Help Prevent Ozone Depletion

A resolution to increase the quality of the world's environment, at the expense of industry.

Category: Environmental

Industry Affected: All Businesses

Proposed by: The Black Market HQ

Description: For too long humans have been emitting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which effect the ozone that protects us. Most of CFCs come from the industry. If CFCs continue to be emitted we will not have enough ozone to protect us.

Ozone protects us, it prevents the majority of UV(Ultra-Violet) rays from reaching our surface. Too many UV rays and you get skin cancer.

The Ozone is depleted so much over the south pole and the north pole that almost 100% of UV rays reach the surface.

If we don't stop emitting CFCs the 'hole'(area of significantly depleted ozone) will continue to grow until it covers the entire earth.

Therefore all businesses must reduce emitions of CFCs by 50% within five years and 90% within thirty years. It is still possible for businesses to work effectively even though they have to reduce the amount of gas they release.

If there is a reduction in CFCs, the ozone will stop depleting, there will be a significant reduction in skin cancer and therefore a reduction in medical costs. It will also help endangered animals as animals suffer from the same problem.

Basically by reducing CFC emitions we make the world a better place.

This resolution is currently up for vote in the UN.

Please post your views and stance on this resolution below. Note, however, that you must have a UN nation in The North Pacific, or on active NPA duty, in order for the Delegate to count your vote.

CFC emissions are illegal within the borders of C'thul Murgos. We find this resolution absolutely pointless to us, but of benefit to the remainder of the world.

FOR.

UN nation: Luteinizing Hormone

A terribly written proposal with absolutely no regard for smaller, poorer, industrializing countries. Nor does it provide for the sharing of technologies that would allow this reduction worldwide.

A very firm NAY from me.

Ah, a nostalgic throwback to the good old days of the UN, when resolutions rambled on like middle school essays and had more factual and logic errors than you could shake a stick at. Unfortunately, while this is appealing when used for telephones and toasters, such a retro approach is all too often extremely damaging when seen in international law.

As pointed out in the first post of the discussion thread for the resolution, this ban on CFCs does not go nearly far enough in actually protecting the ozone layer, and if passed could act as a block against a more comprehensive ban. Shame that this resolution had to make it to vote before people realized it.

So, against.

It's an awful proposal. Judging it on its form may seem petty, but if it is voted through, it will be right up there in the list for all time, even if it gets repealed later. There are already too many proposals that read "omg we must al make 100000 nooks to blo up teh terorist!!!" (or similar things for other viewpoints). This is on a slightly higher level, but it is still atrociously written.

I never thought I'd be voting against an environmental resolution, but here's my NAY.

Just wanted to poke this thread because the vote is so close. I'll probably vote Thursday evening.

For anyone who's interested, if there's a tie I will vote Nay, as I believe this resolution is poorly written and displays a lack of knowledge of the science involved in the chemistry of the upper-atmosphere.

I'll also point out that thirty years is really a great deal more time than is necessary. Really, despite the general moanings of the UN forum members, the materials responsible that would be banned are not particularly critical to industry, and can be phased out completely much faster than the leisurly rate set by the resolution at hand. Considering the atmospheric lifetime of the responsible compounds, a better resolution with a shorter elimination timetable is advisable.

Daimiaena's Scientific experts have already disproven the whole Global warming myth....

There is no acceptably proven connection between CFCs and the thinning of the ozone....

The hole in the Ozone layer at the poles is in fact a natural phenomena that has always existed and has only just been discovered....

Like many natural phenomena it fluctuates in size....

Our scientific experts predict that it will shrink again in the near future....

Therefore Daimiaena votes Nay.....

With at total vote of 9 for and 12 against, I have voted AGAINST the resolution.

The resolution "Help Prevent Ozone Depletion" was passed by the UN overall 9,028 votes to 6,191.

Voting on this resolution has ended.

Thanks to those nations who cast their votes. Your participation is a great help to the region.
