With just hours to go before the kick off of the Quad League, the atmosphere around the Petrograd Stadium is getting tenser by the minute. This is the first international tournament many of these fans will have seen, hopes are high, expectations are higher.
Petrograd Strazha open the tournament against Ufflington Athletic. Both teams have a proven track record, but Ufflington probably have the sternest test of the first round. Petrograd have proven near impossible to score against at home this season.
In the other round one match, New Namion take on Moskva Spartak, it what promises to be an explosive display of football. Both teams can virtually score a will, and many are hoping the scoreline reflects that.

Matchday Round 1

Petrograd Strazha 4-2 Ufflington Athletic
New Namion 2-1 Moskva Spartak

PETROGRAD DOMINATE AT HOME, WHILE NEW NAMION EDGE MOSKVA TO VICTORY

Petrograd have stamped their authority on the Quad League with a dazzling first round victory over Ufflington. Despite starting strong, with a goal in the first 5 minutes and going into the second half 2 goals to 1 up, Ufflington succumbed to a devastating second half performance. Petrograd score 3 times in 20 minutes to hold a comfortable 2 goal lead with 30 minutes to play, and then dictated the rest of the game to finish off a compelling display.

In contrast, the nights other match was anything but dazzling. New Namion scored early, but both sides were edgy and lacked the confidence to take control of the match. Moskva equalised in the 71st minute, forcing New Namion to up their game. They were rewarded in an eleventh hour fashion with a goal 4 minutes from time to seal a tense victory.

The close of the game was followed by raucous joy in the streets. Several streetlights had to be replaced, and several store filed for compensation for damages to their facades and merchandise from the club.

We are delighted that her Most Serene Highness has decided to attend, and hopes she enjoyed the first round.

Boxes have been made available at all matches for the Ator People's students. If they would be interested in meeting the players in between matches the Committee is only too happy to arrange. I would hope that some of your youth players may one day be playing in rather than watching an event similar to this.

Sincerely,

Her Most Serene Highness was delighted by the first round, and she has asked me to convey her utmost gratitude to the Committee for providing her and our students box seats at the event.

The students who were able to attend the first round absolutely loved it! I informed the students of your offer to meet the players in between matches and they were very excited by the possibility. I will forward your office their chaperones' contact information so can arrange such an opportunity at the next round.

Matchday Round 2

Moskva Spartak 1-1 Petrograd Strazha
New Namion 2-0 Ufflington Athletic

MOSKVA HELD TO DRAW AT HOME, NEW NAMION BRUSH ASIDE UFFLINGTON

In the first round of national derbys, the Zemnaya Svobodan game locks out in a 1-1 draw. Both teams played a controlled and composed game, neither one breaking in the first half. Moskva took advantage of early momentum to score a beautiful set piece goal from a corner in the 56th minute. Petrograd responded, but continued pressure didn't look as if it would be rewarded, excellent goal keeping and the woodwork denying them repeatedly. It wasn't until the 86th minute, when a late break repaid them for their efforts.

New Namion appeared settled and assured at home, where they easily beat a pedestrian Ufflington. Persistent pressure in the first half saw them scoring in ten minutes before half time, and another early in the second sealed the deal. Questions are beginning to be asked of Ufflington, two defeats, two poor performances.

Petrograd Strazha 6-3 New Namion

GOALFEST IN PETROGRAD SEES HOME TEAM SHINE, UFFLINGTON'S POOR FORTUNE CONTINUES AGAINST MOSKVA

Fans queueing at Petrograd this evening would hardly have believed the spectacle that awaited them. By the time they left, they'd seen nine goals, two teams playing world class attacking football, and a match that will be remembered for years to come. New Namion started the stronger of the two teams, their early blistering pace surprising Petrograd, and earning them 2 goals in the first fifteen minutes. The second goal seemed to solidify the spirit of the home team however; they responded instantly from the restart with one of their own, and then the one way traffic reversed direction. By half time, they scored two more to claim a 3 - 2 lead of their efforts.
The second half started with more of the same, both sides attacking without caution, playing fast, relentless end to end football. New Namion equalised in the 65th minute, but their supporters were silence just three minutes later as Petrograd retook the lead. It wasn't until 5 minutes from time that the result was certain, Petrograd finally pulling two goals clear against a New Namion side with nothing left in the tank to respond with. Petrograd's final goal in injury time was the icing on already sweet cake.

Moskva's victory over Ufflington may well get lost in the media circus surrounding the night's other extraordinary game, but they played with as much attacking flair and a considerably better defence than their Petrograd rivals. Moskva controlled the match from start to finish, scoring early, constantly asking questions of the Ufflington defence, dictating pace throughout the game. Ufflington's defence held as well as it could, but aside from a lucky break that lead to an equaliser before half time, they rarely troubled the Moskva half.
The story repeated itself in the second half, Moskva's control was unshakeable, two more goals ending a misserable night, and continuing a miserable competition for Ufflington.

PETROGRAD REPEAT SIX GOAL FRENZY, NEW NAMION KEEP CHALLENGE ALIVE

The eleven man goal machine that is Petrograd Strazha was back in action tonight, destroying Ufflington in another breathtaking and clinical display. The home teams chances were all but over within half an hour as Petrograd eased into a 3 goal lead, and despite scoring late in the half the players and the fans new it was not a question of if they would win or lose but rather by how many. The action didn't let up, another 3 goals scored in the second, and many are now asking how do you stop this team scoring.
New Namion managed to keep their hopes of league victory alive, albeit in a more subdued fashion with a close victory against Moskva. Both teams had a share of the play in a balanced game that could of gone either way. In the end, a period of sustained pressure lead to New Namion scoring in the 76th minute.

PETROGRAD WITHIN SIGHT OF LEAGUE VICTORY, TEPID DRAW IN NAMYEKNOM

Another day, another dominant performance by Petrograd. In front of a jubilant home crowd they saw off their national rivals to put themselves in an almost unassailable position in the Quad League. Moskva held out as long as they could, but as we have become used to when watching Petrograd the question was when and how rather than if they would score. The when ended up being 5 minutes into the second half, the how being a well timed cross onto a classy volley on the edge of the box. A swift second ended any hope of a Moskva come back. If Petrograd is not being engraved onto the league trophy now, only a fool would bet that it wouldn't be after the final round.
In Namyeknom, a very different match played out. Both teams were ill at ease, failing to capitalise, unwilling to take control of the match. Ufflington finally managed to score late in the second, and in doing so galvanised the New Namion team, who could see any hope of league glory disappearing. They harried the Ufflington goal for the remainder of the match, ultimately scoring in the 86th minute. Theoretically they kept their league chances alive, but those chances which depend on them beating Petrograd by 6 goals or more in the final round are still mighty slim.

PETROGRAD DRAW TO CLAIM VICTORY IN LEAGUE, UFFLINGTON SAVE FACE WITH FIRST WIN

The story of the inaugural Quad League had been written before the final round had even started, and only the most ardent of New Namion fans believed they had a chance of ultimate victory. It was, however, not for lack of effort that they came away with a draw. For the majority of the match they pushed, prodded and probed at the Petrograd defense; defiance giving way to desperation as the minutes ticked away. Half time came and went, Petrograd displaying they have as much skill in defense as attack. Finally, in the 72nd minute New Namion broke to take the lead, and the dreams of a fairy tale comeback seemed to be coming true. Petrograd however showed the real quality of champions, instantly gearing up, pushing back and with in 10 minutes had scored an equaliser. New Namion's tank was dry, they had tried valiantly, but were facing an opponent they had no chance of besting.
Ufflington had to wait barely 5 minutes to take the lead against Moskva. Following their performances recently it was difficult to tell whether the crowd or the players were more surprised. Moskva tried to recover, but Ufflington's solid defence held them for the rest of the match. Ufflington's honour is some what restored with their only win of the league, but an atrocious goal difference still places them firmly at the bottom of the league.

After the final match, it is difficult to argue with the final results. Petrograd dominated through out, not losing a match, almost scoring half of the goals in the entire league. They are the definition of worthy winners, the definition of worthy champions!
