Government officials should always be accountable to the people. The way we hold officials accountable is with our vote.
 
Fixed, though of course with the option to boot someone out of office and hold an extraordinary election if necessary.
 
Run offs are a silly waste of time. I think it would be far wiser to either employ Instant Runoff Voting, or better yet, the Condorcet method for elections. But getting off topic with that comment.
