Anyone know anything about Japan?

The Navy in their infinte wisdom has decided to send me to Sasebo, Japan as a duty station. I have no clue what to expect. I've been reading that thing from that English teacher who lives in Japan. (Must protect butthole) I've been reading other stuff but I don't know whats true and whats made up. So if there are any Japan experts that can help me out I'd be overjoyed.

Lucky dog is all I have to say. My Uncle was stationed 'round those parts, actually more than a few have been stationed there. (Navy family), I think it'll be good fun. You'll have to wait for Deikura to get back, she can help you out.

It's not a very helpful tip, but I've noticed that Japanese people are, on the whole, incredibly cool individuals. Just look at their hair. Wow.

Uh. The reason I asked this question is because I've talked to many people who have returned from Japan and they have told me um...horror stories. So I'm kinda worried also. People tend to say "oh Japan is great blah blah blah" but people who have been there say its pretty but the amount of racism and such is sick.

You've got to go with an open mind and hope that even if it is as bad as people have told you, you might get lucky and really enjoy your time there. At the very least you can get some cheap electronics

EDIT: Hookogi, I pinned the topic so you might get some useful replies hopefully.

Ah yes, they are fairly xenophobic. The japanese always have been as far as I gathered, but there are still some cool people regardless of cultural norms. And watch out for kancho.

Japan is different because of the cultural background.
If you look at history, Japan was more or less isolated for a long period of time compared to most other countries which started dealing with other countries (some far away) much earlier. This still has an influence on the today culture.
In Japan you will always be a stranger, but that does not mean it is impossible to have fun. First you should read some information about history and the way Japanese people communicate. Especially the communication thing is important, otherwise it will drive you crazy.
For example yes does not necessarily mean yes, but "yes, I agree", "yes, maybe", "I will think about it", "I don't agree", "no way dude" and a couple of other options. Just be open minded and prepared. This should work.

Thank you all. The last time I posted this on a web forum people called me a racist and blah blah blah and did not help at all. I'm trying to keep an open mind and stuff but I mean its divided on people who come back the ones who come back married or something always love it but other say to watch out its like either they love it or hate it. So something must be wrong their is never anyone in the middle you know.

Having been myself, it really comes down to where you are, and how you take it. It can easily be both the best and worst experiences of your life... but, well, it all comes down to how you take it.

It'll be an adventure. Enjoy it.

Thanks

I'm going to Sasebo which is a decent size city. I think I'll like it better because its away from Tokyo. Tokyo seems too American. I kinda want to get away from all that for a bit you know.

Well, if you immerse yourself and refuse to speak english to Japanese people, and assuming your contact with them is high, you'll pick it up in about a month, I'd figure.

watashi no nihongo no benkyou no hotondo ha saisho no ni shuu ni atta. watashi ha hijou ni sumaato de aru shitagatte anata no kekka ha kawaru kamo shire nai. :spin:

While it may not be the best, the only advice i could give is go out and find and English-Japanese dictionary. It may be a rough start, but it helps.
