The McMasterdonian Situation

Malvad

TNPer
Malvad would like to bring to the attention of the Democratic Union the current political crisis in McMasterdonia. The queen has cracked down on civil and political liberties throughout the country. A leading opposition politician was executed and elections are now six months overdue, with parliament currently dissolved. Malvad believes the Democratic Union must make a statement or act. McMasterdonia is a member state and this can not be stood for.

These are not the actions that we would expect from a member of the Democratic Union. It is equally concerning that this is news being released by their government news agency, so it is only reasonable to assume the situation on the ground is far worse. At the very least, the DU should launch an inquiry.

We should also consider, perhaps these measures are well intended. In which case we should be assisting a member state pacify a rebellion. I wonder what the views of the opposition is. Clearly an inquiry is most needed.

The United Federation also agrees with Scandigrad's proposal that an inquiry be launched. We believe that democracy is a fundamental principle of The DU and that the Democratic Union should take action.
However, we believe that The Democratic Union should at least suspend McMasterdonia's membership as a sanction for their undemocratic and dictatorial behaviour.

I saw that an immediate investigation should be conducted as to get the facts of the situation. Once we receive unbiased, factual information from our assets on the ground, then we can made a reasonable and appropriate response. For now though, it should be in the Democratic Union's best interest to restore democracy and provide protection for the civilians and potential targets. Once civilians are out of harm's way, then the host country can provide security and refuge. Until then, it is best for the Democratic Union as a whole to stay out of military action and sanctions. We should make sure that the Democratic Union does not support the current government as enacted by the Queen and make sure that we follow a reasonable procedure if the removal of McMasterdonia is on the table. I am interested to see what the representative from the country has to say.

Honourable Chairman, members of the Democratic Union.

On behalf of the Kingdom, I formally object to the scheduling of a vote without any kind of extended debate. There are many members of the North Pacific Democratic Union are yet to have expressed their opinion on this issue. It is questionable why the Chairman, whose National Government was formerly quite favourable towards HM Government would suddenly pursue such a radical decision without proper consultation. Could it be that the representative from Malvad wishes to bring about the demise of another strong constitutional monarchy in the North Pacific? Where is the Czar and Czarina? Many questions surrounding the recently complete overhaul of Malvadian government remain and the Malvad delegation is deflecting these questions onto the Kingdom of McMasterdonia.

According to Article VII the Democratic Union agrees to the protection of National Sovereignty, and includes the restriction on the Democratic Union's powers to limiting national sovereignty. This very vote, is an insult to McMasterdonian sovereignty. Not only are the charges completely baseless, but the Democratic Union is passing a guilty verdict upon the people of McMasterdonia and it's government without even having the constitutional power to do so. Where exactly does the honourable chairman find the constitutional legitimacy for this type of vote or this type of investigation? The fact that the Chairman would move for a vote without seeking the consultation of the McMasterdonian delegation is equally egregious.

Let us look at the facts:
  • Her Royal Majesty regrettably had to prorogue the Senate for a 6 month period. The Senate had become a beast under the control of foreign and radical powers.
  • The electoral centre was attacked and destroyed which has prevented the elections to occur on schedule
  • The illegitimate and anti-McMasterdonian rebels in the southern capitals have refused to allow the election monitors into their cities, which has further delayed elections. If elections were held now, more than 25% of the nation would be unable to access the vote.
  • The so called "government-paper" is not the legitimate views of our national government. They are owned and operated by friends of the rebel and war criminal Rosemary Whent and should be disregarded as propaganda intended to destablise our nation.

Over the last year, the McMasterdonian economy has continued to grow at frightening levels. Our civil and political rights rankings continue to comply with Democratic Union standards. The Democratic Union has made no attempt to inquire with our national government about this internal situation and has instead chosen to fly blindly into the wind. Her Majesty's government continues to invest strongly in both national and regional infrastructure, including:

  • The building of more than 20 Hospitals across the nation
  • The revitalisation of the McMasterdonian Canal
  • The roll out of the national broadband network, connecting every home in the country to fiber-optic cable internet.

Furthermore, our own Government has been more internationally involved than many nations in this union. Our World Tour, that had to be cut short due to internal matters, allowed the Government to visit multiple nations in a desire to foster international friendship and goodwill. Finally, we have contributed to the standing laws of this body and drafter the Free Trade Agreement and now all members of this union will enjoy the benefits of free trade with other nations.

We completely reject the legitimacy of this vote and we immediately petition the Chairman to cancel the vote for more debate and dialogue to occur.

The Plembobrian Senate -- who has the authority to decide the nation's vote -- has voted for an inquiry and investigation. This is the breakdown of the vote:

For[c]Against[c]13[c]8

-- [c] People's Revolutionary Democratic Party [c] Conservative Alliance [c] Libertarian Party [c] People's Socialist Front [c] For: [c]8[c]0[c]4[c]1[c] Against: [c]0[c]7[c]0[c]2

To the most honorable member state of McMasterdonia,

The Chair would like to clarify some points the member may have missed.
  • This discussion was opened to hear the opinions of other member states. The "vote" is simply an opinion poll. The Chair apologizes if this was misleading in any way. Debate can still take place and the nation of McMasterdonia has every right to defend itself against these accusations.
  • We are not limiting your national sovereignty by discussing what is happening around the region. International events should concern an international organization such as the Democratic Union, especially if it concerns a member state.
  • Your world tour collapsed due to internal issues and none of the nations involved were informed. This may show a great deal of internal stress.
  • McMasterdonian News has a subtitle that states: "Government Approved News From McMasterdonia" and has had articles removed and edited by the government. The news appears to be very government oriented.
  • The legitimacy of the queen and the rebels is very hazy currently. The queen, possibly illegally, interfered with the elected government which led to some believing the were wrongfully disenfranchised, sparking rebellion. There were also no reports of the electoral centre being destroyed.
  • Ratings systems due not always show reality, as proven with many different nations.
  • The Democratic Union's purpose is to promote peace and freedom. That is your constitutional legitimacy.
  • The Malvadian government can view a nation however it wishes. Currently it has a very unfavorable view on a country that would insult its views and history. The last Czar of Malvad, Czar Godric I was killed by Admiral Ronald Vicci, who staged a coup against Malvad's legitimate government in 2013. Vicci was eventually overthrown. The Czar's wife, Amelia, was made Empress and regent with their daughter, Hannah, serving as Czarina. The Czarina and the Empress voluntarily relinquished their power that same year so as to create a full democracy. The Czarina is currently missing after Ronald Vicci once again seized power. Malvad has returned to democracy after the Free Malvad Revolution. We are still searching for the royal family. Your lack of knowledge and sympathy for our history has stunned and insulted Malvad.
This discussion will not be tabled.

Erwin August
Chairman

Malvad:
To the most honorable member state of McMasterdonia,

The Chair would like to clarify some points the member may have missed.
  • This discussion was opened to hear the opinions of other member states. The "vote" is simply an opinion poll. The Chair apologizes if this was misleading in any way. Debate can still take place and the nation of McMasterdonia has every right to defend itself against these accusations.

The chair has implied that this is a vote of the Union. If it is just an opinion poll, will a proper vote be moved by the Chair to ascertain the Democratic Unions collective response to this so called crisis?

[*]We are not limiting your national sovereignty by discussing what is happening around the region. International events should concern an international organization such as the Democratic Union, especially if it concerns a member state.
[*]Your world tour collapsed due to internal issues and none of the nations involved were informed. This may show a great deal of internal stress.

You can also see that many Nations while initially supportive of the tour, were unresponsive when the dates for their visits approached. The internal issues were one reason for the collapse of the tour, which has been acknowledged by HM's government.

[*]McMasterdonian News has a subtitle that states: "Government Approved News From McMasterdonia" and has had articles removed and edited by the government. The news appears to be very government oriented.

That is not a rational argument, with all due respect. If any citizen of Malvad was to produce a national newspaper that was distributed internationally through secure internet services with the subtitle "Official Malvadian news", would the Malvadian government accept that all of the news from that service is the view of the legitimate government? Would Malvad expected other nations to believe everything that is reported in that newspaper.

[*]The legitimacy of the queen and the rebels is very hazy currently. The queen, possibly illegally, interfered with the elected government which led to some believing the were wrongfully disenfranchised, sparking rebellion. There were also no reports of the electoral centre being destroyed.

The legitimacy of the Queen is not in question. I refer you to the McMasterdonian constitution. Specifically, all government power is invested in the Queen, who also retains the right to enact royal decree to overturn the constitution. This power is exercised with great restraint and has not been used for some years. The constitution was enacted by Queen Issabella in 1975. Your insinuation that the Queen is illegitimate is both factually wrong and demonstrates that the Chair has not fully researched the legality of the Queen's positions or actions in the Kingdom.

The electoral centre issue was not widely reported due to its distressing nature. A simple inquiry from the chair would have provided the answer that he seeks. We can provide images and detailed reports of the damage to the building. I will point out that you completely ignored the other issues I have raised on holding elections right now.

Furthermore this is grossly insulting to Her Majesty and her government. That the chair would even remotely entertain the possibility that our rightful monarch and head of state is illegitimate is extremely insulting.

[*]Ratings systems due not always show reality, as proven with many different nations.

I was merely pointing out that the Kingdom is fully compliant with all of the Democratic Unions requirements. If we were to reapply for membership tomorrow, you would be obligated to accept our membership.

[*]The Democratic Union's purpose is to promote peace and freedom. That is your constitutional legitimacy.
That may be the case, however the constitution strictly prohibits laws that damage national sovereignty. It is clear to the Kingdom that the Chair is making an exception to prosecute their biased agenda against the Kingdom.

[*]The Malvadian government can view a nation however it wishes.
Information from Malvad on these so called revolutions has been unclear and sporadic. The disappearence of the Royal Family is certainly questionable, as are the constant coups of a nation who claims to lead the Democratic Union as it's chairman. I present the view that Malvad has become a hardcore republican nation that rejects the notion of constitutional monarchy as a valid form of national democracy. The relations between Malvad and Mcmasterdonia have soured, because the Chairman has failed to communicate with the Kingdom on these internal matters. He has instead chosen to execute a political assassination of her Majesty the Queen and the standing of the Kingdom within the halls of the Democratic Union.

This discussion will not be tabled.
Your authoritarian approach to this debate is noted.

Malvad is most insulted by McMasterdonia's abhorrent lack of respect for our great nation. Malvad has fought great oppression to reach this point. In the past two years Ronald Vicci was responsible for the deaths of over 50,000 people. Their memory has been disrespected by your treatment and response to our royal family and our struggles for freedom.

Now back to business.

As stated under Article VII of the Constitution of the Democratic Union:
Democratic Union Constitution:
Each member state is entitled to keep its sovereignty. The Democratic Union will not enact wide-ranging laws that infringe on national sovereignty without the expressed permission of all member states. All nations within the Union will maintain full control of themselves and the Union.
McMasterdonia has every right under this article to act as an independent entity. It however is not entitled to freedom from international scrutiny. The Democratic Union will not stand for the disgraceful actions of the member state.

The Chair moves that a vote be taken on the suspension of McMasterdonia's membership in the Democratic Union and the launching of an inquiry into the events in McMasterdonia.

Do I have a second?

On the assurance that elections will be held in due course, I, Terrel Formagian, vote to remain supportive of the current regime.

While the Commonwealth supports a move to launch an inquiry into the current events within McMasterdonia, we are appalled by the complete lack of regard by the Chairman. I would like to remind you, Mr. Chairman, that this is a democratic union. I am disgusted at how quickly you are jumping to move on behalf of the entire union without so much as a legitimate debate thread. The choice to suspend a member nation without even the slightest sign of due process is totalitarian in nature, and precisely what we are trying to fight as a Union.

We overwhelmingly object the suspension of McMasterdonia's membership on the grounds that they have promised, and are on track for, elections in January. Furthermore, we object on the grounds that the Chairman is overstepping his bounds. It remains unclear whether this is within legal limits of the current Constitution (our international law lawyers will decide that), but it if it is, be assured that the Commonwealth will be proposing sweeping amendments.

Get your act together, SIR.

To the great nation of McMasterdonia and other concerned members of the Democratic Union,

The Malvadian government profusely apologizes for the words said and actions taken by the Chairman Erwin August. His views do not reflect the views of our government. He has been recalled as our representative to the Democratic Union. He will be replaced by our international ambassador, Ronald Andrews.

As the Chairman has created a great deal of tension within the Union, our government would like to mend the relations tarnished by this crisis. To the nation of McMasterdonia, who we have always held in high esteem, we apologize and deeply regret the actions of the Chair. We will not support the suspension of membership proposed by the Chairman. We do however still request an inquiry, just to make sure that all facts are in order, and to have Democratic Union monitors in McMasterdonia during its election. We consider this a fair and much more relaxed stance.

We again reiterate that Erwin August did not reflect the views of Malvad and has been recalled. We apologize again and thank the members of the Democratic Union for their understanding.

Sincerely,

Alistair Minerva
Chancellor

Abigail Johnson
Minister of Foreign Affairs

The government of the Archipelagian Kingdom of Archegnum believes the current emergency government formed in McMasterdonia is legitimate and is perfectly allowable, due to the referendum on the matter of emergency powers taken within that nation at an earlier date. Archegnum supports the current government, but believes that the McMasterdonian situation should be reviewed around 21st of January 2015, the date democratic elections are scheduled to be held again to form a new government.

Under no circumstances do we support the idea of sanctions, suspension of membership or military intervention in McMasterdonia unless the date stated passes an nothing has improved.

VOTE: Archegnum votes to support the current regime, so long as it remains a temporary measure until a democratic government can be formed.

While there are reports of transgression against elections and the people, I fully trust the government of McMasterdonia to handle all matters within their borders rationally and peacefully. All of the reports are either bias, unclear, or misinformation. I will vote to support the current government until we can get more clear information.
