NS2! Beta Version Released!

See the link below. The game is being tested by a group of "beta" players. You cannot register without a beta key however the names of various nations, continents, and worlds are all active links - you can move around and bowse etc.

This is very interesting! Nation pages show a lot of additional economic information. There are various worlds, continents, and alliances. The alliances seem to function like a mini-WA. They write their own laws etc. Looks like the alliances and continents are taking the place of regions.

See the bottom of the pages for links to the various NS2 forums, a NS2 Web blog etc. This is a link straight to the blob: http://blog.nationstates2.com/

I have taken a look-around and, like Sydia, I am not that impressed at the moment. Maybe I will get a bit more enthusiastic when warfare etc are included

Right then.

This is the screen I see when I login:

National happenings are the results of your decisions on issues.

This is the screen that I think you can see without logging in, right?

The first part is fairly standard, the second para lists your resources (mine being Horses, Camels, Concrete and Oil). The third is related to nations "needs" -this I don't really get as it seems to be to be pretty much completely out of your hands (its not like I could change it so that my nation doesn't bother spending money on saying "entertainment" or something). Yesterday my income vs. international prices meant that I was short of somethings but, again, you can't prioritise anything and, anyway, it doesn't seem to make much difference.

This is the top of the economy page. You can see the "needs" thing there.

Obviously don't know how war/espionage will work yet. Personally the one thing I really don't like is the division up into "worlds". To me so far NS2 sits uncomfortably between NS1 and CN. It's lost the game mechanics which provided for the meta-politics of NS1, though I guess it depends on how war is implemented.

Do these alliances or worlds have a message board where nations can converse publically with one another? Where are new nations born in NS2?

Ooh, I surprisingly got an invitation too...but I'm a bit too confused of these first 5 minutes I had a look at it to explore more. And lacking time.
But it doesn't look that bad to me. :)

With the war going on in CN right now, NS2 is going to face some stiff competition!
Actually it's great for NS2 because all the losers are going to be looking for a new game to play, and they're gearing up for NS2. Also, I will, umm, reserve judgment until I can get in myself.

So now you lot have had over a month at NS2 what are your opinions now and has it improved as they have worked on it?

Well, they've done a good job fixing the errors and problems that popped up, though new ones still pop up.

I see a lot of potential in this game. It hasn't really caught fire yet though. I think they really need to enable war. I'm hoping that will give it the spark that it currently lacks.
