Geography Quiz!

They say Americans suck at geography. Well I'd like to test that. I was recently asking geography questions on IRC and found that most people could not answer them unfortunately. So I've prepared these ten questions, and whoever can get all ten right wins a cookie. NO USING A MAP! ARGH! I'll tell you how many you got right after you've answered them all:

1.) What is the only borough of New York that is on the mainland of the United States?

2.) What state extends farthest North? Maine, Minnisota, Washington, or Michigan?

3.) What state has the highest population density? New York, Maryland, Delaware, or California?

4.) What city has the largest population within the city limits? Denver, San Antonio, Dallas, San Jose, or San Francisco?

5.) What city has the higher elevation? Atlanta or Fairbanks (Alaska)?

6.) Which has more counties? New York City or Delaware?

7.) Which state has recorded the coldest temperature? Utah, North Dakota, Minnisota, Colorado, or New Hampshire?

8.) What is the Northernmost metropolitan area of one million plus in North America?

9.) New York State contains parts of what two Great Lakes?

10.) Browning, Montana holds the world record for largest 24 hour temperature change. The temperature plummeted from about 40 above zero to about how many degrees below zero? 40, 50, 60, or 70 below zero?

1.) Brooklyn

2.) Michigan

3.) California

4.) San Francisco but I’m also tempted to say Dallas. There’s no set rule on how a city defines its limits.

5.) Atlanta

6.) Is this a trick question? I’ll say it’s the same.

7.) Minnesota

8.) Toronto

9.) Erie and Ontario

10.) 60 below

2/10, but you were very close to several answers.

I'll give hints:

1.) Why do they call it the World Series when they always play it in ___ _____? :P
2.) IIRC this state extends farther north than the others simply because of a mistake in surveying.
3.) This state also contains a large portion of the fourth largest metropolitan area in America.
4.) Its population is only slightly (several thousand according to the Census) higher than Dallas. It's not San Francisco; SF is surprisingly small.
5.) Well you both guessed Atlanta, and that's correct. I thought that question was one of the most difficult/surprising, but guess not :P
6.) Each borough of New York is its own county.
7.) Rogers Pass, Montana has the record for the coldest temperature in the lower 48 at -70. A recording of -69 occured in an area that is equally mountainous.
8.) Think oil!
9.) Erie and Ontario are correct...
10.) Yeah this is by far the most random question... but the correct answer has been stated once.

1.) What is the only borough of New York that is on the mainland of the United States?
(Doing this first w/o the hints)

Never been to NYC. Queens?
2.) What state extends farthest North?  Maine, Minnisota, Washington, or Michigan?
I believe it looks like Maine on most maps due to the projections, but it's actually Washington.
3.) What state has the highest population density?  New York, Maryland, Delaware, or California?
Hm. New York and California have high populations, but they're large states with a lot of wilderness. Between MD and DE, I'll probably say Maryland.
4.) What city has the largest population within the city limits?  Denver, San Antonio, Dallas, San Jose, or San Francisco?
Dallas?
5.) What city has the higher elevation?  Atlanta or Fairbanks (Alaska)?
Atlanta, GA.
6.) Which has more counties?  New York City or Delaware?
Heh. Since you're asking, probably NYC,
7.) Which state has recorded the coldest temperature?  Utah, North Dakota, Minnisota, Colorado, or New Hampshire?
Colorado. More mountains.
8.) What is the Northernmost metropolitan area of one million plus in North America?
:pinch: Drawing a blank. Be willing to bet it's in Canada, though.
9.) New York State contains parts of what two Great Lakes?
Erie and Ontario.
10.) Browning, Montana holds the world record for largest 24 hour temperature change.  The temperature plummeted from about 40 above zero to about how many degrees below zero?  40, 50, 60, or 70 below zero?
60. Not sure.

Now with the hints...

3. Stick with MD.
4. Well, I got that wrong. San An?
5. Obviously Fairbanks.
6. Stick with NYC.
7. Stick with CO.
8. Bleah.
9. Knew that one was right. :P
10. Stick with 60. Although I do agree with Of The US.

And if I could get the grade report sent as well? I'll come up with a round of questions when we're done with these if JAL doesn't mind.
