I know this won't apply to most of you as you rarely visit the Jolt forums, but for those of you that do, you may have noticed [violet] remarking that we will likely be trying to switch to a separate NS forum where we have a bit more control. There may not be a lot of you from TNP, but if you know people in other regions that use Jolt a lot for any threads, give them a poke please. Also... this is fairly quiet at the moment, so keep the discussion off of Jolt please.

The idea is that people save any threads that they want. Whether it's "your" thread or just a piece of history you want preserved (longwinded debates about Francos Spain or Great Bight taking over anyone?). Right now it's a quiet suggestion, not at all official or fully decided on. Old content could possibly be uploaded to a new forum, depends on how it gets setup and if the techie people can work it out.

You can save the threads as web pages using the archive feature on Jolt. If you save the archived page as a webpage or just a text file, you'll at least keep access to it.

I hate archive purges.

There are several old Jolt threads I care a lot about (mainly long-winded roleplays, and the "Christmas stories" that were already in the archive forum). I'll save the ones I can find, but I'd really like a complete archive to be kept available in case I missed one.

For another forum, years ago, I wrote an automated archiving software that stored an entire public backup - but this forum had less than 0.1% of the size of NS, and NS would just not be feasible for my small server.

Hmm. I don't use Jolt, since whenever I go on there I've no idea who anyone is. Thanks for sharing the info though, FEC.

... wow, I forgot that it's not a small server anymore. I get something like a bajillion jiggabytes of diskspace now. :P

The real issue is what forum software would be used if a move takes place, and whether Jolt would cooperate to transfer the NS forums files to the new server(s) should that decision come about.

It's also an issue for NS2, since it appears that the NS2 "alliance" forums are also located on Jolt.

Has anyone raised the issue with "[violet]" directly by e-mail and see what thought he might have?

I know there's a limited number of you that will see it (and a few that already know about it anyways)

So.

Step 1. Login to your main NS nation
Step 2. Go to http://forum.nationstates.net
Step 3. Wander around aimlessly and play. :P

Oh, and Step 4.... Don't mention it on Jolt until we're reasonably sure it'll hold up and Jolt won't cut us off either.
