Repeal "Protecting Press Freedoms"
Category: Repeal | GA #644
Proposed by: Henrictus Colony | No Onsite Topic
Replacement: None

The World Assembly,

Respecting the goal of the resolution to protect press freedom,

Dismayed that the resolution does not provide adequate protections for journalists and news organizations,

Further noting that the resolution does not prohibit member states from restricting the dissemination of reporting by journalists or news organizations for reasons that are not permitted by extant World Assembly legislation,

Believing that these problems significantly weaken the resolution's protections, such that they should be repealed,

Hereby repeals the “Press Freedom Act”
Note: Only votes from TNP WA nations and NPA personnel will be counted. If you do not meet these requirements, please add (non-WA) or something of that effect to your vote.
Voting Instructions:
  • Vote For if you want the Delegate to vote For the resolution.
  • Vote Against if you want the Delegate to vote Against the resolution.
  • Vote Abstain if you want the Delegate to abstain from voting on this resolution.
  • Vote Present if you are personally abstaining from this vote.
Detailed opinions with your vote are appreciated and encouraged!

Against.
One, there is no forum draft.
Two, it's first complaint says that the resolution about press freedoms does not provide adequate protections of press freedoms. There is no elaboration.
Three, it claims that the resolution [does not] prohibit member states from restricting the dissemination of reporting by journalists or news organizations for reasons that are not permitted by extant World Assembly legislation, when in fact article one of the resolution does exactly that, considering most information tends to be interesting to the public.
Finally, there is clearly no thought-out replacement, due to a lack of forum drafting.

I am against this repeal. There are some very weak reasons presented in this piece of legislation. One of them is so broad so as to be useless, because a lack of adequate protections can be alleged of just about any resolution. The other is based in what the target does not do, rather than what it positively does, and an argument of that kind is seldom appropriate, since it is always possible to just pass more legislation, addressing the apparent voids. Also, the repeal was not drafted on the forums, which always inclines me to disfavour it.

Further noting that the resolution does not prohibit member states from restricting the dissemination of reporting by journalists or news organizations for reasons that are not permitted by extant World Assembly legislation,
It literally does? What? Against.

The arguments are incredibly weak, and there was no on-site drafting. Against.
