How many planets in the Solar system

balls to the boffins....according to experts a strawberry isn't a fruit....seeds on the outside.....so what do they know.....
I'm pretty sure if Pluto came rushing towards the earth in some hypothetical doomsday scenario they'd call it a planet....

Not really fair. Some get to enjoy millennia of planethood, and Pluto didn't even make a century. Poor guy. :bye:
 
It is interesting none the less as to what they think. Scientists never can make up their minds as to what something is or is not.

Pluto will always be a planet to me. :tb2:

I think the scientists are in cahoots with the textbook publishers who now get to sell millions of copies of the latest revised edition, with the "correct" scientific facts.
 
My question is - Why the heck does it matter? A rock in space is a rock in space, pretty much no matter what you call it.

We have to have a solid foundation to go from. This convention or meeting cleared up definitions of heavenly bodies, which will make it easier to classify new bodies when we find them.
