For the next volume of Stories of The North Pacific, the Executive Staff of the Ministry of Culture has chosen to feature: The Factbook of Narnia. Congratulations to its author, Empire of Narnia!

Empire of Narnia
The Empire of Narnia is a single-party unitary state in North America. It shares a single land border on the south by Mexico. Narnia covers 19,841,976 square kilometers and has an estimated population of 351 million. Narnia is comprised of sixty-two provinces and three territories.

The Empire of Narnia is the largest country in North America. Narnia is ruled by the Christian Theocratic Party. The country is ruled from the capital city of Ottawa, which was formerly the capital of Canada. Narnia is a notably multicultural nation, owing to it's colonial past. The geography and climate are also highly diverse.

History

Narnia was first formed as a nation when Stephen Harper led the mostly peaceful "Christian Revolution" upon assuming office as Prime Minister of Canada. The revolution first led to the establishment of of a Canadian theocracy, but it later spread to the United States. After a brief civil war Canada and the United States of America were merged into one country under the control of Supreme Leader Stephen Harper.

Demographics

People

Narnia has a population of over 351 million. The majority of Narnians are English speaking, but their are large French and Spanish speaking minorities. About 80% of Narnians live in cities, while 20% live in rural communities. The Narnian people are almost unanimously politically conservative following the Great Purge, and the government has declared that Narnia has no homosexuals owing to efficient and reliable brain-scanning technology.

Religion

Narnia is a Christian theocracy. All laws in Narnia must be made in accordance with Christian doctrine. It is illegal to proselytize non-Christian religions and non-Christians are prohibited from holding positions in the Federal government. Those who follow fellow Abrahamic faiths of Judaism and Islam are however protected under Narnian law. Mosques and synagogues are legal to construct and Jewish and Muslims citizens may even serve in the armed forces or provincial government. However any belief that is considered pagan is banned and followers of those prohibited beliefs are widely persecuted. Atheism is also illegal, and punishments are often even more severe than those for pagans. Narnia claims to have 95% of it's citizens follow Christianity, with 3% Muslim and 2% Jewish.

Race

Narnia is a very racially diverse country. The largest ethnic group are European-Narnians who were the first immigrants in the pre-Narnian era. African-Narnians are the second largest ethnic group in Narnia. Asian-Narnians are the third largest ethnic group, and are rapidly growing in number with Narnia's open immigration policies. The Narnian government has made great strides in spreading the ideals of inclusiveness and acceptance. Racism is illegal, and a major social taboo. Hate groups were ruthlessly suppressed by the Narnian government, and racist organizations are now unheard of. The government also has many minorities in positions of power, including the Grand Council of God which is noticeably more diverse than the former American Congress.

Government

Narnia is a federal single-party republic founded upon the tenants of Christianity. The Holy Bible is declared to be the Constitution of the country, which is governed in accordance with Christian tradition. The nation is comprised of three branches that are all under the control of the ruling Christian party.

Executive: The executive branch of government is the Supreme Leader. The Supreme Leader is the Commander-in-Chief of the military. The Supreme Leader has the power to veto bills, propose bills and to appoint members to the Grand Council of God and Supreme Court

Legislative: The legislative branch of the government is the Grand Council of God. It is tasked with making laws in accordance with Christian belief, declaring war and passing treaties. It can even remove the Supreme Leader from power with a supermajority vote. It is tasked with appointing people to the Cabinet and other government offices. The head of the Grand Council of God is the Chairman. The Chairman is appointed by the council with the approval of the Supreme Leader. The Chairman can only be removed by power with a supermajority vote by the Council and approval of the Supreme Leader.

Judiciary: The Supreme Court is the highest court in Narnia. It can veto laws that it has declared to be un-Christian. The Supreme Court, like all Narnian courts rules in accordance with Christian tradition. Supreme Court judges are appointed by the Supreme Leader with approval of the Chairman. It is known for it's harsh punishments and strict enforcement of puritanical Christian laws.

Foreign Relations and Military

After the Christian Revolution the new nation of Narnia was diplomatically isolated. The European Union refused to recognize the theocratic Narnian government, and a government-in-exile took control of the USA's spot on the Security Council. Narnia had a few allies including Cuba, North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Gradually Narnia was able to gain greater international acceptance, and even entered into an alliance with Russia.

Narnia inherited the USA's and Canada's powerful military forces. The President is the Commander-in-Chief who appoints the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The branches of the military are the Holy Narnian Army, Holy Narnian Navy, Holy Narnian Air Force, Holy Narnian Space Force and Holy Revolutionary Guards. Narnia also maintains a National Guard and Coast Guard.

Economy

Narnia has a highly diverse and powerful economy. The economic system is based on the dominance of the state-owned private sector however the private sector also plays an important role. Powerful state-owned corporations were formed from nationalized corporations after the Christian Revolution such as Fazbear Electronics formed from the nationalization of Microsoft and Apple. Narnia is a major economic power and exports goods to many countries around the world. The Narnian government has entered into free trade agreements with several countries and it's economic influence is felt across multiple continents.

The Totalitarian Theocracy's economic policy is nominally Socialist but also has many elements of traditional American Capitalism. Private corporations are allowed to exist next to state-owned corporations and even compete against them. Despite the elements of Capitalism the Empire of Narnia offers it's citizens full government health care, generous pensions, disability benefits and numerous other benefits. State owned corporations are known for their attractive benefits and policies designed to benefit the workers.

The Narnian economic model has faced criticism though. The Narnian government has been criticized for unfair trade practices, including artificial currency devaluation, intellectual property theft, seizure of foreign assets, protectionism, and local favoritism. The nationalization of many large corporations following the Christian Revolution was viewed by some as Narnian Communism. The use of forced prison labour, particularly that of political prisoners is heavily criticized but the Narnian government considers it a critical part of the economy.

Culture

Narnian culture is heavily influenced by puritanical Christianity. Strict limitations of dress and free expression are imposed by the theocratic Christian government. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco are notably prohibited, and pornography has been almost totally eradicated by the religious police. Narnians dress conservatively, in accordance with the dress code as well as long-held cultural norms. Immodest clothing is illegal and heavily taboo in Narnia. In many ways the Narnian government has returned to the Victorian morals that were once common in the USA and the Dominion of Canada.

Music in Narnia is diverse, with pop, rap, R&B, country and rock topping the charts. All music and media in general is distributed by government-owned corporations who block references to anything that would be deemed offensive. The government classifies music as either “casual” meaning it has no important message or meaning and “propaganda” music that is meant to influence the beliefs of the listener.

Film is very popular in Narnia. The government considers it to be the most important medium for motivating the masses. Action and science fiction films are very popular, and nearly all films have pro-government or pro-Christian messages. Movies based off real events such as the Christian Revolution or Narnian space missions are popular and compete with purely fictional works at the box office.

The Narnian government was quick to enforce a uniform architectural style for all government buildings. The style could be best described as Totalitarian Gothic and it was heavily influenced by Stalinist architecture. However many styles of buildings from the democratic era survive such as Neoclassical, Art Deco and Victorian.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure has made a major improvement after the Christian Revolution. The “rust belt” has been rebuilt with largely forced labor by the Narnian government to be a major manufacturing sector. The Narnian government's interest in self-sufficiency has led to a period of massive re-industrialization. Many corporations were nationalized, and the prison system was reformed to allow the de-facto enslavement of convicts. As much as 10% of Narnian goods are made under forced labor.

Transportation

The transportation network is based around automobiles. Narnia has an extensive system of highways. The per-capita vehicle ownership is 800 cars per 1,000 Narnians. As many as 40% of vehicles are large vans, trucks or SUVs. Mass transit networks exist, but are minimally used. Commuting by bicycle or by foot is also very rare, and carries negative social taboos.

The airline industry has been largely nationalized, although some private airlines do exist. Narnian airlines controls about 80% of all Narnian air travel, while privately owned luxury airlines control 20% Space travel is entirely controlled by the Narnian government, and trips of Narnian space stations are becoming increasingly common.

Energy
Following the Christian Revolution the government invested heavily in nuclear power. Aging plants that relied on petroleum and coal were shut down and many new nuclear plants were constructed. Ironically many of these plants were built by imprisoned environmental activists. 50% of power in Narnia comes from nuclear power, including fusion power while the other 50% comes from petroleum, coal and renewable energy sources.
