AN OFFICIAL CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN
As presented by the Eiyglish Public Broadcasting Service (Ōppfenliyċe Radioymberœpdiynst)

***
“Fear not,“ said an angel of the Lord to the shepherds who boded in the field. “For, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.“ This is good news for everyone, for Christmas excludes no one. It does not reject or bar any one person from the festivities. Everyone is welcome to celebrate and belongs, including you.

As we gather to celebrate Christmas and enjoy the holidays, I wish to speak to you, not only as your monarch but as a fellow Eiygle who shares in the joys and challenges of our times.

This season, we are reminded of the enduring power of love, hope, and generosity. Across our land and across the world over, families are coming together, communities are sharing their warmth, and acts of kindness are shining as beacons of light in the winter’s bitter cold.

It has been a year since the passing of His Majesty the King, my beloved father, who was an inspiration to Eiygland and a warm light to me and to all of my family. He was a kindhearted man who cared deeply for his family and his people, who held no contempt towards others, and who presented himself as an example of a good person, through his sense of duty, his words and, more importantly, his actions and deeds. He is an individual that many look up to, and his passing has affected us deeply and we will always miss him dearly.

The calendar is turning its page to a new year, which is a moment to reflect on the journey we have traversed together. We have seen many trials this year. We have faced challenges, both at home and overseas, that tested our resilience and demanded sacrifices from each one of us. Yet, in moments of adversity, we have witnessed the strength of unity. Whether it was through lending a hand to a fellow neighbour, offering comfort to those in need, or striving together toward a common good, the spirit of compassion continues to prevail. It is that unwavering spirit in these moments of trial that lends itself as a beacon of hope, and where we have seen the true strength of community.

At Christmas, we are called to reflect on the deeper meaning of this season — a time of peace, of forgiveness, and of renewal. It is a moment for us to look towards ourselves, to cherish those we hold dear, to remember those we have lost as they’ve departed from this world, and to extend our grace to those whom we may never meet but whose lives we can touch.

As we look forward to a new year, I am filled with hope for the future. Let us continue to embrace the values that bind us: respect for one another, resilience in the face of difficulty, and a commitment to building a brighter tomorrow for all. As we step into this new chapter, let us carry with us the lessons learned from this past year — the triumphs, the hardships, and the moments of solidarity. Let us forge ahead with courage, determination, and a renewed sense of purpose. Together, let us aspire to create a future built on understanding one another. Let this year be a canvas upon which we paint a portrait of progress, empathy, and boundless possibilities.

May the next new year be one of shared prosperity, where each of us finds fulfillment in our endeavors. Let us continue to stand by one another, supporting and uplifting those in need, as we embark on this journey into the unknown.

May this Christmas bring you joy, peace, and love. And may the blessings of this season be with you and your families now and in the days to come.

Merry Christmas, and may God bless you all.

EIYGLAND BEGINS TO SWITCH TO METRIC UNITS — by Wednesday Hunsen

Verstenminster, 10 November 1956 — Following a successful outcome of last month's referendum, the Government has announced plans for the country to convert from the Customary Standard to the International System of Units, commonly known as the metric system, as part of the wider effort towards decimalization in Eiygland. The vote came after both houses of the Witenagemot voted to move the parliamentary bill to adopt the metric system, and the matter of metrication generally to the voting public upon increased calls for said metrication from both businesses and Eiygland's scientific community. The plan calls for a gradual transition from miles, pounds, inches, ounces, and other Customary Standard units of measurement to metric units like kilometres, kilograms, millimetres, litres, and others like these, and that this will take place over the course of 20 years.

In a statement, the High Chancellor the Right Honourable Willmark Sesteadsfast stated that the change to the metric system will help to streamline trade, commerce, and business, as well as to increase compatibility with other nations in the fields of science, engineering, and education.

"For past centuries, we have relied on the use of Customary units as our form of measurement," said he as spake before an assembly of press: "While it has served us well for so long, in recent times it has caused confusion for our businesses and has added complications in our trade and in education. By making the switch to the metric system and officializing them publicly, we will make it easier for businesses to operate more smoothly, will lower costs across the board, and will enable our citizens to further engage with the rest of the world economy. Know that this change does not entail the complete abandonment of the Customary Standard; this is not about eschewing tradition, it is about preparing Eiygland for the future."

The transition toward metric units - The plan will establish the Metrication Board, which will be overseeing the effort of coverting to metric units over the 20 year period. During this time, it will seek to educate the public on metric units and their equivalents in the Customary Standard, as well as encourage the Eiyglish nation to incorporate the use of metric units in their daily lives. It will coordinate with the states and their governments to ensure that the metrication effort occurs nationwide and with minimal complications.

As for the transition, it is expected to occur in phases, beginning with signage on the roads, streets, and motorways being replaced to display both metric and Customary Standard units by the end of 1957; these will eventually be replaced with signs displaying solely metric units by the end of the transition period. Meanwhile, schools will proceed to educate students in metric measurements, which will take effect in the next academic year. Textbooks and other educational materials will be adjusted to reflect the change to the metric system. Finally, all consumer goods will be expected to display metric units in labelling by the end of the transition period, although they may present both metric and Customary Standard units.

The metrication process is expected to be completed by 1977, at which point the metric system will be the sole official system of measurement for construction, science, engineering, commerce, and education. The Customary Standard will not be abolished, but they will cease to be used in any official capacity in Eiygland.

Public reaction to the switch to metric - The reaction from various groups and the wider public have varied in the aftermath of the announcement from High Chancellor Sesteadsfast. The business community largely welcomed the news, with various owners, big and small, stating that the conversion will help to cut down costs on converting Customary Standard units to fit with international needs.

Many scientists and engineers have likewise have been supportive of the metrication, with several notable figures in scientific fields noting that the use of Customary Standard units added complications due to incompatibilities with internation standards, and that the change would help Eiyglish scientists and engineers to more easily collaborate with their foreign counterparts.

The public at large have expressed more mixed feelings regarding the conversion to metric units. Some have stated their support for the announcement and for the general change to the metric system, while others have expressed scepticism at the change, declaiming that the endeavour to metricate is either unnecessary, requiring people to relearn commonly used measurement units, or is damaging to Eiygland's identity as another act of abandoning Eiyglish traditions. To address these concerns, the Metrication Board announced their intent to pursue a nationwide information campaign as part of their efforts to educate the public, including through public information films broadcasted between television programming, free measurement conversion guides, and public meetings which any person may attend.

Eiygland to look to the future as latest nation to metricate - With the outcome of the referendum and the High Chancellor's announcement, Eiygland becomes the newest country in Auroria and the world overall to proceed with decimalizing its units of measurement and exhanging the Customary Standard for the metric system. While High Chancellor Sesteadsfast and other officials have recognized the concerns expressed in the wake of the announcement, they have emphasized that the conversion process will take time, and that the change, while inconvenient during the transition, will have greater benefits that will come in the long term. As the nation moves forward with the conversion, the Government has proceeded to draft the first regulations that will mandate only metric measurements. These regulations are expected to take effect by the end of next year.

An excerpt from the news programme ORÞ World News.

From Eiygland and across the world, this is ORÞ World News.

Hello, I'm Leoddild Walden, and you're watching ORÞ World News. Today, the High Chancellor the Right Honourable Cwikhelm Waterford, issued a statement befor the Riykdaag regarding an brief engagement between Scalvian and Sainaamese forces near the Tangerine Sea. This came after the the belligerents in question exchanged fire against each other, which resulted in the downing of an aircraft over the sea. In his statement, the High Chancellor stated that the Eiyglish Governemnt would be urging calm and restraint between both parties while an investigation into the incident took place. The High Chancellor also announced that Eiyglish naval assets would be called forth to participate in the search and rescue mission, that the Government is working with foreign partners and would be calling for the matter to be moved to a forum within the AN. The statement was made during a session of the Riykdaag a day after the incident occurred:

"Honourable members, I am at liberty to say that the Government has been appraised of the situation around the Tangerine Sea. Yesterday, military fires were exchanged between the forces of Scalvia and Sainaam, during which one aircraft was known to be lost. We are not at liberty to discuss the motivations regarding the incident. What I can say with certainty that the Navy has been ordered to send vessels from the Wesker Sea to assist in the rescue efforts of the downed craft."

Random jeers from parliamentarians in affirmation.

"Furthermore, the Government will be cooperating with Aubervijr, Sutherland, Lyvenntia, and other foreign allies and will be sharing intelligence data it has so far gathered as it pertains to the incident, and will be bringing this matter to the Association of Nations. As far as we are aware, information gathering efforts are ongoing, and we have reached out the government of Scalvia, requesting the details it has concerning the engagement. As we learn more about the incident, the Government is urging calm and restraint between between both Scalvia and Sainaam and implores them to avoid further hostilities. We will increasing the readiness and will be working other allies to deescalate the situation."

The Eiyglish Aviation Authority has advised all flights to avoid travel to Scalvian or Sainaamese airspace for the time being while efforts to recover the downed aircraft are in progress. We will give further updates as this story progresses.
