Felinus Sector.
Planet: Rhan.
Date (Feline Calendar):532
Rhan, not to be confused with the Star ‘Ran’, which was a K-Type Orange dwarf named after a Human Mythological Figure, was a Habitable Planet in the Felinus System, one of 2. It orbited the Secondary component, a Brown Dwarf at the L-T Transition. It was, obviously, one of the more inhabited planets, they were increasingly sought after habitation after all, especially ones like Rhan, where you got a beautiful view of the Brown Dwarf, which wouldn’t blind you, hanging in the sky. You can even see the other planets that orbited Eos, the Brown Dwarf.
“Tell me, you grew up here, yes?” Asked Feline Captain Yarsvo Drakous, speaking to his XO.
“Yes Sir, Yavana City, just on the coast of the Northern Continent.” The XO Said, pointing to the Area on the planet. The Planet had a 2-3 Resonance with its parent star, and had an interesting day night cycle.
“What's it like growing up under the sky?” The Captain asked, and the XO raised his brow. He knew the Captain had grown up on a Colony located on a Planet known as ‘Excelsior’, it was in the Nova Moscow System, and a Human Colony. Excelsior had a high non-human population however, and the ice planet, with its rings, was somewhat of a draw due to its high amounts of resources.
“I don’t know how to describe it, I guess it's one of those things you never really think about, and in all honestly I still think about the times I would play with my friends as a child in those woods.” The XO said, and the captain smiled.
“And I still think about each time I donned a suit to look up at Excelsiors rings. Some people think it's depressing to live without a sky, but the truth is that there is a sky, and everytime you look up at it, those rare moments are so special.” The Captain said, he cast his gaze once more out to the Vibrant Blue-Green globe below him, 12,000 Kilometers in diameter and home to a Billion and a half people.
“Anyway, there is a good reason I invited you up here XO.” The Captain said, “The Admiralty has ordered fleet maneuvers for many of the fleets of the UFR, It seems they want us and a couple of other large fleets at the ready.”
“Really?” The XO asked, “Which other fleets are going into maneuvers?” He asked
The Captain sighed, putting his Paw-like hand to his face.
“I remember seeing the Hadrox Defense Fleets and Nova Moscow Defense fleets being ordered into maneuvers too, I think the Vjolkan and Marealian Fleets were as well.” He said.
“Sounds like they are testing the Planetary defense fleets specifically.” The XO noted.
“Well, it's not the first time they have done this.” The Captain stepped back from the viewscreen which acted like a window, and towards the Helmsman.
“Arjuda, I already informed you of the maneuvers, I trust we will rejoin with the rest of the fleet shortly?” The Captain asked.
“Yes Sir, we are the first here actually with the exception of the orbital Defense fleets, The Rest of the fleet will be here in 10 Balomits.” The Helmsnen said.
“Good.” The Captain mumbled, giving A glance out the viewscreen, rising above the Planet now was the Brown Dwarf, its Bright Reddish-Orange Bands like those of a Gas Giant Glowing faintly and casting a Red light on its planet.
“Alert me when the Fleet Maneuvers begin.” The Captain said, “I have a lot of Backlogged Messages to go through, and I will be attending to that for the time being.”
The XO nodded, and the Captain walked off the bridge and into a hallway that contained the Crew Quarters of the Senior Staff, Heavy Cruisers, such as the Kentaurus, were fairly comfortable for the upper ranks of the crew. The Kentaurus Was Commissioned in a Shipyard in the Tersa System and was named after one of many things from Old Human Myths. He couldn’t recall with true certainty what it was named after, since he hadn’t been captain of this ship for much more than a Year, but he was somewhat certain Kentaurus was supposed to be a Star in the skies of the original Terra, although he could be wrong about that.
Yet whatever the case, none of that mattered anymore. The Captain was born on Excelsior, and despite Nova Moscow being a Human Colonized system, Excelsior was a mixed bag of species, Excelsior, having only 1.054G of Gravity yet a High Surface Radius made it desirable, and given its resource deposits, it was no wonder it had such a high population.
He heard a Ringing sound from his Holocommunicator, and he pulled it out of his pocket and quickly inspected it. It was a Call, from his Good Friend (But superior) Admiral Dredkard.
“Ah, Admiral.” The Feline Captain said, he didn’t mind the bother, he was waiting on fleet maneuvers to begin after all, “What brings you to the Kentaurus?”
“Captain Yarsvo.” Dredkard said, “I trust your position on the Kentaurus has been treating you well?”
“Very well, fine ship.” The Captain said, “I trust your new position as Vice Admiral of the 11th Defense Fleet has been treating you well yourself?”
“Quite well.” The Admiral said, “Of course, Excelsior itself has been quite the adventure, I had myself go on a Surface EVA a couple of days ago, Went around Canyon EC-X-120, It's quite pretty, and the Sunset with the rings was astounding, although that name could be better.”
“Well, thank the humans.” The Feline captain said, ruffling his headfur with his paws, “They insist on giving Everything atrocious designations, even though that Canyon is nearly 1,200 meters deep and has Sheer Walls that are perfect for racing a Shuttle through it, you do know when they first arrived in our Sector they gave Felinus the Designation HD 1503593?”
“It is a great thing we came out on top then, I’d rather not have to spend half my life memorizing the numbers of my home planet.” The Admiral muttered, “Either way, I’m here to call you about the recommendation about the Kentaurus being outfitted with those New Models of Torpedo, Admiralty is pretty hesitant about it, some are pushing for more research towards better models, since the new ones would be a pain to implement and some are concerned whether they are good enough to be worth it, You're one of the Captains we wanted to survey since the Kentaurus would have to come into stationdock and get upgrades to its Tubes in order to fit the new model.”
“Ah yes, that.” The Captain said, “I remember some of the guys said the refit would take 3 months correct?”
“Yeah, although-” There was a slight shaking sensation on the Camera on the behalf of the admiral, a Brief orange light and the camera cut off. He stared at the screen, which said ‘VIDEO FEED DISCONNECTED’
“Disconnected?” The Captain said, he thought for a moment. The Republic had very well constructed Live communications systems that had been in place for a Century and a half, and even civilian lines rarely went down, let alone Military Grade ones. He figured it must have been one of those rare times where it did, and figured the lines between Excelsior and another star system must be still open.
“Computer, find alternate connection to Excelsior.” He said, there was some audio from the computer before some buttons popped up on the screen nearby. He walked to it and looked at it, the buttons were displayed in Veticle rows.
“INTERSTELLAR_COMMS_PATH_RHAN-EXCELSIOR”
“INTERSTELLAR_COMMS_PATH_FELINUS-EXCELSIOR”
“INTERSTELLAR_COMMS_PATH_THERAPSIS_EXCELSIOR”
He looked at the options, before choosing the Path between Felinus and Excelsior.
“Overriding Standards Path ... .Unable to Override, Comms traffic full.” The Computer said.
“I’m Sorry, Military Channels?” He asked no one. He had never, ever, heard of military channel chatter being full before.
He pressed the Back Button, and then pressed the Comms Path that went through Therapsis.
“Overriding Standard Path, Successfully established link.” The Computer said, “Would you like to select the Number you wish to contact-”
“Computer, Call Admiral Dredkard.” He insisted.
“Inputting Communications to Dredkard, unable to connect”
“What?” He asked.
“Communication failure due to the receiver failing to answer.” The Mechanical voice said.
“That's not something the Admiral would do.” He muttered.
Suddenly the lights of the room turned red.
“Captain, Please report to the bridge.” Said a voice.
He rushed to the bridge, quickly walking up to the chair. Through the viewscreen he could see the distant dots of other feline ships lighting brighter as they activated their engines, they were the other military ships, and from here he could see their torches lighting and moving visibly away, before vanishing as they warped out.
“XO, Are we being withdrawn?” He asked, the XO shook his head.
“No, Our fleet is being ordered to move out, Us and a Couple of smaller fleets are being moved into the Nova Moscow System.” The XO said.
“Why?” The Captain asked.
“Captain, I’m afraid something quite bad has happened on Excelsior….”
