Welcome to the Embassy of the International Democratic Union! We hope your ambassador has a pleasant stay and if you do need anything, please contact the Ministry of External Affairs, or if out of hours, the admin team.
Thank you!

With this embassy, we'll certainly be able to maintain stronger ties between our two regions.

With this embassy, we'll certainly be able to maintain stronger ties between our two regions.
I look forward to that as well. I have every confidence that both TNP and the IDU will continue to have much to offer each other, and I am pleased to see that this embassy is now open.

The IDU has been a busy region, and although we've not yet finalized doing so, IDU members are discussing implementing a regional report system.

Among highlights at the IDU's forums since our most recent elections in February:

Antrium was elected as Delegate, succeeding yours truly, with Ceorana being appointed as his Vice Delegate. Antrium appointed Domnonia as Immigration Minister, and Groot Gouda as the first director of the IDU's UN Proposal Writing Service. Mikitivity was re-appointed as Foreign Minister.

Several nations who had CTE'd returned to the fold, including founding nation Xtraordinary Gentlemen (who then revived our Founder, the Free Land of the IDU), and Sober Thought, a former delegate and Immigration Minister. The region's population has remained fairly stable (between 60 and 70) with about half of them being UN members.

IDU members are currently discussing the repercussions of the changes to Nationstates introduced by the game mods. With the return of the founder nation, steps have been taken to assure the founder's continued presence in the region.

Several IDU nations sent teams to the first NS Winter Olympic Games, and each of the participating IDU teams won medals. Discussions are underway within the region concerning participation in future summer and winter games.

In the UN, the region has been particularly active. A number of proposals reaching quorum and going to the floor for a vote have originated from IDU members, including The Right To Form Union (Groot Gouda) which was adopted; Nuclear Nonproliferation Act (Franixco) which was adopted; and two proposals from IDU members awaiting a vote on the floor - Waste Disposal Convenant (Fonzoland) and UN Patent Law (Ceorana). The UN Proposal Writing Center is open to any UN member seeking assistance in developing their proposal. With the adoption of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Act. member nations in the IDU have now sponsored 13 UN resoluutions, none of which have been repealed.

(Speaking as Grosseschnauzer, newly appointed Foreign Minister of the IDU and not as the resident member nation of neu Grosseschnauzer of TNP:)

The IDU is in the process of irganizing a regional report for posting with our embassies and consultates in regions with whom we maintain diplomatic relations.

It would also be useful if those regions with whom we maintain reciprocal embassies and consultates would let me know in the IDU forums which diplomat should be according moderator rights in your embassy/consulate at the IDU so the appropriate masking and permissions can be provided. Of course, that diplomat will have to register at the IDU forums.

Thank you!

Recent Rash of Repealed Resolutions (R4)

As of this report, five of six repeals since 14 October, 2006 have passed. There is also a repeal curently at vote that looks like it will pass. We in the IDU are interested in conceptualizing the replacement resolutions that have been mentioned in some of these repeals but so far have not been brought forward for vote.

We are in the process of making a list of repealed resolutions and hope to partner with nations from other regions in discussing and conceptualizing better replacements. We are looking for your help. Please contact our Delegate or post a message on the IDU’s Foreign Affairs subforum. If enough regions are interested we could host an R4 Summit to work on this alarming problem.

The Klouch Summit on Regional Cooperation has been in session for over a month now. The formal organizational documents have not yet been created but the hope is that all representatives can come to agreement on governance so that all IDU UN and non-UN nations can come together to discuss Regional issues and create either guidelines or mandates for all participating nations.

Malabra, former delegate and long time IDU member returned to the region after a brief relocation to Red Sox Nation. While there Malabra also took 1st place in the Blind World Cup.

Bears Armed took 3rd in the NSvision Song Contest and 11th out of 36 nations in total medals at the Winter Olympics.

Quintessence of Dust also has a UN Resolution in the queue; Extraordinary Rendition. The fact that it reached quorum on the first try, with minimal effort from its author, is a testament to the quality of resolutions crafted by IDU members.

IDU member National and International Developments:

IDU member nations are gearing up to participate in the IDU Summer Games. Sigma City, Gerainia is hosting the event, which is likely to start near the end of the month.

Baranxtu has provided regional members with a wiki - which has been taken advantage of greatly.

Bears Armed expressed interest in annexing a forlorn portion of land currently in the possession of Keeslandia. The request may or may not be taken up with the IDU Council.

The IDU Council, an elected and internally concerned body, is currently debating the merits of an Unclaimed Territories Secretariat. The chief proponent of said legislation is Bears Armed.

The IDU Council is also in the midst of establishing an amendment to expand the powers of the IDU Currency Organization, which would allow nations to much more easily opt-in to the scheme.

Politiking

In April 2008, the Jageran military became involved in the civil war in Jonquiere-Tadoussac, fighting on the side of the Démocratique faction. Since entering the war, Jageran troops have assisted in bringing peace to several Jontadain provinces, as well as securing the Îles Jontadains as a base for future Jageran operations.

In May 2008, Jagera became involved in a dispute with the Democratic Republic of Ferveo after Jageran vessels were moved into Fervean waters following the impact of a strange object. The two nations met at a conference hosted by the Commonwealth of Pagemaster in an attempt to put aside their differences. The event has become known as the Exordium Crisis.

In June 2008, the Jageran government has put in action a plan to launch the Near Earth Object Tracking and Distant Early Warning System (NEOT+DEWS) project to assist in monitoring the skies and protect Jagera from enemy air attacks. A research project was also launched to help study the fractal nature of reality in the vicinity of Jagera's eastern coast.

An order was made forcing the expulsion of all Pagemaster citizens from Ferveo. Two weeks later, the government issued a formal apology to the Commonwealths of Pagemaster and Jagera on behalf of her late predecessor, President Gabriel Seismos. Weeks earlier President Seismos had been murdered in an unprecedented attack by the Fervean Values Force, who had also detonated the bombs in Ferveo City.

Armed assailants tried to break into the home of Marsyus Prime Minister Baldev Uttam in the lead up to the nations unilateral declaration of independence from Gygeaul.

RECENTLY TheIDU polled it's residents to find out how well they really knew their region. The question asked, "Which three of the following nations have never held the position of Vice-Delegate?", followed by a pick-list of 14 options.

THE RESULTS:

100% of respondents were in fact CORRECT to avoid selecting Antrium as an answer, as that nation has held the Vice-Delegacy a whopping three consecutive times from November 12th of 06 through to the 4th of October 07. Nearly a full year!

Kudos to you all for neglecting Gnejs, as they held the position from August 10th 06, prior to Antrium beginning his year long dictatorship.

And Groot? Well, if anyone had voted for him it could be safe to assume that you've been in a coma the last month. Not only is Groot happily infecting us with his current VD status, but has played the locus twice before; both in three month spans beginning the 8th of January 05 and the 9th of May 06. It is worth noting that our friend was in remission during 2007.

Now, for the rest? Dissapointing!! Though I would have done no better.

37.5% of participants thought that Adam Island had never held the Vice-Delegate position. They were wrong. The nation was waiting in the sidelines from March 8th to May 8th 05. FAIL!

A full quarter of surveyed residents were CORRECT in concluding that Domnonia has never been Number Two, let alone held any elected position within the IDU.

A further quarter deduced FAILingly that the Scoopy nation is as uncommitted to Democracy as his unelected brethren. Scoopy billeted the coveted spot from the 9th of May 05 to late June, when he was ensconced as Co-Acting Delegate along with Mikitivity.

Pagemaster assumed a lengthy stint from Nov 07 to March 08, resulting in a FAIL for 12.5% of tally-partakers.

A quadrant of balloters also FAILED when they assumed Gerainia had never been called to the occupation, especially considering its status as recently as the 14th May 08, ending 67 days of tepid, backroom tyrannical shenanigans.

Surprisingly, though most have never had the good fortune to partake in the benevolent rule of Nieuwe Munchkinland The Good, only a slender minority(12.5%) erroneously dismissed the nations great deeds; likely owing to the fact that the lore of that Vice-Delegacy continues unabated, even posthumously.

Baranxtu? In the highest echelons of power? Some no doubt have castigated the nation as a rogue who was anti-IDU, who would tax them, try to convert them to Lilliputianism, who would discriminate against them in awarding high administrative positions, and who would interfere in their domestic matters. This view has been heavily promoted in the government approved textbooks, schools and colleges in, apparently, half of IDU member states. These are, of course, fabrications against one of the best rulers of the IDU who was pious, scholarly, saintly, un-biased, liberal, magnanimous, tolerant, competent, and far-sighted from the 1st of July 06 to the 9th of that same month. It was 8 days of utter bliss before Baranxtu assumed the role of Acting-Delegate and the aforementioned cruelty was, in fact, the norm.

37.5% said Malabra has never been Vice-Delegate. This would lead one to reason that 62.5% of respondents must be mad with salacious enthusiasm for the jungle Kingdom. Malabra, though Delegate for a time, has never been VD.

Despite the advances in fractal reality research and it's applications to rewriting history, a quarter of participants have a while to wait yet before they can wipe this blemish clean. Ceorana was head honcho-in-waiting from the 9th of February to the 9th of May 06, depending on who you ask.

Mikitivity, though wonderful in every way, has never been VD. And 87.5% of respondents don't know that. In fact, Mik, like Domnonia, has never held an elected office. I'd vote for Mikivity. YES WE CAN!

And finally, Keeslandia. The barren north, where a pizza will get to your house faster than an ambulance and parents regularly take their kids trick-or-treating in a blizzard. Three quarters were correct when they avoided ticking off this massive, empty land. Unfortunately, 25% failed. Kees was VD from the 8th of November 05 to the 8th of February 06.

Heh, no doubt. Quite the mobile population here. Though, I would imagine that you'd be pleasantly surprised to find that more are correct than you'd ever have thought; The storied past of the TNP has become a bit of legend, after all.

DOM ANNOUNCES AND URGES IDU & TNP SUPPORT OF TWO WA PROPOSALS

From the Domini Globe and Post:
The Domini Foreign Ministry, having considered the question of the neutrality of states and agreeing that it is a right of any nation that is not at war in a specific conflict to make a formal claim of Neutrality, announced Friday Domnonia's unequivocal support for the passage of this resolution.  IDU Delegate Gerainia has also expressed interest and tentative for support for such a proposal.

The Resolution would be proposed by the nation of Charlotte Ryberg, with much draft assistance from IDU member Mikitivity, former IDU member Quintessence of Dust and others, as the Neutrality of Nations, which would restrict political freedoms in the interest of law and order. Domnonia believes that the resolutions intent is to significantly add to political stability.

In supporting the Resolution, Foreign Affairs Minister Alice Lidell says that, "affirming that the sovereign right of every State to determine independently its foreign policy in accordance with the norms and principles of international law is of utmost importance not only to those governments involved, but more importantly, to the legitimacy of the citizenry."

"The desire of Parliament is to play an active and positive role in developing peaceful, friendly and mutually beneficial relations with the countries of the region and other states of the world, expressing the hope that the protected status of neutrality will contribute to the strengthening of peace and security internationally," said Lidell.

The drafting nations agree that the proposal still has a few minor details to work out, but on the whole is able to do what it sets out within it's preamble.  Two recent edits of the text greatly strengthen the proposal against those that would use slippery logic to subvert the intent of the proposal.

Also announced this morning was the full support for a World Assembly proposal that aims to ban the use of cluster munitions in any circumstance. IDU Member State Jagera has also expressed support for the Act.

Cluster munitions are weapons that open in mid-air and randomly scatter dozens or hundreds of individual submunitions (or “bomblets”) over a large area. Cluster munitions pose severe risks to civilians’ lives and livelihoods both at the time of their use and after hostilities have ended. This is due to the wide-area effect of cluster munitions and the large number of sub-munitions they leave unexploded. Unexploded sub-munitions have a long-term impact. They cause human rights violations and hinder humanitarian assistance, peace operations, post-conflict reconstruction and development efforts. Unless practical international steps are taken, the hazards to civilians from cluster munitions will increase as cluster munitions continue to proliferate and the numbers being used rise globally.

The Cluster Munitions Act, authored by the nation of Aivres, proposes global disarmament of the weapons. Not only will the Resolution, if adopted, prohibit the use, production, stockpiling or otherwise acquiring or sharing of cluster munitions among WA signatories, but it would also demand an immediate start of cluster munition decommissioning and destruction in all WA member states without further delay.

In a surprising move, Prime Minister Taylor Eden Carlson has taken on the Cluster Munitions portfolio himself, saying, "Only a legally binding instrument will allow us to effectively combat the devastating effects of cluster bombs. These deadly weapons, which claim far too many victims worldwide year by year, must be outlawed internationally."

"the proposition provides a real opportunity to take a strong stand against cluster munitions. We must seize this opportunity to take effective action that reflects our strong concerns over these weapons.  Our experience teaches us that after-the-fact clearance is not enough. For we seek to help construct an international regime in which the use of cluster bombs is no longer allowed. Their elimination is our goal. And a this proposal is our means," equivocated Eden Carlson at a Human Rights conference in Ungava, East Hiel.

The Cluster proposal is currently lacking support to make it to a general vote in the Assembly.  Quintessence of Dust, on behalf of Wysteria, has proclaimed support along with 18 other regions.  The proposal needs 99 sponsors by midnight Sunday, and so a heavy campaign push is in the works by Domini Foreign officials.

Lidell also calls upon Members of the International Democratic Union, the North Pacific and all World Assembly participants to respect and support both resolutions.

As Delegate of The North Pacific, I am pleased to reopen the embassy of the International Democratic Union, one of TNP's oldest and closest allies.

The IDU was founded by TNP refugees who fled in the era of Great Blight, and have continued to foster both regions' participation in the NSUN and WA eras.

Again, I welcome the representatives of the IDU to their embassy in TNP.

Regional News Update

Greetings from the International Democratic Union!

The last few months have been quite eventful for the IDU. In addition to the election of our delegate, Sidh Ohn Embassy, we have seen a wonderful increase in our region's size, breifly reaching the milestone of 100 members for the first time in years.

In addition to our increasing size, we have also seen an increase in the level of our activity. One of our members, Bears Armed, was the author of a recently passed GA resolution, "Law of the Seas". The resolution provides a much needed replacement to it's predecessor, "Law of the Sea", while improving upon some of the aspects that were used as grounds for its repeal. Additionally, Embolalia has taken time from his defense missions with the United Defenders League to suggest a proposal which would require nations to make a credible attempt to resolve their disputes peacefully, while providing a WA-funded arbitration service to assist in doing so at the nations' request. The IDU has a long history of resolution-writing in both the WA and the now-defunct NSUN, at one time being among the most prolific regions for resolutions in the world. The region and its members are hopeful that these days will soon return.

Finally, the global map project, which is being developed in concert with multiple other regions, is still active and has progressed greatly since the last update. With the shape of the IDU's continent and the Eastern Islands of Dharma's archipelago now essentially finalized, work has begun on demarcating the borders of the nations in those regions. In addition to the IDU and EID, the map is now officially set to include both Antarctic Oasis and The North Pacific. While other regions are not currently being solicited, there is hope that such will soon be possible.

Regional News Update

Greetings from the International Democratic Union!

The IDU recently suffered a crushing defeat in the failure of the World Assembly to pass landmark legislation, authored by our long-time member Bears Armed, which would have guaranteed equal rights to all sapient beings. The IDU is deeply disappointed in the Assembly for failing to pass common-sense legislation to ensure equality.

The level of bigotry shown by Assembly members during the debate has driven Bears Armed to consider dropping out of the Assembly, to the disappointment of many region members. While the decision is not final, our current delegate has agreed to maintain that position while Bears Armed makes their decision. This leadership crisis comes on the tail of a disappointing election marked by a lack of candidates.

We hope to have better news to report in the future. A proposal authored by Eastern Islands of Dharma member and friend of the IDU Unibot is currently up for discussion, and we sincerely hope for his success in bringing true equality to the World Assembly.

Greetings from the International Democratic Union!

The past few months have been an exciting time for the IDU. We have seen the arrival of a number of new nations. In addition to a number who are new to the game, we also had the pleasure of welcoming some veterans, including Sanctaria, Connopolis, and the return of American Federalist and Yelda's IDU mission, among others.

In World Assembly news, we have seen both successes and failures. The Biological Arms Limitation Law, written by IDU member Bears Armed, failed with only 44% of the vote. It was followed immediately, however, by the resounding success of IDU member Embolalia's repeal of the WA Copyright Charter with 83% of the vote. This overwhelming margin places it solidly in the top 10% of resolutions ever passed by the assembly.

The IDU hopes that this victory, as well as the joining and return of a few prominant authors, will help usher in a return to the IDU's legacy as a home for innovation in the World Assembly.
