Meet the candidates in the Gwypehmese Mayoral Election​

The campaign for the mayoralty of Gwypehm — Kaliva's eighth largest city — is well under way. Incumbent Gwypehm Mayor Bogjan Valdroki, who’s running for re-election, is being challenged by four opponents, each touting their own backgrounds and visions for the city's future.

The following candidates are vying to deny Valdroki a fifth consecutive term in office: Rikerd Evensen, Veko Heuerkauður, Matteus Raukatz, and Kervald Starilak.

What does the mayor do?

As the highest-ranking official in the city's governance structure, the mayor assumes the pivotal role of Gwypehm's executive authority. The mayor's responsibilities encompass a wide array of duties crucial to the city's functioning and development. Firstly, the mayor serves as the enforcer and executor of the laws established by the Gwypehm City Samsad, ensuring adherence to policies within the city. Furthermore, the mayor is tasked with overseeing the intricate operations of municipal wardens and with managing the allocation of the city's annual budget. With the power to hire and terminate city officials, the mayor wields considerable influence in shaping the administrative landscape of Gwypehm.

Moreover, the mayor's authority extends to the realm of legislative oversight, with the ability to veto edicts passed by the Samsad.

Who are the candidates?
Each candidate is listed in alphabetical order based on their family name, with the incumbent at the top.

Bogjan Valdroki is running for a historic fifth term as Gwypehm mayor. Before he was elected to the position in 2004, he served on the city samsad and as Gwypehm City Gerefa. Valdroki is a Republican, generally aligned with the economically laissez-faire Kvolderite wing of the party. His campaign platform, as outlined on his website, revolves around sustaining ongoing initiatives, such as fostering business growth in Gwypehm, enhancing public riverfront access, and addressing housing shortages within the Greater Mjonsk area through expanded housing development.

Rikerd Evensen is a real estate professional. Evensen is an Independent and self-identified "radical centrist." He has campaigned against the proposed expansion of the Gwypehm Municipal Rail Project and increased construction of affordable housing units, arguing both would drive down property tax revenue.

Veko Heuerkauður is a retired television host and author who recently ran for the Governorship of Mjonsk in 2020, losing to incumbent Lanzo Moritz. Heuerkauður is a self-described "Independent," but he has stated that he expects to run under the Sovereignty Party banner. He campaigns against the acceptance of Iolantan refugees while vowing to prioritize building high-quality, affordable housing. He now supports Gwypehmese involvement in the Himjnn River Compact, a stance contrary to his previous opposition to the organization during his 2020 gubernatorial bid.

Matteus Raukatz is a Professor of Anthropological Neurobiology and Pharmacophagy at the University of Purokmava and founder of the Institute for Biosphere Protection, an environmentalist political organization. Raukatz is a Socialist. His campaign advocates for elevated environmental quality standards, a ban on single-use plastics, and increased investment in public transit to reduce emissions.

Kervald Starilak is a businessman who operates Kervald's Delikatessen. Starilak is an Independent. He advocates for lower taxes on small businesses within Gwypehm and emphasizes the importance of "fostering a good environment for local business."

By-Election Turns Ugly As Campaign Turns Toward Mehrabist-Bashing; Raises Questions Of Racism, Xenophobia

Velandlit Kindins at an anti-immigration rally in Vyksbaurge​

The Aydini Kalivese Civic Council (AKCC) in Mjonsk is calling on Urtæyothim candidate Velandlit Kindins to apologize for a recent campaign advertisiment attacking the Mehrabist faith of a fellow candidate, Turandot Yildiz. AKCC Co-Chair Amir Babakan condemned the ad, stating "[The Kindins campaign] are producing some of the most blatantly racist advertisements that I have ever seen in my life." Kindins, a venture capitalist and published business author running with the backing of the Sovereignty Party, a right-wing populist political party crtitical of globalism and free trade, released an advertisement attacking Yildiz, claiming her parents were undocumented immigrants from Aydin. The ad also claimed Yildiz supported amnesty for undocumented immigrants, promotes an 'open borders' policy, and would propogate 'Mehrabist values' in Kaliva if elected. Yildiz is depicted in an edited photo wearing a hijab, a traditional Mehrabist garmet, despite not having worn one in public.

Some have warned the ad could revive discrimination against Aydini Kalivese. Kaliva has previously struggled with Mehrabophobia and Mehrabist-bashing, especially in the 1990s, when political unrest in Aydin lead to increased rates of Aydini immigration into Kaliva. Those alive during this era can vividly recall images of protestors rallying against 'being swamped by Aydinis' and sledgehammers smashing the windows of Aydini businesses. Mehrabophobia peaked in 1995 when Aydini Kalivese taxi driver Zafer Hamid died after being beaten to death by two unemployed taxi drivers angry about Aydini immigration. The nationalist right's mobilization against the recent uptick in Iolantan refugees due to the ongoing Iolanta-Sorovia war may further stoke the flames of Merabophobia in Kaliva.

"Mr. Kindins may believe that his ad is just a means to winning an election. But it does so in a manner that points the finger at Aydini Kalivese for our nation's problems and demonizes their community as not belonging," said Engelta Vuhsa, a retired political consultant who advised ex-Prime Minister Thanedar. "Whilst Kindins claims that he is fighting to place Kaliva first, his rhetoric shows that he is 'Velandlit First' as shown by his willingness to stir division and engage in pugnacious, identity-based attacks if he believes it may benefit him."

Kindins, meanwhile, told reporters Monday that his ad is "insensitive" only to those who want to replace 'Kalivese values' with 'Mehrabist values'.

Kindins and Yildiz are both vying for the riding of Lausbaurg and Stenasag, a middle class suburban seat located within the City of Mjonsk. Urtæyothiming Gaprial Alastar, a member of the Reform faction of the governing Republican Party, previously has represented this riding before his resignation in April in order to accept a private sector position. This riding is generally considered to have been a Republican stronghold, with Alastar winning his most recent election by a 22 percent margin against underfunded and unorganized opposition. However, growing dissatisfaction over the rising cost of living and wage stagnation have caused support for the governing Republicans to crater. This has caused some pundits to speculate that Yildiz, a former prosecutor and member of the Liberal faction of the Republican Party, may have her electoral prospects negatively affected by growing discontent against the current Government.

This recent controversy has not been the first controversy that has ensnared the aspiring Urtæyothiming during the campaign; Kindins has previously drawn fire for his praise of neo-Valkyrist author Kris Sänfte, flirtations with the National Replacement Theory (which generally argues that states such as Syrixia and Saintonge seek to decimate the concept of the nation-state via promoting pro-immigration policies across Eras), and for racist statements made against the Yatryga (a minority group in Kaliva who traditionally lived a nomadic or itinerant lifestyle).

His campaign plans to continue running the ad on local cable networks for the next two weeks.
