Cameras flashed, and reporters shouted her name as Vera hurriedly exited the car and made her way into the building. The hallway too way lined with aides and staffers all of who when she passed gave her polite nods and others short greetings of "Good afternoon, Comrade Minister." as she passed. Making her way down to the elevators, she pressed the call button and stood silently as the hallway bustled, packed full of scurrying diplomats and security staff. Briefly feeling a tap on her shoulder, Vera quickly turned her head to face the delay.

"Comrade Fedorova." Squeaked the little, thin man that stood just behind her.

"Yes Comarade Zaytsev?" Vera said, looking back to the elevator and watching as the floor number quickly began to drop.

"I have the Summit agenda and your conference notes from this month as you requested." Zaytsev took off the satchel bag which he was carrying and pulled two yellow envelopes labeled accordingly, and handed them to Vera, who tucked them tightly under her right armpit as she prepared to board the now open elevator.

"Thank you, Comrade. I'll see you when today's session is over." Vera raised her left hand and waved a quick goodbye as she entered the elevator. As the metal doors closed, Zaytsev gave a quick wave then quickly hurried off as the doors to the lift closed.
The soft harmonic hum of the elevator put Vera at ease as she accended the floors to the summit room. Quickly making the sign of the cross, Vera said a quick prayer and mumbled to herself a particular verse she had remembered from the scriptures.

"But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”

Vera took very deep breaths, trying to control her nerves. She had only been appointed less than three months ago to the position of Foreign Minister and yet she still felt unprepared for the monumentally important task held before her. The territory which she treaded in was completely new, the old style of diplomacy that her mentor Alexei Menshev, was tossed into the waste bin. Much to the chagrin of anyone with a hardline bone in their body, although most of those folks were too busy getting their bones broken to care. She would be the new face of a Reformed Rayvostoka, a more palatable and swallowable arrangement than those before.

The elevator let out a loud ping, announcing itself as it reached its designated floor. Quickly putting on her best, "friendship smile" Vera took a deep breath and prepared to step into the deep end.

"So you're really doing this." A fairly wispy, disgruntled man, bespectacled, stood opposite Redethegn Alfred Frome. It would be wrong to say Frome towered over him, but they hardly spoke as equals.

"Your point?" Frome was unsettled by his deputy minister's disbelief. They were going to meet the delegation in ten minutes - maybe a little optimism was in order. "We're here to thaw the cold climate between this country and theirs. A few handshakes, mildly polite gestures and a lot of angry moderates. Win-win, whatever happens - and who knows, the Rayvostokans may prove true."

The minister leant forward slightly. "You do realise who you're dealing with? They may prove true, you say? This is hardly a deal with the Union. Jeremy has had qualms with far less undemocratic partners than the one you're shaking the hands of. Be careful."

Frome shrugged him off, muttering behind him "of what?"

A reply came quickly. "Whether the hand you shake is clean or bloody."

--

Frome himself now entered the room a couple of minutes early. Polite, after all, not to leave the people who've travelled several hundred kilometres to be here waiting. Looking around, he saw the sheer number of security guards around - more than usual, more than when he'd hosted delegations from most other countries. Presumably just his mind thinking things, though, he told himself.

Noticing a particularly close guard to his left, he shifted a few spaces and spoke directly to him. "Sir.", came the call from the guard, a fairly nondescript man, watching Frome stop a few spaces away.

Almost predicting Frome's question, from his changing body language - a mixture of confusion and interest - the guard responded again, "Sir, under the direct order of Forethegn Harold Osborne." Looks like Harold wasn't all too convinced yet if he was sending his delegation to meet a new friend just yet.

Moving on, he glanced at the lift in front of him, before the ambassador to Rayvostoka came from behind him. A slightly eccentric older man - an unenviable job warrants an unenviable man, Frome thought - stood next to Alfred. "Don't look too jovial", reminded Frome to this older man, "we're at a meeting, not a parlour game, and whoever comes out of those lift doors is hardly our friend just yet." This went unnoticed.

With the lift doors opening in front, a woman stepped out, an expression of what Alfred would describe a "tempered glass smile." - strong but see-through. Frome hoped to put her at ease, so replicated this smile, as the ambassador stepped forward.

With a strong Asthonic accent, the ambassador warmly said "Welcome into Esthursia," standing forward, hand out to shake. Frome stood back slightly, still vaguely smiling.

Vera took his hand, shaking it. His handshake was firm yet gentle; from a first glance he was a well-put-together man, confident in his abilities. She sized him up while speaking to him, as she had done many times before.

"Thank you, Comrade Minister Frome, I am glad I can finally meet you in person. After all this time, I would like to thank you for receiving me and my delegation with such warmth and hospitality."

Vera's eyes quickly scanned the room, seeing the men and women seated at the large conference table behind Frome chatting among one another, shooting quick glances at her and Frome. She could see the skepticism on a few but the interest on many, just as she hoped.

Frome looked back at Vera, nodding subtly at her passing remark.

"Likewise, I trust. After all, we're far more a hospitable people than our reputations precede."

The ambassador interrupted both of them before either could continue the welcomes; "come on down, let's sit ourselves down and hammer out something to show our publics." Frome sighed slightly, tutting at the overly forward nature of this intelligent yet clearly a tad... unhinged counterpart, but nodded slightly in acceptance. "Let's."

Both sat down in their respective places, Frome opening his briefcase to prepare some papers.
"Right... where was I-yes, here it is. Paperwork and that."
Putting them back away ordered, he started:
"To business. The Esthursian nation has long looked for stability, something that this sorry continent has often... missed. I'd hardly even call it a continent with the amount of divisions in it at this point." A man sat opposite wrongly assumes a joke, stifles some artificial laughter until confused glares by his counterparts silences him.
"It's about time that we really formalise our diplomatic relations with you folks. Frankly, there are very few nations sane enough in this continent to avert war and conflict, and the recent constitutional restructuring your nation is conducting has made me comfortable enough to seek some form of embassy exchange, formalised relations, the like. How does that sound to you?" The ambassador chips in; "I'd agree, but before we keep on, I first need to remind our Rayvostokan friend here that the progress we make today depends quite a lot on the scale of
continue reforms they're instituting; after all, certain parts of Rayvostoka really do weigh on our minds as we open these relations here."

Frome prepares to look skeptically again, but actually realises the validity of this, nodding slightly. "Quite right, thank you, Ambassador Johnston."

Vera smiled, removing her papers from the yellow envelopes and placing them on the table.

"On the topic of reforms, as you may already know, Rayvostoka is currently preparing for and enacting internal and foreign policy changes. For example, just a few months ago, Comrade General Secretary Denvikov announced the closure of "re-education facilities." Alongside that, she dictated the release of those imprisoned and set up programs for them to claim government assistance." Vera shifted forward in her seat.

"And I am happy to announce to you all, in the terms of foreign policy changes, the General Secretary has decided that it would be best to discontinue previous practices by former governments, in the form of refusal to recognize the titles of monarchs and cooperate with those not specifically aligned with national dogma. I would hope that satisfies your concerns for now, but I will also mention that in the coming weeks and months, more reforms will be announced, including the dismantling and reorganization of state-owned farming operations in favor of your standard Cooperatives and family-owned plantations and farms." Looking at her notes, Vera shifted the conversation.

"Now that I've eased your concerns, establishing an embassy and formalizing relations sound excellent. My government seeks to expand relations with our Aurorian neighbors and put ourselves on better terms. Especially when looking at the present situation of Eras, as you mentioned earlier. Besides those first two, I have a few other things we may discuss, including a possible trade deal, the multiple conflicts afflicting our shared region, future relations with the United Aurourian States..." Vera paused and removed a pen from her breast pocket, circling a few key things in her notes. Putting the pen down, she looked back up at Frome.

"My apologies." She continued. "We would like to speak on improving relations with the United Auroean States, the involvement of Prydania in Auroria and vice versa alongside discussions of the International Workers Association and the Socialist Collective Assembly if we have time."

After Finishing, Vera sat a little farther back, more relaxed than before. This was her element, her time to shine and prove herself to these foreigners and her boss back home.

Alfred leant forwards slightly. The... confidence, bravado even, intrigued him.

"We will be the judges of whether our legitimate concerns are eased, my friend." The ambassador noted the sudden turn in Frome's tone, and determined his presence was necessary, hurriedly beginning to respond:
"Right. Your topics interest us. To come to us as a way to get in with the UAS? Novel, I appreciate your government seeks a thawing of relations, and although my nation is happy to take this opportunity, I'm sure other nations may have their reservations. It's just a case of whether you can convince everyone else of what you've convinced us to do to a degree, rather than using us as an intermediary."

Frome interrupted. "Why Prydania, I must ask? My knowledge on Prydania isn't the most verbose or in depth, so do catch me up on exactly what your nation has against such a far off nation. I'd be happy to take your concerns on board to the Forethegn, because let me be frank, any semblance of selfish - that's an important distinction - influence from far-off powers shouldn't be tolerated here - we've got enough to deal with natively."

He sat up slightly. "About the IWA, this government doesn't think it right for itself to take part in an international party political alliance. It's just not in the pragmatic national interest to hold dogmatic belief in that way - if we did, this meeting would be improbable.

As for your reforms... it'll take time. The lack of democratic elections will always be a hindrance, as you can understand. However, we're broadly satisfied with the progress your government sent you here to present. It's the right direction, and that's a rarity on these Aurorias, frankly - and justifies your being here, save my bluntness." The ambassador cut him off once again, sensing a second slight tonal shift.
"So, do go on. What is it you wish exactly for our two thedes-nations, pardon my Atlish, to cooperate on in terms on foreign policy, over Prydania, and, well even the UAS?"

"Understand, the people of Rayvostoka accept the current state of affairs fully and have sufficed well under the current system, although I will not get into that now. But to answer your question, the Presidium wonders whether Prydanian actions in these Aurorias have gone too far. And whether or not their recent meddling in both of our affairs deserves some sort of unified response. Although this response would not be one of aggression but more of an opening for a conversation about Prydania's role in the Aurorias and a clarification on intention."

Looking at her notes, Vera scribbled down a few potential talking points.

"Now, on the UAS, the Presidium and General Secretary hope to work together with Esthursia to build a good rapport and stronger ties with our neighbors. We hope that if we can build up that relationship, future dealings and talks will go much smoother and prove more fruitful. The Presidium and people of Rayvostoka hope for a more united and stable Auroria, which is less hostile and more cohesive than previously. It also would like, if possible, to prevent the emergence of an Aurorian hegemon after the eventual end of the Suadivici conflict. But in total, we believe that with your assistance, we can together build an advantageous position for each other's nations and all the nations of Auroria as well."

Vera quickly remembered something.

"Ah, and for the IWA, that was not much of an issue, more of an inquiry by my government."

Frome sat forward at the mention of Aurorian hegemony. Glancing at his ambassador and rearranging his papers quickly, he began.
"No thede in Auroria will be allowed to be a hegemon while the UAS is alive and kicking. Esthursia will do everything in its power to prevent the formation of any hegemony - frankly, the Imperium was concerning us until the recent... situations. It's almost as if its nationalists took the claims of hegemony and power too literally over there.

We'd be more than open to Rayvostokan cooperation in the effort to maintain Aurorian plurality - after all, all states who claim hegemony, most notably the so-called Aurorea, are enemies of this state."

Moving back again, he continued. "I am sure a thawing of the relations between our nations, a comprehensive programme of reduced tariffs and duties, and hopefully an even more comprehensive trade deal over our industries, would cement that bond that both our nations will do what it takes to prevent one single nation using its power to subjugate a continent. The situation depends entirely on how the Imperium responds to its own civil war. The first step of that, since I'm satisfied your reforms are sincere, is formalising relations between our two nations, which I'm happy to sign off here and now."

"That would be fantastic. I am extremely pleased with today's results. This meeting has proved to be more successful than most previous Rayvostokan foreign engagements by a large margin."
Vera's plastic smile shifted into a more genuine one.

"I believe this relationship will build a bridge from Rayvostoka to the rest of the world. So finally, Rayvostoka can be allowed back onto the international stage and into the good graces of its neighbors, which it has dearly missed." Vera stood sorting her materials, turning them under her left arm.

"So I must once again say Comrades, thank you. Thank you for your open-mindedness, and thank you for your bravery. Truly you men are heroes and inspirations to all. The Suadivici and the Atheians would do well to learn from you and imitate your goodwill and hospitality."
She reached out for a parting handshake.
"Comrade?"
