Today is the anniversary of Prime Minister Harold Holt's disappearance and presumed death.

On this date in 1967, Prime Minister Harold Holt who had only been Prime Minister for 22 months went for a swim at Portsea Beach and never returned. He had been out on his boat with his mistress, some friends and no security. The Government of the day did not launch a full inquiry into his disappearance, which has caused a lot of conspiracy theories to pop up.

That Holt was assassinated by the CIA, that he committed suicide, and that he was a spy for the Chinese and was picked up by a submarine to take him back to China. His family was devastated by his disappearance and disappointed that the government did not investigate the death to the fullest of extents.

During his brief tenure as Prime Minister, Harold Holt oversaw a period of great change. The decimal currency (The Australian Dollar), saw the end of the White Australia Policy and increased Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War "all the way, with LBJ" :P
