the House of Commons, and was able to form a coalition government with the Socialist Front. However, the plan backfired, since many RDP members were from other provinces as well, and the honest Sydney Briggs was elected party leader, and became the Prime Minister.

So it was a constitutional monarchy, then the king dissolves the government, and everyone just lets him (he had the military's support, I presume)? And it took people revolting to make it back to a constitutional monarchy?

Is that the general gist?

We could certainly be tied as one of the foreign companies, partnered with one of the elites, at the start of the RP.

Nay. It was an absolute monarchy. Crilalia was autonomous, but their autonomy was violated. They staged a coup d'etat and the nation became a constitutional monarchy.

Sorry, I'm one of those people who like to understand things...I often ask for more in-depth info than is necessary. Ignore me if you wish, otherwise the following...

I now understand why Crilalia was the originating place of unrest being autonomous, then having its autonomy stripped by the monarch. The monarch original intention was to strip power from the corporate elite and alienated Crilalia in the process.

I guess what I am having a hard time understanding is that if the other provinces didnt like Crilalia, how did the unrest there overpower the rest of the nation? Were the provisional governments of the other provinces not supported by their local populations? Did the provisional governments, having a taste of political power, decide to put aside their mutual disdain and join Crilalia to hold onto it? Did they have some kind of tactical/strategic advantage? These are questions that popped in my mind when I read your initial RP. Basically, where was the rest of your nation and what were they doing while this was going on?

Oh and on a side note: A news broadcast RP is a cool way of doing a solo RP, not everything has to be character based. A news broadcast RP would make me feel like a citizen, sitting in my home, watching the events occur in another nation (like myself watching/reading the news on ISIS). I did a solo RP on the creation of my nation in Taijitu that used multiple formats, to spice things up, character insights, news reports, and history text.

Since the Crilalian government deliberately misled the public about the nature of their dissolution, many in other provinces might have seen this as a threat to their own local authority.

Crilalia had it's own military. The national military was busy. They staged a coup d'etat to try to gain national power. Secondly, a military response to the coup was avoided; the King did not want open-armed conflict in the heart of the Capital City. Thirdly, the monarchy wasn't averse to establishing a constitutional monarchy in the first place, so the Crilalian scheme to seize national power was neutralized by the Privy Council agreeing to negotiate a constitution. Their final plan to gain national power was to gain power through the RDP, which they portrayed as a moderate center-left party. The first election was held using Party-list proportional representation, so several moderate leftists joined, and were placed on the list.

This RP is retroactive, so your questions are useful for refining the details of the story -- mainly because I am changing some things from the original story, and I haven't thought of everything.

I'll update the OP with the basic storyline a bit later today.

I would gladly participate in this RP. I'd like to get an opportunity to do some character RP over here.

I'd like to participate too, as I am only doing one RP at the moment, of which I am the OP.

I see that Syrixia would not support just the King or the Crilalians, and would be neutral. It would look to settle the dispute via a diplomatic meeting between the Crilalians and the King, and would try to bid both the Democratic Union and the North Pacific Treaty Organization to monitor the event, the DU via the usual monitoring officials, and the NPTO via a small group of peacekeeping forces.

This RP happened in the past. The NPTO did not exist and the DU did not intervene.

Oh right. I'm an idiot. In that case, then I shall plan to send Syrixian peacekeeping forces. You'll know them by their trademark white uniforms and their ceremonial hats.

There is no military conflict. You can't do that.

They're PEACEKEEPING forces. They exist solely to keep peace between the Crilalians and the King and ensure no civilians are hurt.

Malvad:
I can be the elite if you want. I can also provide an international viewpoint. Could be feeding the flames of the protesters.
I completely forgot to address you. Here's the deal, since the Crilalian government was selling out provincial resources to foreign businesses, it would make sense that any Malvadians profit from this would try to fan the flames of the protestors. We'll have to work out the specifics together.

The head of the Crilalian government is President Abdul Karimi (Yes, the province had a president.) He has several allies in the unicameral House of Assembly. One of the largest complaints against the dissolution of the provincial government is that it was a violation of the Act of Settlement. They'll cite that reason a lot.

You're in. If you have any questions about related domestic issues in Plembobria, just ask.

There were no peace keepers, and no one was hurt.

I'm sure some will come up as the RP progresses. I'll be sure to bring any questions I have up here. Looking forward to it!

I would like to get involved in the politics side of things! Is there a way I can RP as one or more of your House of Assemblymen?

Eh screw it. I have a better idea. How about I'll be a Syrixian who moved into Plembobria and served in the CRA? That a good compromise?

I could also play one of your house-of-commons men or senators or whatever thing.

Bootsie:

Sure. If you want to be one of the bad guys. Or you can be member of the Privy Council. Your choice.
Bustos:
Yes, I am. I would imagine I'll be on the same side as the elites with Malvad.
Then you'd be a member of the House of Assembly

A Syrixian member of the CRA would be good. The House of Commons or Senate did not exist until the Constitution commenced.

I can be a member of the House Committee as a foreigner? Or are u asking me to RP a House Committee member as a Crilalian national?

What I meant was a member of whatever legislature existed then, I'm guessing from your posts it was the House of Assembly.

And also, in that case, I will participate, with your approval, as a Syrixian member of the CRA. Below is a description of him.

Name: Troy Qajo
Ethnicity: Syrixian-American mix, Syrixian on his father's side and American on his mother's.
Personality: Hardy, Strong Fighter, Loyal, Kind.
Background: Came to Plembobria along with his grandparents from both sides of the family and siblings to start a new life after both his parents died in a car accident. He sympathized with the Crilalian cause during the uprisings and joined the Crilalian Resistance Army. When they "pounced on Rethel" as your factbook said, he was there.

Either would be fine.

The House of Assembly was the legislature of Crilalia. There was no national legislature. Your character description is fine. You're in.

In that case...

Name: Lazzaro Nestore De Campo
Nationality: Bustian but became a Crilalian national by marrying a Crilalian woman during his stay. (Doesn't really love his wife, did it to become nationalized and run for political office)
Personality: Scheming, Greedy, Backstabber, Physical Coward
Background: Assigned as local liaison for Georgia Steel and Chemical, Incorporated, to over see mining investments and operations. Originally detested the assignment but successful extraction and sale of resources led to wealth and power. As a nationalized resident, he ran for and "won" his seat in the Crilalian House Committee. He'll happily send others in his stead to fight to protect his wealth and political position.

I totally want to play a bad guy. Or a bad girl, if that is possible. Can you explain a little about what someone in the HoA would be fighting for?

Malvad:
I shall post tomorrow.
Ok. The provincial capital of Crilalia is Dickenson. I forgot to mention that. The House of Assembly meets at the Capitol Complex in Dickenson.
Bootsie:

Power and wealth, and they'd be trying to make sure Luxxar gains control of as many oil fields as possible.

NEVAH! WE WILL NEVAH LET IT DIE!!! FOOOOOOOR NAAAAARNI- er, CRILAAAAAAAAALIAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

Just so things can be easily visualized:

Green - Active
Black - Inactive
Red - Under consideration

Just to clarify Bustos, Bootsie, and Syrixia don't have to post in any particular order. Myroria, of course, can jump in whenever.

(I may seem naggy, but I don't want to end up with another dead RP.) :)

Yeah, I was trying to think how to join in as it currently stands as it centers on oil fields and as my character is a HA member. I have a draft written up but it sorta out of place. Working on blending it in.

I plan on waiting for when the crisis erupts and the CRA forms. That's when I will introduce my character.

Alright um. This seems to have ground to a halt. Bustos and Bootsie, would it help if I posted the setting of a House of Assembly meeting?

Edit: done.

With regards to the President appearing before the Privy Council, he technically is allowed to ignore the summons, but he's allowed to in the the same sense that the RL UK Monarch is allowed to refuse Royal Assent; if she actually did, there might be a constitutional crisis.

I will allow Malvad to decide whether or not the President will accept the summons.
