Election Prelude Heats up the Region
By Omai Gawd

The upcoming election in Kodiak is the greatest and most important in its history. For the first time ever, the President and Prime Minister are to be elected at the same time, along with one of the magistrates.

Neither incumbent is running for re-election, and there is much competition to take over their jobs.

President Rykkland has announced his intention to take a temporary break from NS as he moves IRL to his new home. Thus, the region's beloved founder will not seek re-election to the Presidency.

Prime Minister Staro also will not seek re-election.

Vying for President Rykkland's job are Wopruthien, an old Kodiak warrior who has been foreign minister, military minister and is now deputy defense minister, and South Boston Irishmen, who has been President of Irish Countries, which merged into the Republic some time ago; in the Republic, he has also been a Senator, director of the refugee program, and is now deputy domestic minister.

Vying for Prime Minister Staro's job are Kuja, a fierce debater and legislator, Seathen, a founding member, former Domestic Minister and current Magistrate, and current deputy PM Oliver Graz.

Magistrate Nedinud shall be seeking re-election, though no challengers have emerged so far.

It is not clear if the current Premier of the General Assembly shall run for re-election, but her spot is being challenged by West Dhaka, currently the press secretary for the cabinet.

TKR Sees Refugee Influx
By Apoclipse Nao

TKR's revolutionary refugee program has scored three hits this past week. The Aesonian Empire, Dictators Republic, and a third region whose name has not yet been disclosed have all agreed to join the Kodiak Republic.

Director Old Sacae received high praise from deputy prime minister Oliver Graz, who called Mr. Sacae a hero. The refugee program has for some time laid dormant without a director after founding director South Boston Irishmen took on the post of deputy minister of domestic affairs.

The Work Goes On
By Jon Merriweather

The General Assembly has quietened a mite as the holidays have rolled in, but the Kodiak government has kept rolling.

Vice Chancellor Miclen LaiPang has been actively signing up new ambassadors, and the recruitment of new nations has sparked the highest nation count Kodiak has ever seen. Over 150 nations now reside in the Kodiak Republic, and forum posting topped 50,000 some time ago. December has been Kodiak's strongest month, and the region continues to become yet stronger.

The trend for efficiency and ease of access in TKR's government has continued with some forum work to make it easier to know who is the individual in charge of what, and how to contact them.

Election for Prime Minister Heats Up and Deepens
By Omai Gawd

A week ago, a poll was released that showed deputy Prime Minister Graz far ahead of any opposition for the position of Prime Minister. Two days ago, a poll closed showing Mr. Graz tied with Kuja Seymour, his primary challenger.

Although it is noted that neither poll was truly accurate (the first was held among noncitizens and the second over a holiday and with only a 24 hour time limit) it seems very likely that a shift has occured that has carried Mr. Seymour much closer to his goal than before.

The third candidate, Seathen, has not received much attention due to the bickering between Mr. Graz and Mr. Seymour.

610x.jpg

Magistrate and Prime Minister candidate Seathen gives a speech at a town hall meeting, as Premier Wykked Wyfs awaits the microphone beside PM candidate Kuja Seymour. Premier candidate West Dhaka looks on on the right.

Many issues might have caused this, but the arrival of The Aesonian Empire in TKR, containing many individuals with a passionate hatred of Mr. Graz, and a return of Chairman of the Neo Order and The Mad Hatter in the guise of other accounts, which were banned with some controversy, might have been the biggest among them.

--------------------------------------
ADVERTISEMENT

--------------------------------------

Mr. Order and Mr. Hatter were banned earlier for violations of the COPS treaty, but never received a trial. President Rykkland, who banned them, claims that the COPS violations were not in TKR's jurisdiction to try, and others, Mr. Seymour chief among them, have claimed that a trial must be had.

It was Mr. Graz who re-banned them, and he was under fire both for the action and his supposed reasons. He gave a speech today explaining his reasoning and attacking The True Revolution, calling it "the sinkhole of the world."

Both men have presented their choices for deputy Prime Minister, and things look to get closer before Election Day as a major "conference" is being held offline by enemies of Mr. Graz on Sunday the 27th. Mr. Seymour has declined an invitation to attend, claiming that his campaign will not attack at the personal level.

TAE Makes Itself At Home
By Itsa Culcha

The Aesonian Empire closed for business a while ago, and many of its members have come to TKR and made themselves at home.

Most prominent among the newcomers is King's Hand Jakula, who has become Captain Icycomb of the Royal Guard, a TAE-only military regiment in TKR's militia. King Kavergraith was rumored to be preparing a run for Prime Minister.

TKR Works on a Bill of Rights
By Staesie Rites

TKR's new constitution did not include a bill of rights, so the General Assembly has been working on terms for a new one, which will be much more extensive.

They are also discussing trial procedures and possibly re-instating the Sheriff Act that was repealed a while ago to codify the powers and responsibilities of law enforcement in TKR.

GRAZ ADDRESSES THE REGION
By Wontee Shuddup

Prime Minister-elect Oliver Graz addressed the region after his victory in the polls today, at least attempting to call to the foreground important issues in an inspiring manner. There are mixed opinions as to exactly how well he did. As we, The Republican are of course completely neutral, we have copied his entire speech so you all can decide for yourselves.

800px-Scalia_toplak_harvard.jpg

Prime Minister-elect Oliver Graz (background) looks on as Deputy Domestic Minister Kavergraith (left) shakes hands with Attorney General Struve (right).

Good evening, Kodiaks, ambassadors, and friends. Today the people have spoken, and chosen their new leaders. I am proud and honored to be among those selected to serve this region’s General Assembly!

I pledge to you all several things. First, to keep this address short, as you have better things to do than listen to me. Second, to be open to the suggestions of those who may have wanted someone else in the PM’s chair, and to lead a transparent, accessible government. Third, to continue the hard work of Prime Minister Staro to increase this region’s power, population, and prestige.

I sent out a rather long PM to prospective members of the government, in which I outlined several major goals, notified them of government policies, and, above all, stressing that ministers are semi-independent entities and will, barring special cases, be given more power in the process of government.

This is not in any way a government of one, or even two men. From the beginning I called this remarkable group a team, and a team we shall be. We will begin our ministry with set goals for the immediate future, so we will be going right to work. This is the largest, and yet most efficient, government in the history of the region, and it is packed full if highly capable members who will be doing specific things toward the greater goals of the region. Cabinet meetings will be held in the public eye, and I pledge to post all MSN meeting minutes, unless such an action would put the region in danger. I consider myself a manager, not a dominant member, in this team, because I trust greatly in the competency of the gentlemen who are serving with me in this, the third ministry of Kodiak.

I will be performing a series of minor adjustments to the forum to provide easier and more efficient access to the government which will clean up the Capitol. We will be replacing all old official threads with new ones that will be brought up to date. If all goes according to plan (we are organizing as I speak) we will be starting about fifteen minutes after the GA polls close to approve the government.

Thank you for your attention, and for your support. Now let’s get to work, and make this thing work.

INTERVIEW: GRAZ
By West Dhaka

West Dhaka: Hello Graz
Graz: Hi Dhaka, how are you?

West Dhaka: Good. Now getting to the point you were just elected Prime Minister. What will be new in the new Adminstration

Graz: New? Oh, a lot. You can see the government forum space has been reorganized to make it more efficient. I feel as if the Domestic Ministry has not been receiving enough emphasis, so they will be the focus of the administration's efforts in the next few days.

West Dhaka: I see, and how will this be different from your previous Adminstration?

Graz: My previous administration? I tried a few things last time that didn't work. This time we are a team foremost, and there will be a lot of dynamic things happening.

West Dhaka: I see. As you said alot of emphasis will be placed on Domestic Affairs but what will be changed in the other departments?

Graz: Not a lot. President Wop is taking full command of the military, so that is out of the Government's hands. Progress will continue on the goals of proliferating our message in embassies, increasing our intelligence bank, and getting new ways for TKR people to have fun, on the forum and off.

West Dhaka: I see. Now Wopruthien has chose Kuja as his VP calling it an opportunity to "an oppurtunity to unite and turn over a new leaf and start afresh." What do you think of this development?

Graz: It's his business. I haven't a problem with it.

--------------------------------------
ADVERTISEMENT
MSNBC.png
--------------------------------------

West Dhaka: I see. How will you work with the President and other State Officers of the republic, such as Premier?

Graz: I don't work with them. In all respects, I work separate from them. Of course, we'll all talk about important things when they crop up, but I certainly will leave them alone. I have no business with any of them in terms of management. Really, I work for them more than they work for me.

West Dhaka: I see. Now what is the emphasis you will put on recruiting, as the DA has alot of focus

Graz: Government members are now required to do 50 TGs per week (that includes you :P), and we will be merging the Refugee Program into the Domestic Ministry, as they are just different forms of Immigration.

West Dhaka: What will be the role of Attorney General under your adminstration?

Graz: Just as the legislation says: translate the new Judicial Code that the President has presented to the GA.

West Dhaka: I see

West Dhaka: Well it has been great interviewing you and I, along with everyone else in TKR wishes you the best of luck

Graz: Why, thank you, sir. I hope you can survive working for me :P

New Government Takes Power, Rykkland leaves Office
By Sandy Ears

The next generation of Kodiak has surely begun, as much as people might think that the election of Oliver Graz back to the Prime Ministry says we've elected more of the same. Kodiak will never again be the same place, for an ancient and beloved face has stepped down from his high chair.

Emmerius Rykkland, the revered founder of both Kodiak and the Kodiak Republic, its first Prime Minister and President, declined to run for re-election in the latest election, and stepped down from power.

portrait.jpg

Members of the General Assembly gathered for an unveiling of Rykkland's presidential portrait, depicting him in his youthful glory as Prime Minister of Kodiak. Rykkland himself is at the podium, with Prime Minister Graz (L) and Premier Wyfs ® behind him.

Wopruthien, former Foreign Minister and general of the army, was elected to take Mr. Rykkland's place, although it is commonly assured that he cannot be replaced entirely.

Mr. Graz, former Prime Minister, was elected back to power for one last term - as he himself pledged never to run again. He appointed new blood for the cabinet in the form of Old Sacae, who in turn appointed Kavergraith his deputy, and Sagetism to the new position of Keeper of the Calendar (Kodiak's version of culture minister).

Michael the Great Man, who has been Secretary of State, and Chancellor, was appointed to be Mr. Graz's deputy. "He will be everything to this region," Mr. Graz told reporters. "He will be the vigorous energy of this government."

Former Prime Minister CaffeineLawyer Staro, who Mr. Graz unseated in the elections today, has been appointed Chancellor. Divisional France has kept his job as Defense Minister, but President Wopruthien has taken command of the army and put it under the supervision of Icycomb, the new general.

Letter to the Editor
As we all know, a new government has taken the reins. We've seen the speeches and the campaign drama, we've seen the glamour. However now the reality has set in.

This government will be a striking change. New players have entered the scene and old have left. Some have returned to TKR politics such as Graz. Seymour is Vice President. This will affect TKR, but will it be good or bad. Wopruthien and Graz specifically have a long list of challenges to tackle and questions to answer.

We do not how they will solve them, all we can do is speculate. Both are power players. Wopruthien has a fine record of public service along with Graz.

Graz has assembled a team of power players and Wopruthien has chose Seymour as his VP. Both have their pros and cons. Seymour is a new player for instance and Kav has not been tested. The results we can only wait and see for and hope for the best.

People's Democratic Party Dies
By Thadd Judeus

An announcement by now Ex-Chairman of the Party, South Boston Irishmen was made yesterday in which he said that the Party has suffered from lack of member usage and poor coordination.
He officially declared the Party null and void to his great distress. The short lived party brought promise has it attracted newcomers to Kodiak, but was unable to wheel in any big politicians in the region. A top ranking Kodiak official was quoted saying;
“Political Parties are unnecessary in Kodiak and I am against them completely.”

Former Chairman South Boston Irishmen of the People's Democratic Party takes questions at a press conference where he declared his party disbanded.

Once again, Kodiak finds itself a region of Independents as no parties currently exist in its borders. A Communist party that was formed by West Dhaka was even more short lived.

In related news, today South Boston Irishmen sold off the old Headquarters of the PDP, “The People’s Place”. It has been bought by Ollie Graz for an undisclosed amount.

Electoral Upheaval
By Notta Genn

TKR has, for the first time, seen an elected official unseated. Seathen, a founding member with an erratic activity record, was recently impeached from his position of Magistrate.

Eight different citizens were nominated to succeed him, and four made it on the ballot. When polls closed, these were the results:

Struve 5 26.32%
Dhaka 3 15.79%
Jahka 9 47.37%
Icy 2 10.53%

Jahka was elected, having a plurality, and immediately got to work on a case deciding whether or not a citizen who is a governor can also be an Alderman.

The Big Question
By Omai Gawd

Since the beginning of Kodiak, there have been two super-threads adorning our forum: the Quest to 100 Pages, and Eðeltreow's birthday celebration. However, a new thread is entering competition, and now members are battling it out to see whose thread can reach 2,000 posts first. The Quest to 100 Pages, begun by Rykkland, has a long way to go, but it is still convincingly ahead.

Government Turbulence
By Whozee Thinkyiss

Recently, a huge reform bill passed the GA permitting a consolidation of the governmental literature, a presidential veto, and other important changes. A new legal code was barely passed to accompany it, and an experimental recruitment plan proposed by the Prime Minister was passed.

Attorney General Struve protested the new legal code, and, because of technicalities, declared he would try no cases. Prime Minister Graz promptly sacked him. No replacement has been named.

Domestic Minister Old Sacae resigned to better focus on the refugee program, and the meteoric rise of Sagetism kept its momentum, as she was named the fourth Domestic Minister of Kodiak.

It is rumored that former President Rykkland will be making a spash come-back onto the political scene, and that there may soon be a new vice-chancellor.

Citizens of Kodiak, To Arms!
Join the RP wars and save the Kodiak Republic

The Grand Duke of Alantica, seizes control of Irrendenta, Capital of TLK.

As advertized in the past issues the RP wars in Kodiak are heating up. Things in The Last Kingdom have taken a turn for the worst. With the Grand Duke of Alantica, now the Chancellor of the Exchequer he has effectively seized control of the Kingdom. After being appointed to his position, he murdered King Hadisthe and has threatened all the feudal lords into a single kingdom now. With the throne his, he has set his eyes on the land of Kodiak, empty lands that need claiming. Already he's seized land in the south.

Now as citizens of this Republic will you allow the armies of Alantica to conquer the Kodiak capital of Emmeria or will you rally your allies to make a stand and stop the invading armies?

Take a stand, The invasion has begun.

Common Sense Government
Editorial

Recently, TKR has seen a spike in governmental apparatus and legislation, stemming from a concept that either people's rights are being violated, or that the region's government needs rules to live by.

The rights of the people have been violated in this region's past, and we have taken steps to prevent this in passing a Bill of Rights and a progressive legal code. So long as the tenets of those documents are followed, and the President keeps a weather eye out to make sure all is being done as directed, there should be little need for more system.

Secondly, the government is big enough, and hard enough to be a member of. It needs no more rules, no more regulations, and no more formulae. It needs to exist as it, with less rules, so that it can do its job while its members are allowed to remember that NS is a game. This region was founded to provide a haven for community-minded people. It does not need an all-consuming government to go along with it.

A World Power Representative Election
By Joe Wurzelbacher

Neasmyrnia, Founder of 00000 A World Power, came to The Kodiak Republic weeks age offering us to join an Alliance (AWPA). Met with both heavy criticisms and support, it was ultimately accepted by the Chancellor, Prime Minister, and President. With the support of the Prime Minister, and him agreeing to enter into the alliance, elections began. With two representatives available, a wide range of candidates entered their name into the bid for Representative. The results were rather surprising –
Representative Election Results:
Maester Seymour [ 12 ]    [26.67%]
Silmeria [ 11 ]    [24.44%]
Staro [ 9 ]    [20.00%]
South Boston Irishmen [ 6 ]    [13.33%]
West Dhaka [ 4 ]    [8.89%]
Struve [ 3 ]    [6.67%]

M. Seymour and Silmeria as they watch the election
M. Seymour came in a close first place, with Silmeria narrowly behind him. Staro, the candidate whom was thought to hold the best chance came in third. After the rigorous campaigning Seymour has done, we can only suspect that is how he won. Though, because of Silmeria’s inactivity of late, Staro has been appointed Sitting Delegate until she is ready to take the position, as Graz states:
Graz’s acceptance of the Results:

L to R: Chancellor Staro, M. Seymour, and former President Rykkland at a Press Conference.

Congratulations Maester Seymour and Silmeria, who have won the elections for AWP Rep.

However, as Sil has not been active for a while, I am going to appoint Staro as her temporary replacement for the conference, as he was the #3 vote-getter.

I can do that, as there really didn't have to be elections anyway :P

I should do that, so we can get moving.

Rykkland will be serving in my capacity. He has my blanket confidence, and in AWP, he speaks with my voice and has the power of this office.

Graz (Left) addresses the Region as Wopruthien (Right), the President, stand beside him

I'm just going to tell you all how fantastic it was being your Prime Minister, and how much of an honor it was to be able to serve a second time.

This region has grown up, and in many ways it has improved. We've seen our way through all the potholes and pitfalls you could imagine, and came out roaring.

I am glad to have been a part of that growth, that transition, that experience that is Kodiak.

I am also writing this to thank everyone who helped me, or helped the region, or helped me help the region (God knows I needed all the help I could get). You are all awesome people and deserve a pint of Guinness.

Thirdly, I want to announce my retirement from electoral politics. I do not see myself ever taking up arms to run for election again. This is not out of laziness or ill-will toward anyone, but out of belief that my era in this region is coming to an end, and acceptance that others now must step forward and take up the flag.

Lastly, going into the debates for Prime Minister that are opening up in a few minutes, I would like to ask the region to think about a few specific things when they choose candidates:

1. NS is shrinking, and Kodiak needs to find its place in the new world, or perish
2. Kodiak has the potential to, under the right kind of leader, step out to lead this brave new world
3. Think of potential, and weigh all the options before you choose someone. This election is important as any we've ever had, and it cannot be that we choose for silly reasons.

Forget any sort of partisanship, forget personal politics, and vote for the best possible leader of this region's government.

Who is that person? I cannot say, nor will I.

This region needs a clean election, and I promise right now not to dirty it by endorsement or any other kind of besmirching that could muddy the water.

So: I will miss being Prime Minister, but I know the region needs a new face for a new time. Choose well.

I love this region. I have put an incredible amount of myself into it, and it is hard for me to contemplate leaving its leadership forever, but I must and will.

This is not sad! It is happy, because we're moving forward, not back.

Change, Change, Change
By Donja No

Domestic Minister Sacae resigned long ago, and so has Sagetism. An odd time for both to quit. None the less, Graz hired Jahka, a former Sheriff and Magistrate, to be his Domestic Minister. Icycomb has also been made Minister of Defense due to the recent loss of Divisional France.

Chancellor Staro officially accepted Myspace Man’s resignation, and hired Seymour, yet again, to be his Vice-Chancellor. An odd, but yet fitting move, as this would allow for the Prime Minister and Chancellor know what’s going on in the AWPA and have a direct voice in it.

Godsið Seeing Action
By Eðeltreow

The revolutionary map-based RP game, Godsið, is well underway now with ten players, eight of whom having been active, and four of whom getting particularly involved with it. Currently in turn (week) 6, the nations of Eðeltreow, Chulalongkorn, and the Graz have all expanded their borders by conquering neighboring cities.

Most notably, war has broken out in the East between Chulalongkorn and neighboring Divisional France. Over ten thousand (over 20 units) Cavalry Archers took the city of Tron by storm. The standard defense of five hundred Spearmen didn't stand a chance, and were defeated swiftly, holding back very few attackers before falling.

attack.jpg

the invasion of Tron
In the Southwest, the Graz has aggressively expanded his army and is expected to strike soon. Nobody knows where, however, he intends to expand his country, although it is suspected that he may be in pursuit of nearby Horse resources in the nearby lands of Kuja or Struve, or another unclaimed city nearby.

In the northwest, the other large-armied land of Eðeltreow which was previously expanding, and remains the largest country in the game, is now building up a large number of city improvements, namely barracks. The high costs of these buildings are setting back his economy, but will surely bolster a more effective army in future.

There are, of course, plenty of open cities remaining for many more players to join, so contact Eðeltreow for more information, or check out the Godsið RP forum here!

Government Approval
By Anita Horne

Recently approval polls for the government have been released. Not surprising, everyone besides M. Seymour has a “good” to “average” approval rating. With three “disapprovals”, three “disapprove and I want him removed”, and one “I do not approve and want the Chancellor to resign”, he is the least liked Government Official in the Kodiak Republic. He has been cited in a meeting with Graz saying “Luckily I’m not a popularly elected official. I know what the people think of me, but I also know I’m damn good at my job”.

General Elections heating up
By Bill O’rally

With the General Election close at hand, quite a few speculations have been made at who will run for what positions. With recent exit polling it seems that Prime Minister will have great candidates running: Rykkland, South Boston Irishmen, and Staro are the frontrunners for a Prime Ministerial run. Rykkland and South Boston Irishmen are closer, and we expect a heated election for Prime Minister this month.

Moving on to other positions!

With Mordor’s inactivity, yet again, it seems he won’t be seeking reelection. It seems that Sagetism will run for Sheriff uncontested.

It is highly doubtable that anyone will challenge Nedinud’s seat as Senior Magistrate due to her experience and great devotion to the region.

With the Premier running for Prime Minister, it opens the door for people to run for Premier. The expected candidates are Silmeria, Struve, and Sadore.

World Assembly Delegate seems to be another unchallenged seat, if Chula wishes to hold it. Though, rumors have been spreading that Seymour will run for World Assembly delegate, after all he had a hand in creating the WAD original legislation, and the new piece co-authored by M. Seymour and Authored by The Prime Minister, Graz.

Name-Change Gala

The General Assembly changed the name of the office of Prime Minister to the office of Chancellor, and the office of Chancellor to the office of Minister of Foreign Affairs. This was due to constant griping from former President Rykkland and others who thought the Chancellor position made TKR look silly as it was.

Dead Heat for Chancellor Election

The new election season has not generated a predicted winner for Chancellor yet, unlike usual TKR elections. Four worthy opponents have fought it out and, as polls have returned, are running a dead heat.

Chulalongkorn trouncing Divisional France
the_charge_of_the_mongol_horde.jpg

Countess Chula's ruthless horde drives on.
Last week, a horde of cavalry archers gathered in Chula's capital city of Susa and took over the city of Tron. This week the horde split and seized two more cities: Rapscal and Divisional France's capital city, Alterac. Sir France managed to escape to one of his remaining two cities, honorably untouched by the Chulalongkornian horde.

The Battle of Alterac was an unremarkable battle; the first wave of cavalry archers approached the city, and took some casulties, inflicting almost an equal amount upon the defending spearmen. When the first wave grew tired, however, a second surge swept in and effortlessly wiped out the remainder of the defenders.

Although not the capital city, the Battle of Rapscall was a grander achievement for the Chulalongkornian riders. The first wave of the attack decimated the defending spearmen, wiping out 400 of the 500, losing very few of their own riders. The final holdout of spearmen entrenched themselves and repelled the now-confident attackers, inflicting heavier losses until finally being overwhelmed and falling. The first unit of cavalry archers have been commended for their valour in combat, and upgraded in status from conscripts to regulars.

Speculators expect Countess Chulalongkorn will complete this war in the next week, continuing the branches to the remaining two cities: Valaha and Saxtos.

Graz moves South
Army.jpg

Count Oliver's Grand Armee
Similar to the Battle of Saxtos, Viscount Graz's giant army of swordsmen proved unnecessary as the first wave skillfully defeated the front line of spearmen in the city-state of Liverpool, taking minimal casualties. They, too, have been upgraded to regulars. A fresh group of swordsmen, already regulars, engaged the inner line of spearmen. They took heavier casulties, but defeated the spearmen before reinforcements proved necessary.

The forested county controlled by the city of Baghdad was captured by a contingent of knights sent by Earl Eðeltreow via the city of Lima. The more experienced regular-status knights led the charge, defeating the outer line of spearmen with minor casualties. The rest of the knights pushed the attack against the inner defenses, and slaughtered the defenders therein. Casualties among the knights were minor, and have also been commended for their skill in combat.

ELECTION RESULTS

Chancellor: Wykked Wyfs

Wykked Wyfs, South Boston Irishmen, Michael Somerset, and Staro went into a gritty campaign in which no candidate secured a majority of the vote. Ms. Wyfs and Mr. Irishmen went into a re-vote, and Ms. Wyfs emerged with over 70% of the vote. Mr. Irishmen conceded prematurely.

Results:

South Boston Irishman [ 6 ] [28.57%]
Wykked Wyfs [ 15 ] [71.43%]

Premier: Juken

Juken, Struve, and West Dhaka went out for this office, and each presented heavy platforms. Although Struve is far more experienced, the people chose Juken firmly. The Republican looks forward to the new man's term with interest.

Results:
Juken [ 14 ] [63.64%]
Struve [ 7 ] [31.82%]
West Dhaka [ 1 ] [4.55%]

Magistrate: Nedinud

Nedi stood unopposed.

WAD: Chulalongkorn

Chula stood unopposed.

Sheriff: Commonwealth of Searls

Searls stood unopposed.

Editorial

This region has had the absolute best election season yet. Four fantastic candidates, little to no mud being thrown, respectful and intelligent debate, and a second vote.

However, three offices went uncontested. We hope that this was because of extreme confidence in the seekers of those three offices.

The second vote was marred by controversy, for it came out that SBI is an ardent supporter of the Irish Republican Army. Those who changed their vote because of this fiasco had better have done so because of his outburst, and not because of his politics. RL politics should not transcend the internet border.

TKR Found to be a Geezer

By Gedoph Maigrass

Results of an age poll found Kodiaks to be, in plurality, over twenty years old!

This is not normal, as the general NS population is seen to be around the 14-15 area. This begs the question: are Kodiaks just not getting any IRL, or is Kodiak actually an amazing place to be?

If our Foreign Minister's plight being solved by having 6 or 7 Kodiaks lining up to hug him is any guide, I think you can answer that on your own;)

The formal results:

20+    [ 6 ]    [30.00%]
19  [ 3 ]  [15.00%]
18  [ 3 ]  [15.00%]
17  [ 1 ]  [5.00%]

Kodiak Has a New Government

By Omai Gawd

For the first time in Kodiak's history, neither its government nor State organization contain a founder. The last one of the old geezers to leave office was Oliver Graz, who declined to seek re-election to the office of Chancellor.

New Chancellor Wykked Wyfs has hired Silmeria as her vice-chancellor, creating a new first - the higher-ups of government (Wopruthien, Chulalongkorn, Wykked Wyfs, and Silmeria) are all female, or at least appear to be to Ann Sagetism.

South Boston Irishmen, victim of RL political disagreements in the election, was Wykked's opponent in the revote, and was appointed Domestic Minister.

Otherwise, nothing changed. Staro and Icycomb continue their roles as Foreign and Defense minister, respectively.

Weekly Report from Godsið
By Eðeltreow

Full rankings found here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/The_Kodiak_Repu...0&#entry3096557

Chulalongkorn Takes the Title
In the beginning Eðeltreow was the uncontested leading power in Godsið. His lands were the largest, his technology the most advanced, and his armies the mightiest. This legacy carries through in some degrees, but more titles soon passed to another.

For several turns the Graz has been expanding and has conquered a neighboring country. More on that later. Just as he reaches this crowning achievement, however, he has been surpassed in size and land-based military might by a third...

Chulalongkorn, now titled* Grand Marquess of Susa, conquered Divisional France last week, and continued the expansion of her country to stretch further north and west. This latest string of victories has brought her to a total of 15 cities under her control for a total population of 99 points. In addition to her population title of Landcwena she has also become the richest ruler on the continent. While the Graz's military remains larger and more powerful, hers lags by only 5%, not to mention the significant tactical advantage of the speed of her cavalry archers over the slow (albeit well-armored) swordsmen in Graz's army.

Speculation abounds whether her conquests will continue or if Chula has reached a goal and moment of respite. Certainly, the smaller divisions of her armies are tired and in need of rest, but she has significant manpower to continue. Hopeful analysts note that she has now gained control of enough strategic resources** to supply the whole country, and she will therefore take a respite. Only time can tell.

The Graz, Grand Marquee of Amesbury, Conquers Struve & Staro
What seemed inevitable has happened. After a wholesale invasion of Struve's land, the Graz has split his forces and taken the three remaining cities on the western coast of the continent. Kuja, on the tip of the peninsula, has been isolated from the rest of the continent. Whether Graz intends to exploit that or not is open for debate.

New powers: Viscountess Silmeria of Rosetta and Lord Exederia of Sarcon
Lady Silmeria became Viscountess Silmeria this week with her forces' capturing the city Karama. Unlike Graz and Chula, she did not use overwhelming numbers, although it was the same group which captured Elena (Elf) last week. These two cities have expanded her southern border, drawing her closer to Chula's territory. Tensions are high in the independent city-states in the region, fearing not so much capture by one of them in particular, but fearing becoming a war zone in between them.

Similarly, Lord Exederia has wasted no time in the unifying of his country, expanding further to the neighboring city of Geltor. Troops are being raised in multiple cities, and invasions of neighboring cities are imminent. His nearby neighbor, Chulalongkorn, looms large on the map, but thus far they have enjoyed cordial relations.***

Other Developments
Sir Sacae has formed a country in the cold northeast, based in the city of Oaktown. His land is between Silmeria (to the west) and SBI (to the southeast).

Sir Smurfosity has formed a country directly in between Graz and Chula, based in the city of Madison.

Eðeltreow has seized two more cities: Lyta to the east (formerly of the country Tainara), and Cayro to the west. His treasuries have continued to dwindle under the strain of rigorous building projects, to the point where he is now the poorest leader on the continent below even the newest one: Sacae!

footnotes:
* Players' titles are determined by the city count and total population of their country.
** Strategic resources are Wood, Iron, and Horses, and with over 10 cities, Chula needs (and now has) 2 of each.
*** Lord Exederia was seen to have offered the Grand Marquess a drink in this post.

Kodiak's One-Year Celebration Upcoming!

By Bungee Oao

Kodiak will turn one year old on the fourteenth of April of this year, and the ground is already rumbling. Oliver Graz, manager of Anitome's Tavern, has declared his intention to celebrate the holiday in grand fashion on the premises.

Anitome's gets ready for the party.

No official government plans have been made public for the celebrations, but the latest will be reported.

Interview with the Chancellor

051111_angela_merkel_vmed_widec.jpg

Chancellor Wykked Wyfs was able to sit down with The Republican staff for a short Q&A on what voters have been calling, so far the most successful Chancellery term in the region's history.

The Republican
Good afternoon, Madame Chancellor! It is very good we got to sit down, ja? Alright, so let's get down to business - I know you are busy. I should like to first ask you to evaluate your own performance in this capacity. There were people in the election who questioned your experience.

Chancellor Wyfs:
I'm rather modest and let other people judge me. I am open to constructive criticism. However, so far I feel that because Kodiak itself has been fairly quiet I have worked hard to handle the transitioning period.

Early on in my term, there was a lot of inactivity from other members, thus I delegated work to those capable and active. I find that this boosts my performance.

The Republican
Thank you, Madame Chancellor. I should like now to ask you to rate the performance of your cabinet.

Chancellor Wyfs:
I feel some area are working fantastically and others need a bit more care and nurturing. The majority of my cabinet are very active and this helps greatly, for I get a better run down of what is going on.

I am working on improving the cabinet performance in those areas where I hear less from the ministers. A reshuffle may benefit this, otherwise, the cabinet are fantastic members.

The Republican
Also, I should like to ask what major plans you have in regard to the next half of your term, Madame Chancellor.

Chancellor Wyfs:
I think the way Kodiak is at my moment, we need to get Mordor back! On a more official note, I think focusing on a specific larger plan and lots of little ones would most beneficial.

Currently, a lot of attention goes to the voluntary services. Coming up, I will be introducing a citizen of the month award. I feel this will be big in terms of motivating members to excel in all areas, especially those such as activity and recruitment.

Relationships with the members ans with ambassadors should also be increasing, I have plans in helping them to get to know us a little better.

The Republican
Voters have been referring to this past month as the beginning of the most successful term in Kodiak's history. How do you respond to this, Madame Chancellor?

Chancellor Wyfs:
I respond to this in the same way as the first question. I am a modest person and do not like to think this is greatly to do with myself.

I feel that my cabinet and I along with the state and the general citizens are truly making Kodiak history everyday. Of course, I find it fantastic that we seem to be seeing success, I hoped only to see Kodiak build on and better itself.

That the voters appear to agree that it is is fantastic.

The Republican
Thank you, Madame Chancellor.

Big Trial Scandal, Presidential Apology

By Wadda Dorq

A large case involving a long-standing member of Kodiak accused of being a member of The Enclave ended with the Magistrates dismissing all charges, and a general uproar being heard. Oliver Graz gave an angry speech against the trial's publicness in the General Assembly, though he was in the small minority of people who believed that trials should be private.

homer-doh-square.jpg

President Wopruthien reacts to news that he broke the law on several occasions during the recent treason trial, resulting in the defendant going free of all charges.

The member in question was acquitted of all charges by the Magistrates, and freed from prison that same day. Heavily criticized for how he handled the trial, President Wopruthien issued a formal apology and called a meeting of a special Council on Justice to review the legal process and identify where it was not followed, or where it should be changed.

Changing the Law
By Cameron Pain

The GA has been busy changing more laws. The law has now been changed to fix who is able to obtain administrator powers. The President, Chancellor, and ROOT shall not always have admin.

The security laws have been changed by a proposal by Oliver Graz that was called "fascism" by a certain member of the forum, and represented a huge increase of crisis-time presidential powers. It remains to be seen if this is constitutional or not.

Elections Early?
By Cameron Pain

The electoral process for the next President of Kodiak has already begun, even though the election is more than a month away.

In fact, it began over a month ago when Ann Windsor-Grey, known in TKR as Sagetism, announced her intention to seek the Presidency. Generally considered to have been joking, Ms. Grey has affirmed her seriousness in seeking the position.

Ms. Grey is the former Domestic Minister and Calendar Keeper for the Oliver Graz administration.

art.daschle.gi.jpg

Maester Seymour gave his speech declaring his presidential candidacy in front of a veterans of the War of Independence hospital.

Also declared is former Vice-President Maester Seymour, who has had a long history in TKR politics and seemed highly confident of victory in a grand speech. Although some took the speech very seriously, Oliver Graz nearly landed himself in court for responding disdainfully: "lol earliness."

Unofficially declared is Martin Eðeltreow, the Alderman and former Premier who has been an institution in TKR for a very long time. Mr. Eðeltreow has not formally announced his candidacy, but Mr. Graz has been hard at work creating obnoxious signature images in his support.

Speculation as to whether or not Mr. Graz himself would run were quashed in an interview with President Wopruthien last night, who told The Republican that Mr. Graz would run, but was afraid of actually winning.

A button promised to be marketed in Kodiak should Graz win the election.

Several candidates have also stated their intention to seek office for the midterm offices. Sheriff Commonwealth of Searls appears to be the second-ever Sheriff of Kodiak to last an entire term, something that has made Rykkland happy enough to swear off swearing at Seymour for a month!

TKRM Back in Service!

By Bungee Oao

The Kodiak Republican Militia has been revived under General Icycomb, and has participated in a high-profile victory in Asia.

General Icycomb, who accepted a reform proposal issued by now Major Oliver Graz, has done remarkable work in preparing ranks, structure, and awards for Kodiak's soldiers. He also committed Kodiak's forces to aid New Folsom in the maintenance of their victory in Asia.

soldiers2-med.JPG

General Icycomb briefs the new officer corps.

The new structure has done away with the traditional squads, instead creating three divisions, Marines (updaters), Army (non-updaters) and Reserves (inactive members), and has grown already in comparison to the old body.

Elections Heating Up
(Long Article Warning)

By Notta Genn

The Fifth General Election for Kodiak is swiftly approaching, and also carries with it the third Presidential Election. Elections look as contentious as ever (perhaps more so) but the prospects for the fifth cabinet seem rather inauspicious.

Rykkland, in his manifesto, confessed that almost everyone to whom he offered a cabinet position had declined out of time constraints. The woman he challenges, Chancellor Wykked Wyfs, is rumored to be considering bowing out of elections due to time constraints of her own. It will be interesting to see who will be active in the next term, and who will not.

Another Chancellery candidate is Struve, who, though somewhat controversial, has done good work in the legal area, being a former Premier, Magistrate and Attorney General. He has left the region twice, however, and this has cast small doubt on his reliability.

debates-history_rasm1.jpg

President Wopruthien, left, discusses issues with Alderman Graz, while Alderman Etheltreow takes a moment to direct the camera's attention to himself.

The Presidency is contested strongly by Alderman Etheltreow, though President Wopruthien's term has been considered extremely successful, and he earned a unanimous approval from the General Assembly at mid-term. Although Wopruthien has led a steady resurgence of Kodiak's military and done much to keep the peace at home, often without regard to his own public image, Etheltreow will benefit from being above such issues that Wopruthien had to deal with during his term, and from having, consequently, few enemies.

037JacquiSmith_468x512.jpg

Chancellor Wyfs gives a speech about government policy. Former President Rykkland impatiently awaits a chance to rebut her.

The Premiership, considered the stepping stone to the Chancellery, is always the most contested office. South Boston Irishmen has not confirmed the assumption that he will stand for re-election, though if he does not a winner is not clear.

The election for World Assembly Delegate will likely revolve around the desired role for the position. On paper the WAD is one of the largest jobs in the Republic, responsible for recruiting new forum members and sending mass telegrams, though some view that that should be a function of the Domestic Ministry. Indeed, Minister Juken has been performing these duties along with his Deputy Minister, West Dhaka.

Alderman Graz has recently proposed a constitutional amendment to make the position an irregularly elected office; one would be elected to it until challenged to an election. At the beginning of the region, this was the case, but the second Constitution created it a four-month office. The First Amendment to the Constitution created it a two-month office, which was protested by Eltheltreow as being too short.

_753802_chuck300.jpg

An angry mob was outside the Council of Aldermen to protest Alderman Graz's proposal that the World Assembly Delegate become, in effect, a life office.

General Icycomb has declared his candidacy for WAD, and while incumbent Chulalongkorn has not stated whether or not she will seek a third term, her return is considered to be something to be expected should she do so.

The office of Sheriff looks to be another topic of small controversy, yet again. The Forces of Mordor has once again returned and declared his intention to seek the office. While incumbent Commonwealth of Searls has done nothing wrong in his tenure, the popularity of Mordor among the old guard of the region is expected to be a great danger to Sheriff Searls, should he seek re-election.

Lastly, the office of Magistrate has been contested by Staro, incumbent Foreign Minister. Many were surprised at Staro's announcement, for the Magistrate position has been considered by many a retirement office, since both Rykkland and Nedinud were elected there after holding more political offices. It is unclear as yet whether or not Nedinud will stand for re-election, for there have been rumors of cabinet offers being made to her.

Montgomery-01.jpg

A picture of former Secretary of State Smurfosity from the time in which he was commander of the Kodiak armed forces. It is true; in his day they did not have color photography.

Rumors also have it that Smurfosity, an old-timer who was almost elected to the Council of Aldermen, might re-enter politics, though the role he may pursue is even less clear.

Election Service Announcement

The Republican will be issuing four election issues in close sequence. The first will be a regular issue to be, well, issued on the third or fourth of May, the day of nominations, and will contain opinion polls for likely candidates.

The second will be on the eighth, when nominations close and voting begins.

The third will be on the tenth, after polls have (likely) closed. This will also be a regular issue.

Should one candidate win the Chancellor election outright, the next issue will contain the individual's approved cabinet, and if there needs be a second ballot, it will contain the results of that ballot.

Just a reminder that the Kodiak Republic's Foreign Ministry has a one-month activity policy, and that all regions with an embassy in Kodiak must post an update there at least once per month, or face possible closure.

Kodiak's Republican Militia was part of the invasion force that marched into the West Pacific and aided local citizens in deposing the tyrannical Eli. Major Oliver Graz claimed that it was a privilege to march alongside such honored formations as the New Inquisition's army and the Angels of Unknown.

Kodiak's Rakkeyal-model tanks rolled into the capital of TWP just in time to help force the resignation and flight of Eli's government.

As They Stand

By Bungee Oao

Presidential and general elections are underway; plagued by the expected inactivity of most of the standby members of the region due to end-of-term exams until the middle of June, the pool of candidates has appeared to run dry. An exciting presidential election anticipated, it now seems that Martin Etheltreow will claim the Presidency unchallenged. Former President Rykkland, formerly challenging incumbent Chancellor Wykked Wyfs, is now running unopposed. Both Adam Wopruthien and Wykked Wyfs have bowed out citing RL issues.

The Return of the King

Omai Gawd

After a brief hiatus from NationStates, Charles of the Commonwealth has returned to a region torn asunder. Having gone through several monarchs, Queen Rose Alphanesia proceeded to declare herself Queen of a separate Commonwealth, and Charles returned to install long-time Commonwealth man and eldest son Telthas McMahon as King; Telthas swiftly betrayed Charles and swore allegiance to Rose.

ChaosLordWeb.jpg

Lord Alphanesia leads the forces of the Commonwealth rebels into battle.

The Kodiak General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution in support of Charles and his beleaguered region. The resolution is printed below:

In General Assembly,
Duly Approved on the Second Day of May,
Two Thousand and Nine;
The Citizens of the Most Serene Republic of Kodiak,
Do hereby resolve to endorse the following:

My Fellow NS Residents,

The General Assembly of Kodiak feels the government of Rose to be in the wrong in the recent civil war in the Commonwealth, and that they have committed many errors of both state and ethics that cannot be condoned.

The friendship of Charles and his region having always been consistent and never in doubt, it would be wrong not to reciprocate in this time of need for the Commonwealth.

For these reasons, the Kodiak Republic's General Assembly has refused to acknowledge the puppet government of Rose, and is delivering its full support to the true Commonwealth.

Yours most sincerely, in companionship,
The Most Honorable Adam Wopruthien
His Excellency the President of Kodiak

The Return of the Graz

Oliver Graz, founding member of Kodiak, has announced his intention to resign from the Council of Aldermen, as its last member, and move for its dissolution. He also announced that he will be returning to active politics after the elections.

Nobody yet knows what havoc the return of the "Emperor of Kodiak" will wreak upon the political establishment.

Republican College Resurgent

Omai Gawd

The Republican College has been having meetings to secure ideas for activity for the future. President Graz convened the board of directors for a meeting, and they are still in session trying to improve the college for the good of the region.

It is believed that the college will be working with the Ministry of Culture to create competitions of the more intellectual bent for the citizens to participate in.

Election Fever Takes a Pass

Oh Hai Bob

Usually Kodiak is abuzz around midterm elections, but as the recent emergency election for Magistrate fell within the legal boundaries of the midterm, newly elected Magistrate Santa8 will not be made to stand for re-election, as he was elected less than a week before the start of mid-terms.

That aside, competitions for Premier and Sheriff may yet pick up.

Debate Center Thriving, Thoughts Form

U.R. Rong

Proposed by former Magistrate Jahka and officiated by Chulalongkorn, the Debate Center is proving to be an extremely well-taken point for the improvement of Kodiak culture.

Proving that non-spam posting is actually fun, discussions in government have been going in the direction of trying to limit spam to specific places, though it has been acknowledged that doing this with legislation would be limiting freedom of speech.

Following this, the TKR commons area has been renovated, dividing the old General Discussion forums between two mother forums, Anitome's Tavern (discussion and debate) and Sharpe's Cinema (fiction and RP).

TNI Treaty Presented to the Assembly

Foreign Minister Smurfosity presented the completed Treaty of Wilhemshaven to the General Assembly. The Treaty calls for cooperative work with the New Inquisition, something the Kodiak military has been engaging in for some time.

Opposed by some as curtailing sovereignty, most see it as an extremely positive sign for Kodiak's foreign image, and hope that such things continue.

A note from the President
To our esteemed friends,
I greatly apologise from the lack of communication that has occurred between the Kodiak Republic and the general NS world. Due to various unfortunate circumstances, our foreign affairs sector was allowed to languish in inactivity, cutting our region off from many others. As the current President of The Kodiak Republic, I sincerely hope to reverse the damage that has been done to our inter-regional relations, and to once again strengthen the ties of friendship between our two regions. So I ask that you welcome our new ambassador (which I am certain that you will) and expect to hear from us far more often than you are used to.
Kind Regards,
President Nedinud Guelderlaand von Searls.

Christmas celebrations
Christmas festivities abounded in The Kodiak Republic this year with the forum's skin given a brief new look to match the season. Culture Minister Silmeria, also livened up events with several Christmas-themed word games, as well as a Christmas poll about star and angel as Christmas tree ornaments. 11 Kodiakers took part in the poll which found that 4 (36.36%) preferred an angel while 7 (63.64%) liked a star on top of the Christmas tree.

April Fool Condemnation of Max Barry
machinemanmovie.jpg

NationState’s God, Max Barry

Imperial Britain has started plans for April Fools early this year with the region’s suggestion of co-authoring a condemnation of Max Barry as an April Fool's joke. Our esteemed creator has pulled a prank every year, with most of us remembering the infamous 2008 United Nations non-prank.
So this year we feel that it is our turn to pull a prank on him. The Kodiak Republic has expressed general support for the prank and it also has been proposed in Hampshire. Those interested can find out more on the Imperial Britain forums.

Hampshire foreign relations
Diplomatic relations between The Kodiak Republic and Hampshire have progressed rapidly in recent times with the signing of a Treaty of Alliance, which will be renewed by the signatory regions every three months. The two regions have always been friends, however it is hoped that this treaty will signify the beginning of an even closer friendship.

President Nedinud of TKR and King Fioteria of Hampshire toast to the ongoing friendship of the two regions

These hopes have certainly gotten off to a good start with plans for an inter-regional Supremacy 1914 game between TKR and Hampshire with 12 players in each team. Organised by Culture Minister Silmeria, the game has just started, with players from both regions swiftly claiming their own little sections of the western world. It will certainly be interesting to see which side can work together effectively to gain supremacy.

The Kodiak Republic Government
The Kodiak Republic general elections occurred last month without much fanfare. Long standing member and former President Oliver Graz von Guelderlaand declined to re-run for the Presidency and Nedinud was elected without much opposition. Founder Rykkland also threw in his bid as Chancellor and was safely elected, following in the steps of Wopruthien and Wykked as the second Chancellor-President team to be dating in Real Life.
7124_156499387806_606067806_2882-2.jpg
Despite the Christmas lull, President Nedinud wasted little time in taking hold of the leadership. The Ministry of Immigration reverted back to the Ministry of Domestic Affairs and a brand new Economic Ministry was initiated. The biggest change however, has been to the long dormant military. In answer to the long standing raider-defender stand-off in TKR, President Nedinud paid homage to the Equinox guild system by spliting the military into two separate guilds, one for raiders and one for defenders. Each is under the jurisdiction of the President; however, they otherwise function as two separate militaries, giving both defenders and raiders the opportunity to take part in the Kodiak Military.
Along with all of these new ideas, the leadership of TKR has also been shuffled a little. The current TKR government is as such:
President: Nedinud
Chief Justice: Eðeltreow
Chancellor: Rykkland
Minister of State: Aexnidaral
Minister of Culture: Silmeria
Minister of Domestic Affairs: West Dhaka
Minister of Economics: Seathen
High Marshal of Offence: Devestation
High Marshal of Defence: Wopruthien
WA Delegate: Icycomb
04dec15_swearing_in_gal_f.jpg
It is widely hoped that under this government, The Kodiak Republic will thrive and continue to be the fun and lively place that it is known to be.

I'm not entirely sure, since this is mostly IB's plan.

I presume that we will send a message around to as many regional forums as we can and hope that the NS rumour machine works as well as it usually does. We can't use the NS forum or the site in general, otherwise Max Barry might find out.

ahh, but all the admins share that nation, I believe mostly [violet] runs it (though his christmas card points to him using it too)

Foreign Update 42 – 11th January 2010

Pointless Polls

One of the pointless polls for this month delved into one of humankinds favourite past times, drinking. The regions was asked which was their preferred alcoholic beverage, beer or spirits?
A clear majority of 66.67% people have a liking for beer compared to 33.33% who preferred shots. Culture Minister Silmeria surmised the conversation surrounding the poll in her declaration of the results;

Silmeria:
APPARENTLY, shot glasses are too fast, too furious and the ground is a very very very hard object, sleeping next to a toilet is probably not so great either. Kodiak seems to love their beer mugs, maybe they'd make good birthday presents.. hmm.. also, Rykk is an old guy in the disguise of a fun loving hardcore partying uni student. How was this revealed? Simple, like the British officer in Inglorious Basterds (who used the wrong hand sign for "3" when ordering Scotch, gaspe!), Rykk likes the beer mugs, and doesn't like the shots at all. Tsk tsk. Luckily, there will be no bullets flying around a small tavern here.

beer.jpg

The second question posed to TKR in this month centred around the ocular shenanigans of glasses. So do the people of TKR prefer their glasses framed, frameless or semi-framed?
Bespectacled and non-bespectacled alike declared their preference for full framed glasses which claimed 66% of the vote, whilst semi-framed glasses claimed only 33%. Poor frameless glasses were left entirely without love, with no votes as all.

Silmeria:
Well, I don't have much to say except the fashionable frameless glasses don't win you points in TKR, time for you to use other tricks like dying your beard pink or demonstrating the kamasutra with glasses... or not..

The inter-regional plot to pull an April Fool stunt on Max Barry went down the drain when the January 2010 Update of TKR was published in Equilism. Unbeknownst to TKR officials Max Barry has made a home in the region of Equilism under the pseudonym The Monkye and was pleasantly informed of all April Fools plans upon reading The Kodiak Republic’s January Foreign Update. When informed of the occurrence President Nedinud responded with a “Woops” and decided to think things through a little more carefully for the February Foreign Update.

The Republican back in action!

editor.gif

This fortnight has brought a wave of elation as founding member and former President The Graz announced his intention to resume publication of The Republican.
Some of you may remember The Kodiak Republic’s primary news source The Republican from the period in time when it was used as the official foreign update for the region. The publication has had a long and proud history as TKR’s foremost newspaper since the region’s conception. However several months ago, the paper was forced to stop publication due its chief editor The Graz’s hectic Real Life situation.
Since his announcement The Graz has published two issues of The Republican which have both elicited a great deal of discussion of the various issues that were raised. Among these was a critique of President Nedinud’s current term and a slide in government activity, as well as comments of the possibility of another major governmental overhaul. Whilst opinion in regards to the latter issue is divided, the former elicited a positive discussion on possible ideas for stimulating many stagnant areas of The Kodiak Republic. It is hoped that this revival of TKR’s long dormant fourth estate will provide many active discussion in the future.

Military Moves

The dividing of The Kodiak Republic Military into two separate guilds, whilst not without its problems, has had a relatively successful first month in action. The two guilds, one for raiders and one for defenders, have both seen action in the NS military world.

troops14.jpg

Despite being the smaller of the two guilds - and by smaller I mean absolutely tiny - the Defender guild has been the most active. High Marshal Wopruthien has been doing a stellar job, taking part in no less than five defender activities with other regions. The most notable of which was in Heaven where The Kodiak Republic Defender Guild, along with forces from TITO and the FRA, helped to defend the region against the Crusaders of Chaos - which I'm sure provided a thrilling metaphor for defenders everywhere.
As you can see, it's a good time to be a defender in TKR.

The defenders haven't been the only ones busy in TKR recently. Despite a slow start, the raider's guild has recently kicked into action with High Marshal Avekael organising a raid on Warzone Sandbox. Although several of the guild members were unavailable for the raid, the region was still easily secured and The Kodiak Republic's name displayed proudly in the World Factbook Entry. Sadly, High Marshal Avakael’s recent resignation has put a dampener on TKR’s overall military success this month, however finding a new High Marshal for this guild is a top priority for the government and if one can be found this guild looks as if it could have a very promising future.

Sil is awesome!

av-165.jpg

Long standing culture minister Silmeria Amelie Guelderlaand von Searls

This week The Kodiak Republic's attention was turned towards an outpouring of love for long time member and current culture minister Silmeria. Silmeria is an invaluable member of the region, always about and willing to help she is the most active member of the cabinet as well as just being a generally wonderful person and a true friend.
A poll conducted on the issue concluded unanimously that Sil is a downright awesome person, with 14 votes to 1. (The 1 being Silmeria herself) It was also decided that Silemeria deserves the until now fictitious title of Queen of the world and it is hoped that this category will be included in the upcoming Kodiak Citizen Awards so that Sil can officially be given this title.
We love you Sil. <3

In the month of December Kodiak announced elections as per its constitution, with all Senate seats, the Associate Justice and the Presidency all up for election. However this election yielded the closest results in electoral history in Kodiak, particularly in the Senate. Six seats were up for grabs, contested by eight candidates the results were surprisingly close, with six candidates separated by just a single vote.

The Graz (right) who was made to look red faced as he announced his election to the Senate a full 24 hours before polls were closed and was forced to take part in an run-off vote with Aexnidaral (left)

In fact the only clear election for senate was a mystified Independent by the name of Wopruthien, who had some how won the support of both The Liberal Party and The Modernist Party at the time the only two parties in Kodiak. The run off election between Aexnidaral and The Graz saw a very relieved and grateful The Graz elected into the final senate seat.

The Presidency election also proved to have gripped Kodiaks imagination with a recording breaking 25 citizens casting their vote in favour of the incumbent Rykkland over a raising star and relative newcomer OeilvertMemoria by fifteen votes to ten. Surprisingly though, OeilvertMemoria conceded his election when he was just two votes behind at twelve votes to ten a full 30 hours before polls closed. Critics are wondering what may have happened if he had waited it out.

And finally Silmeria won a resounding victory over the incumbent John Franklin for the Associate Justice position. John Franklin later stated he would concentrate solely on The Kodiak Republic making it his permanent home.

~Political Games~

With the senate now decided, the first act was to elect a Chancellor/Head of Government from within its ranks. The favourite was the Liberal party Leader Slovenion who had the support of fellow members, Riczhang and West Dhaka, though pressure was mounting on Fancy Hats from the Modernist party and The Graz, independent, to support Wopruthien. Eventually it was decided that Slovenion would take the position of Chancellor with the two independents on his cabinet.

~Governing Party Splits~

biden_narrowweb__300x474,0.jpg

Chancellor Slovenion speaks to the region after returning to a new political atmosphere.

After the Chancellor returned from an unexpected leave of absence, due to an ailment, he was surprised to find an enormous change in Kodiak Politics. While away, the Liberal Party of Kodiak(his governing party) split into two. The entire governing membership of the party left the KLP(a right wing organisation) to create the Democratic Party; a left wing organisation. After much discussion, the Chancellor and KDP(Democrats) came to terms and recognized the new situation.

Even though the KLP and KDP are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, the KDP has pledged continued support for the Chancellor and KLP. Though the Chancellor likes the idea, as KLP Leader he cannot agree to forming a vital coalition with them. As is expected, the feeling isn't mutual in KLP Headquarters, whose members now wish to make a coalition with the TKM(Modernists).

Election time isn't until the end of the month. The Modernists are setting up for the coalition terms and agreements. And Chancellor Slovenion is caught in the middle while deciding whether to make a bid for a second consecutive term as Chancellor... or to continue on in the Senate as a former Chancellor. With the new three party system, a coalition will have to be made in order to retain a majority. One cannot predict the outcome of forming a new government, or maintaining the current government in the next parliament.

~Minimum Wage for Kodiak?~

ist2_5677818-british-pounds.jpg

The current Minimum Wage Bill has been up for debate in the Senate since October of last year.

Kodiak has been discussing the possibility of having a minimum wage for the citizens of the region since the first opening of parliament last year. Although a bill over the matter has been widely accepted and passed, but a series of amendments in both houses prevent it from final passage.

Both houses seem to agree that it is necessary. Yet there has been no final compromise on the tier system or payments that should be imposed. The Senate is currently making little effort to pass the bill and tabling the bill has been denied.

At the current rate of motion, the bill may never pass. But as patience wears away, legislators may decide very soon that getting exactly what they want isn't an option. Just don't hold your breathe for it -what is one of the longest debated bills in Kodiak- to be passed anytime soon.

The_View_logo.jpg
With Nedinud von Guelderlaand

Most members of The Kodiak Republic were expecting a quiet Christmas, as many citizens took time off to visit their families and celebrate the festive season. However this December has been anything but peaceful, as political debate and intrigue swept through the region. The December elections, more than any in the past, were marked with strong partisanship in both parties; The Kodiak Modernists (TKM) and The Kodiak Liberal Party (KLP). The election resulted in a hung parliament and so partisan politics continued to permeate the region through the first few weeks of December, in both the Senate and the Courts.

Several judicial questions (brought by myself) sparked outrage in the KLP as it seems they were taken as a partisan challenge, resulting in kind with a string of judicial queries and cases against TKM members. These “attacks” elicited strong reactions from both sides and once again the region was embroiled in partisan battle. As Associate Justice Silmeria was absent at the time and the position of Chief Justice was yet to be filled, these judicial problems could not be resolved. When President Rykkland - in an attempt to resolve our judicial quandary - appointed John Franklin to the position of Chief Justice it only sparked further outrage. Due to personal reasons (which are now fully understood and accepted by the region) Rykkland overlooked the fact that the Chief Justice must be approved by both Houses before he can be instated. Understandably, this caused anger and the belief that President Rykkland had become dictatorial and anti-democratic. The KLP was also under the belief that the appointment was purely partisan and designed to give TKM control of the Court. In response the KLP launched several judicial assaults against President Rykkland. However with no Justices to preside, the cases just sat and festered.

It was just after this time (21st-23rd December) that four KLP members, OeilvertMemoria, Aexnidaral, Senator West Dhaka and Seantor Riczhang, decided to split from their former party and create a new one called the Kodiak Democratic Party. This was in reaction to the increased partisanship and the party would run under the banner of “no labels” as an anti-partisan party. Chancellor Slovenion (leader of the KLP) was away for medical reasons at this time and so was not informed about the decision, as these members made up a bulk of his party and gave him the necessary support in the Senate, he would understandably be very upset when he returned after Christmas. Though in my view, he eventually responded very gracefully to such an upsetting turn of events, and as a result the government formed in early December has remained.

The new KDP was at first glance, no different to the KLP, in that they still pursued strict opposition to the appointment of John Franklin. Debate and argument surrounding this issue continued as the approval of John Franklin first passed the General Assembly (with a supermajority) and then got stuck in the Senate due to opposition. It was only after an intense set of PMs between OeilvertMemoria and myself that the KDP finally agreed to support the appointment, and within minutes it had passed through the Senate. For a party claiming to be anti-partisan this strong level of partisanship that the KDP displayed in this issue surprised me. However I do believe that the advent of a third party is crucial to our success and to the prevention of future division. It should encourage cooperation between parties and a willingness to vote for candidates other than your own. This is what I am hoping will be the result of such a tumultuous time in Kodiak’s history.

Recent Cultural Activities

rooftop_small1.jpg

Kodiak's Official Logo for its annual Christmas festivities.

This year, Culture Minister Dhaka prepared the wonderful Christmas celebration. Kodiak had a Christmas Feast that was truly symbolic to the love of community in the region. The Culture Ministry had the region decorated, and incorporated Christmas into all of Kodiak's fun activities. Those activities are the usual, continued, and always fresh ones used since Minister Nedinud was in office. We have a "Caption This! Contest", "Pointless Polls", and various others.

People's Choice Awards

The Cultural minister West Dhaka announced a Kodiak Awards, with results expected shortly, Kodiakers are keen to discover the answer to some of the most pressing questions within the region, such as who really is the Most Drunken member and who really is a pioneer of the way of the Yeeclack a near Kodiak religion in the way of randomness and spam.

That's an amazingly close election. Strange to see so many players in the running.

Thank you for the excellent update. These things have come so far from when I started doing them for TNP 7 something years ago.

Thank you.

And it was indeed close, I have no idea how it became so close, but all the elections this term were close, looking forward to the next one now.

During the new session of the General Assembly for Kodiak, Gideon Carter, Incumbent Speaker is re-elected for a second term with both South Boston Irishmen and West Dhaka competing for the top job of representing the people on only 4 votes to Gideon's 6. Congratulations. Here's to another prosperous term!

New President! NO, just a President Pro Tempore selected!

New President Pro Tempore John Franklin poses for picture to go into new picture frame.

Newly into the current session of the Senate, Rykkland was seen nominating John Franklin and seconded by Nedinud to become President Pro Tempore in the absence of the Incumbent President, Oliver Van Guelderlaand. "I am appreciative and grateful for both the nomination and second from the old guard(s) of Kodiak to do a job and duty to and for the people." (It was put to the test when the President was absent for a brief period of time due to a virus and was successful.)

Can you spot them?

Recently without prior notice or sign, Rykkland and Nedinud, both important people for the functionality of the region disappeared without warning. So we called up the local detective to go on the search. Here is what he found:

footprints.jpg

The trail led to a beach house where the couple was filmed having fun, laughing and forgetting their duties of what they get paid for.

It wasn't till the next day a phone call was received from Rykkland responding to various messages left on his answering machine. I sadly for the benefit of having your children remaining sane and healthy cannot repeat these messages, but I can say, they had more bleeps in them then Jerry Springer. We take no responsibility for the hiring of this detective nor liability for the damage he may have caused. All identities included in the search will remain anonymous.

Seymour, head of News Corp international, had his newspaper print the following story:

Senators face Recall

WisconsinRecall.jpg

Citizens stand in front of the Capitol demanding recalls.

During the last two weeks the Senate was dominated by only 3 to 4 members voting at all. With many bills passing by a unanimous 3-to-nothing majority, the citizens were fed up with the inactivity. Using the recall laws already in place, citizens in the General Assembly proposed to recall Nedinud and Rykkland. Rykkland, whom was Chancellor at the incoming of Parliament, was overthrown and replaced by Sniper Wolv mere days before being ousted from the Senate.

The only three people that have announced their candidacy for election are South Boston Irishmen, West Dhaka, and Slovenion.

July 10th announces one candidate, that being Slovenion is declared out of the 3 so far to have secured a place in the Senate. We await the run-off between South Boston Irishmen and West Dhaka.

An old dog, but this one you can teach new tricks!

old-dogs-new-tricks.jpeg

Sighted in Kodiak for the first time in absolute ages, Mr Tweedy, the graphics specialist and expert decided to drop by for a little visit. The saying goes folks: "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" but I now certainly disagree. This old dog came back! Lassy came home! :D

Are you up for it? Being President that is? This is the question!

Both Associate Justice Crist Seymour & President Pro Tempore John Franklin are announcing candidacy for the upcoming Presidential elections on August 1st. From a prospective, I view Seymour as a highly intelligent and very capable person for the job and I view myself without my opponents use of age and inexperience (yes a Ronald Reagan quote folks) do find myself worthy of a Presidential term as provided by the dedication shown here and in the Senate for the benefit and purpose of the region. I wish Seymour luck, although I hear stories that he is not actually running publicly but behind a campaign manager this time. I ask in the name of JFK: "Ask not what your Country/Region can do for you - Ask what you can do for your Country/Region!".

NEWS JUST IN: Gideon Carter has just at this moment given his name to be put forth into the ballot for the running of the Presidency. We wish him also, well wishes and a good luck.

Again, Seymour had his newspapers print the following:

Presidential Election Season kicks off

26blog-crist2.jpg

Justice Crist Seymour ( L ) speaks with Senator John Franklin ( R ) at a rally, both of whom have announced their Presidential intentions.

In less than a month, Kodiak will have its Presidential election; and this will be a notable one. The first Presidential election in which the main candidates will not be members of the "Old Guard" of Kodiak, nor have served as President in the past. It has been rumored that while both men will campaign, they've made a campaign pledge to one another to have no mud throwing, or campaign antics that would hurt either of the two. Justice Seymour is quoted as saying "I want a good campaign. This is the first election we have had for President where both candidates give you very similar experiences in public service.".

Senator Franklin is running with the Liberal Party's endorsement (the ideological conservatives), whereas Justice Seymour is running with No Party Affiliation. When asked about his affiliation Justice Seymour gives a different response "Don't confuse it, I'm not independent. I have No Party Affiliation. I have a political philosophy, and typically it's left leaning."

Elections and Renewal of Government
Soon after the reformation of the government was made, Rob set up an interim government until elections can be held under our new Constitution.

The new Constitution, streamlined from the old but still keeping the same Kodiak values, was ratified unanimously.

Elections were soon held for President, Justiciar (the Attorney General), and the Speaker of the all-citizen General Assembly.

Kodiakers go to the polls to vote in the elections

By a landslide, The Graz defeated Nivogal 11-2 for Justiciar. However, in two close votes, South Boston Irishmen defeated Rob 8-7 to become the Sixth President of The Kodiak Republic, while Silmeria narrowly defeated Nivogal 7-6 for Speaker of the General Assembly.

Pledging to help bring unity and active government, SBI set to work immediate assembling a team.

SBI's first cabinet meets to brainstorm and plan for the weeks ahead

The new government was made up of the following:

President: South Boston Irishmen
Minister of Home Affairs: Rob
Minister of Foreign Affairs: Crist Seymour
Minister of Culture: Leonardo Romefeller
Justiciar: The Graz
Speaker of the General Assembly: Silmeria
Chief Magistrate: Lady Jane Grey

Unfortunately, in the weeks ahead, there were setbacks as some ministers went inactive.

In keeping with his promise though, SBI sought to correct this matter and immediately took action. Crist Seymour was removed as Foreign Minister and Nivogal was appointed instead, and currently discussions are under way in the General Assembly to replace the Chief Magistrate Lady Jane Grey, who has become inactive due to RL matters.

Additionally, The Graz has unexpectedly announced his departure from the position of Justiciar as well as the entire region. No one really knows why, and no explanation has been given at the time of this post.

Legislative Activity Under Way
The General Assembly has already begun discussing proposals for laws and a treaty.

Discussions are underway on a proposed General Agreement for Multi-cultural Exchange (GAME) Treaty that was made between the governments of The Kodiak Republic, The Respected Realms, the Alliance of Queens, and the Kingdom of Denmark. While some support the treaty, believing it will generate more activity and cross-regional cultural activities, some feel opposed with the regions involved, namely with the fact that the primary members of the other three regions are essentially the same members of the monarchal Grey family. A vote is expected to occur soon.

Proposals have already been under discussion for ways to improve the current laws. Bills to improve the citizenship process, admin selection process, and how the cabinet is organised and formed are being discussed currently.

Social News
Rykkland and Nedinud have recently announced, that while they are brother and sister in NS, in RL they have officially become engaged. No further details have been given on when they plan to tie the knot, but we here at the Kodiak Foreign Ministry, as well as everyone in The Kodiak Republic, wish to send our heartfelt congratulations and blessings.

As usual, our region continues to shine in other local social activities in what is our expert speciality: SPAM! The spam threads continue to be active, and regardless of the type of government our region may be having, our need to spam will never die.

That's all for now, and we encourage new people to come stop by and say hi to us if you'd like :)
