The Thirteen Realms is a collection of thirteen independent states in eastern Arathel. Once a region of many human tribes and city-states, eastern Arathel was conquered by the snow elves of the west. The human inhabitants of these lands were turned into serfs and slaves. After a successful revolt led by the slave-turned-warrior Haril Andraad, the now-freed humans swore allegiance to him and crowned him the first Emperor of Man. This new Empire of Man lasted centuries until it disintegrated; collapsing under the political turmoil surrounding the heirless death of Emperor Adomar II. This evaporation of central imperial authority gave birth to the modern Thirteen Realms.
