Cloning Research Promises New Breakthrough:
The Issue

Scientists using cloned human embryos for research are on the verge of a medical breakthrough.

The Debate

"It's really very exciting," says lab head Stephanie Frederickson. "Until now, we've kept very quiet, to avoid being targeted by lunatic fringe groups who for some reason think it's wrong to clone human embryos. It's too early to promise anything, but we hope that one day we will have genetic cures for a whole range of debilitating illnesses. I certainly hope the government will support our work."

"Well, if you have to be part of a lunatic fringe group to object to this barbaric practice, I'm a lunatic," says placard-waving protestor Calvin McGuffin. "Of course it would be nice to cure these unnamed diseases, but at what cost? They're messing with the sanctity of human life. It's wrong, and the lab should be shut down immediately."

Wow, this is a really tough one for me. I wish the decision wasn't so black-and-white. I wholeheartedly support the goals of the people creating the clones, and I believe their methods might be the only way to ever cure some of these diseases. But I'm torn because we're talking about people here. I definitely don't support abortion, so who am I to say human embryos may be poked, prodded, injected, and executed?

And with every issue that's brought to me I always consider the slippery-slope concept. If I say yes to cloning for purpose of performing experiments on humans without expressed permission, what's next?

Please discuss. I'm leaning towards Option 2, but when I consider the great loss in the fight against currently incurable diseases, I start leaning closer to the middle.

To be completely and totally honest. I just voted for the repeal of the cloning laws in the WA so I would be totally for Option 2 of your Issue.

I did as well. I considered siding with the WA earlier, pretending my hands were tied and it was never really my choice. If that's copping out, so be it. I don't want to waste too much energy on one measly little issue.
