Great Western Railway train named after granddaughter of Robert Baden-Powell

train.jpg

Gill Clay and her Intercity Express Train

Great Western Railway has continued the tradition of naming its trains by bestowing Intercity Express Train No. 800021 with the name of an inspirational Scout leader to celebrate 100 years of Scouting in Wales.

The Intercity Express Train was named after Inspirational Scout leader Gill Clay at a special ‘Great Westerners’ ceremony at Swansea station. Gill is 87, a Beaver leader from Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, and the granddaughter of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts.

The ceremony paid tribute to both Gill’s lifetime of dedication to Scouting and to 100 years of Scouting in Wales.

Gill Clay and Joe Graham, GWR Business Assurance and Strategy Director

Last year Gill became the 399th person to receive Scouting’s highest honour, the Bronze Wolf Award, the only award presented by the World Scout Committee.

The award recognises outstanding service, commitment, and contributions by volunteers to the Scout Movement.

Great Western ‘Great Westerners’ theme recognises past and present heroes with connections to the company’s network.

Other trains that have been named in recognition include Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, NHS founder Aneurin Bevan and best-selling author Agatha Christie.

Many members of the Scout Movement and Gill’s family attended the ceremony to recognise Gill, who has made an extraordinary contribution both to local Scouts and the global Scouting community.

The naming of 800021 will help to pay tribute to her commitment and celebrate 100 years of Scouting in Wales.

The “Gill Clay” naming ceremony

After the naming ceremony, 800021 Gill Clay operated the 13.22 service from Swansea to London Paddington.

“We are so proud that over 18,000 Scouts of all ages in Wales are being recognised with a train named after one of our most famous members. This year we are celebrating 100 years of devolved Scouting in Wales and this train, launched the day before Founders Day, marks the start of our celebrations. Founders Day is a celebration of the shared values and common goals of 57 million Scouts all over the world as we work towards peace, unity and international friendship. We make these big ambitions a reality with simple acts of kindness in everyday lives – supporting people in our communities and living our promise to help other people. This train is a great reminder of that, and Gill Clay embodies those values and our ambition to leave the world a better place.”

Polish steam locomotive restored in memory of 11-year old boy

train.jpg

Lord Oliver Brown

A team of train enthusiasts have restored a former Polish steam engine to running order in memory of an 11-year-old boy who died of a rare form of cancer, and to raise money for the hospice where he died.

Oliver Brown from Plymstock in Devon had a rare form of blood cancer called Myelodysplastic Syndrome, which throughout the world only affects four in one million children.

Oliver received treatment for it for three years, but in May 2019 doctors told his parents they could do no more for Oliver, and he only had a few weeks to live.

The Browns decided to have as much fun as possible whilst Oliver was well enough, and to provide his brother Benjamin with a lifetime of memories of him.

Oliver sadly passed away on 2nd November 2019 at Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Harbour in St Austell.

For the last five years, train enthusiasts and friends of Oliver’s parents Mike and Nicky have been busy restoring a 1959 Polish ‘Tkh’ steam locomotive at the Plym Valley Railway in memory of Oliver.

Restoration has now been completed, and the locomotive has been painted in Oliver’s favourite colours of striking pink and green colour scheme and named Lord Oliver Brown.

It also incorporates the Children’s Hospice South West logo and suggestions from Oliver’s brother Benjamin.

Oliver’s mother Nicky said she was incredibly proud that her beautiful son has inspired this wonderful locomotive which would continue to spread smiles and happiness, and also support the hospice that had done so much for Oliver and his family since 2017.

Lord Oliver Brown is owned by Marc Bellin.

Its new livery was designed by Marc’s Network Rail colleague Richard Gibson, who is a friend of the Brown family and one of the team who worked on the restoration project.

On Sunday 9th March, which would have been Oliver’s 17th birthday, Lord Oliver Brown will steam for the first time in 17 years, and take Oliver’s friends and family along the Plym Valley Railway line to Plymbridge and back, followed by journeys throughout the day for members of the public, with all money raised being donated to Children’s Hospice South West.

In January 2024, the Plym Valley Railway purchased a fully operational steam engine which achieved one of its long-term goals, and last November a pair of ex-GWR HST power cars found a home at the railway.

Sarah Stott, Head of Fundraising at CHSW’s Little Harbour Children’s Hospice said they were really excited for the launch of the Lord Oliver Brown train and it would not only honour Oliver’s memory and that being enjoyed by other children and families while raising money for the hospice would be really special.

“This train can only make you smile. It’s brought so many people together, made new friendships and memories, which is amazing as it’s just what Oliver did through his life – made friends and created memories for others. Oliver was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome at Bristol Children’s Hospital towards the end of 2016, which he had developed as a result of a complicated genetic disorder relating to his GATA2 gene that also led to him being born deaf. He then spent the following three years facing intense invasive treatments, over 15 operations, time in isolation and two 5-month stints in Bristol Children’s Hospital.”

Ludlow station’s new lift opens and will transform access for passengers

Region & Route: Wales & Western: Wales & Borders

train.jpg

Ludlow Station AfA

Members of the community joined MP Stuart Anderson to mark the official opening of Ludlow station’s new lift last Friday (21 February).

The completed scheme makes the station – which is run by Transport for Wales (TfW) - much easier to use for passengers, especially those who are wheelchair users, have limited mobility, or are travelling with luggage, bicycles, and pushchairs.

The new lift has been installed next to the existing footbridge on platform 1 to help passengers make their connections to stations south of Ludlow, such as Hereford.

The new lift is funded by the Department for Transport as part of the UK Government's Access for All programme which was launched in 2006 to address the challenges faced by disabled passengers and those with mobility issues when using railway stations. Ludlow station was selected along with Cwmbran, Tenby, Newtown, Abergavenny, Llanelli and Flint.

Making stations accessible to everyone benefits the economy by reducing car travel, which lowers traffic and cuts carbon emissions.

Rachel Heath, Network Rail Wales and Borders operations director, said: “We're thrilled to share the exciting news about Ludlow joining our growing collection of step-free stations as part of the Access for All programme.

“It’s essential for us to make our railway as welcoming and accessible as possible, encouraging even more people to choose the railway for their sustainable travel journeys. Improving the convenience and accessibility of our stations is really at the heart of this effort.

"I want to thank the local community for their patience while we carried out these important upgrades.”

Stuart Anderson, MP for South Shropshire, added: “ It was a pleasure to mark the official opening of the lift at Ludlow station, and it’s even more fitting as I’m currently on crutches.

“I think accessibility is part of people's everyday life - if you don't consider it, you're basically saying 'you cannot travel this way'."

Robert Gravelle, on behalf of the TfW Accessibility and Inclusion panel, said: “TfW are unwaveringly committed to accessibility and inclusion, and the significance of the Ludlow improvements are a clear illustration.

“It has been long recognised that upon fruition, the provision of an Access for All scheme would have generational benefits to Ludlow and its surrounding area. It's inspiring to see that so many have come together in this shared aspiration to make rail transport easier and unrestricted for all.”

During the project, parts of the road and footpath had to be closed to keep the public and workers safe. The station remained open throughout as the teams used Saturday night closures to complete the work close to the railway.

Trains overspeeding in south Wales

Trains overspeeding in blanket speed restrictions in south Wales, 27 January 2025.

1740481006472.png

The start point of one of the blanket speed restrictions at Bishton

Between 11:33 and 14:08 on 27 January 2025, at least eight trains did not observe blanket speed restrictions of 50 mph (80 km/h) that had been imposed at two locations along the South Wales Main Line.

The speed restrictions were in place because of forecast high winds between Neath and Swansea, and an associated hazard from high-risk trees between Bishton and Newport.

Although some of these trains travelled at speeds significantly above the imposed restrictions, there were no reported consequences.

We have undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, we have decided to publish a safety digest.

The safety digest will be made available in the next few weeks.

Staffordshire train manufacturer to supply hybrid locomotives to Australia

train.jpg

Clayton type CBD40 locomotive

Clayton Equipment of Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire has won an order from Mackay Sugar, Australia’s second-largest sugar milling company, to supply five hybrid locomotives and additional support Brake Vans for its fleet.

The locomotives are Claytons type CBD40 fitted with hybrid technology using a self-contained onboard charging capability to provide long-range use without needing to be charged from the mains.

The CBD40 type locomotive provides a low-to-no emission solution to transport sugar cane to Mackay Sugar’s factories and the capability of a locomotive twice its size but in a carbon-efficient way.

Clayton Brake Van

CBD40 locomotives benefit from reduced maintenance and improved operational costs and incorporate regenerative braking for reduced brake wear.

Equipped with the latest diesel engines, they provide the most efficient and cleanest technology available in the market today and will help Mackay Sugar to achieve its objective of reducing carbon emissions for its rail operations and helping create a greener future for the local industry.

As well as the CBD40 locomotives, Clayton will produce the brake vans coupled to the rear of trains. Improved radio technology will allow communication with the vans when they are more than 1.7 km from the locomotive.

Clayton Equipment has long experience in manufacturing advanced low-emission locomotives for mainline, shunting, and mining sectors, having been established over 90 years ago.

Mackay Sugar views the new Clayton Equipment as benefitting not only Mackay Sugar but the broader Australian sugar industry as they reflect its commitment to integrating cutting-edge safety features and advanced technology into its locomotive fleet.

Clayton Equipment has been producing battery-powered shunting locomotives for several years and has supplied a battery-powered locomotive to the Bure Valley Railway in Norfolk.

“We are very pleased with this new order to supply Mackay Sugar with sustainable, low emission, environmentally compliant equipment which meets their commitment to invest in technology and provide cost savings with long term durability. The collaboration with Mackay Sugar allowed us to gain the understanding of what they required to achieve the right solution and ensure the best return on investment. Protecting their business in a clean environmentally way.”

First cycle train enters service on the Heart of Wales line

train.jpg

Heart of Wales Line 153

The first of six fully refurbished cycle travel trains has launched on the Heart of Wales line.

As part of a gradual introduction, by the summer, customers will be able to bring up to 12 bicycles and e-bikes onboard the service that runs between Swansea and Shrewsbury.

Until that point only two bikes can be brought onboard, in line with all other TfW trains.

The trains are being introduced to tap into the fantastic walking and cycling opportunities in Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Powys and Shropshire.

They will also offer additional seats compared with the single car trains that currently operate on the line.

Heart of Wales Line 153

Each bike carriage is in a specially designed livery to reflect the best the Heart of Wales line has to offer.

Transport for Wales Project Manager Matthew Payn said it was “an exciting new development for the line”.

He said: “This has been a fantastic project to work on and a great investment to make the most of what the Heart of Wales line has to offer.

“By the summer when all the trains are running you’ll be able to take up to 12 bikes for leisure or commuting.

“It’s a fantastic example of upcycling, taking an older train and refurbishing it for a new purpose to help more people get out and use their bikes to enjoy some of the best countryside Wales and England has to offer.

“This is a unique offering for us and an exciting new development for the line and I hope all our customers get to enjoy the service soon.”

Heart of Wales Line 153

The bike carriages have been refurbished by Chrysalis Rail at Landore depot in Swansea in partnership with Transport for Wales.

The project has seen a number of seats removed from six of TfW’s Class 153 trains to make way for 10 bike spaces, with room for tandems too.

The carriages will be coupled to a standard class carriage which includes a fully accessible toilet and space for a further two bikes, making up the total of 12.

Running in two car formation, the cycle carriages will offer a total of 108 seats, an increase of 42 compared with the single carriage trains that have previously operated on the line.

While the first train entered service in February, the remaining five will be joining the fleet gradually up until the summer to ensure a smooth introduction.

The unit number of the first cycle train into service was 153552.

There will be a formal launch of the new trains, including a media event, later this summer.

New Norfolk home for Hunslet steam locomotive

train.jpg

Newstead at the Spa Valley Railway

Hunslet, Newstead, has found a new home in Norfolk after discussions with the Spa Valley Railway.

The Spa Valley Railway felt that it wouldn’t be fair to sign an operating agreement with Newstead’s owner as other engines are arriving on short, medium and long term hires, as well as the return to service or the Jinty locomotive.

With this in mind, Newstead will move to its new home of the North Norfolk Railway, where finishing touches will be made, testing and launch into service.

It is hoped this will happen over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend.

Marcus & Cleo Have Another Bus Adventure into Cardiff!

We had lunch before we left home, so caught a later bus.

After arriving in Cardiff Centre we started off in 'The Great Western' and I had a couple of pints of 'Doombar', Cleo was being good and had a cup of tea.

I popped into my Model Railway shop and this time bought some road vehicles.

We had a look around some shops and Cleo bought some wool for her crochet

We then went to the 'Gatekeeper', I switched to 'Abbott's and Cleo stuck to her tea.

Then it was the bus home.

The bus into Cardiff was Cardiff Bus/Bws Caerdydd 253, Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro 200 Classic, CE63 NZH - seen here at Castle street, Cardiff on 4 April 2024

Here In Wales you have Rugby and the hallowed turf of the Millennium Stadium, Welsh choirs, mountains, sheep, the odd leek and daffodil and BRAINS.

Brains beer has been brewed by founder Samuel Arthur Brain and his descendants since 1882 and the Cardiff-based brewery is still there and still run by the family.

Here we celebrate the famous regional brewery on our Volvo FH Curtain side truck decorated in a dramatic black colour scheme with red and gold Welsh Dragon on the sides of the trailer, cab doors and wind deflector.

The Brains logo is applied in contrasting white lettering on the sides of the trailer whilst printed across the top of the rear door is a slogan, 'It's Brains you Want'.

And a final detail sees the 'personalised' registration plate BR55 AIN.

Network SouthEast livery unveiled for Clacton EMU vehicle

train.jpg

BDTC No.75965 in NSE livery

The Clacton Express Preservation Group has revealed the completion of work on one of the Class 309 EMU vehicles at the East Anglian Railway Museum.

BDTC No. 756965 has had work completed over a six-month period to weatherproof the vehicle, which had suffered from several vandalism attacks at its previous storage location.

The work has included a full strip and repaint of the body sides and roof to assess corrosion.

Several damaged doors and window frames have been rebuilt, and a full repaint has been made into the Network SouthEast livery.

The work has been made possible thanks to the fundraising efforts carried out by the CEPG and a £1500 donation from the Clacton Classic Car Club.

The vehicle is now outside, ready to be displayed at the Chapel Winter Beer Festival, which runs until the 1st of March, 20225.

Interior work will then be completed ready for The Essex Electrics Exhibition in April.

More bodywork will be required in the long term, but attention must turn to weatherproofing MBS 61828, which will receive a similar programme of work in the coming months.

Thomas the Tank Engine to help spread Autism Awareness at Peterborough railway

train.jpg

The Nene Valley Railway is to hold a special Autism Awareness Day with Thomas the Tank Engine on Wednesday, April 2.

This is a perfect opportunity for autistic adults and children to get up close to one of the country’s most famous and recognizable steam locomotives as Thomas celebrates his 80th birthday this year.

The hosting of this event shows the Nene Valley Railway’s continued commitment to supporting people who have physical and mental disabilities.

Passengers can have unlimited rides behind Thomas all day as he makes his way between Wansford and Yarwell.

They will also be able to watch Thomas take water and run around his train at both ends of his trip.

There will also be opportunities to visit the shed on a guided tour where Thomas sleeps overnight, and depending on which other engines are visiting the railway, Thomas may not be the only big star in attendance.

The railway will have designated quiet spaces on offer if things become too much for members, and there will be a Gift Shop, Cafe and Charity Shop open to make the most of a special day out at the Nene Valley Railway.

GB Railfreight biomass trains to North Yorkshire to use Vegetable Oil

train.jpg

GBRf 60076 at The Port of Tyne HVO refuelling station

GB Railfreight (GBRf) is to use Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) exclusively for all its locomotives on freight services from the Port of Liverpool and the Port of Tyne to Drax power station at Selby, in North Yorkshire.

The use of hydrotreated vegetable oil comes after GB Railfreight signed a 12-month agreement with Drax that its locomotives operating at the power station would exclusively use the fuel.

By agreeing to only use HVO, GB Railfreight has taken a further step towards its decarbonisation strategy, most significantly with the recent announcement that its new Class 99 locomotives would run solely on electricity or renewable fuels such as HVO.

Marketed as one of the ‘world’s greenest fuels’, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil is produced synthetically through a hydro-treatment process that uses vegetable oils or animal fats.

When used in diesel locomotives, the amount of harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions is significantly reduced.

GB Railfreight started delivering sustainable biomass to Drax in 2016, and since then its trains have delivered over 15m tonnes of fuel from Peel Ports in Liverpool to the power station.

That has required 10,000 train journeys, equivalent to three journeys per day, and provided sufficient fuel to generate enough electricity to power up to 4 million homes and businesses.

Biomass train at Drax

Drax generates around 8% of the UK’s renewable energy, which accounts for approximately 4% of the country’s total electricity usage, and GB Railfreight’s services play a critical role in supporting the UK’s energy security and transition to net zero.

Originally opened as a coal-fired power station, Drax has been generating electricity since 1974.

To celebrate 50 years since its opening three special “Drax 50 Years 1974-2024” charter trains ran last August, with each train using a different route around the power station infrastructure.

Drax Power Station

“We’ve had a strong relationship with Drax for over twelve years and I’m delighted that, together, we’ve agreed to use HVO to deliver our services. This is one of many initiatives within GB Railfreight’s carbon reduction plan that will support the UK Government achieve its ambitions to make the UK a clean energy superpower.”

John Smith OBE, Chief Executive Officer at GB Railfreight

“This agreement marks an important step in our commitment to sustainability and innovation in transport. By exclusively using HVO for rail services, we are reducing our supply chain emissions and supporting the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. We are proud to continue our long-standing partnership with GB Railfreight, helping drive both energy security and the UK’s decarbonisation goals forward.”

Mark Gibbens, Head of Logistics at Drax
