Chapter 1: The Demise of a Nation
Many terms have been used to describe the unfortunate events in what was formerly known as "Ringworld One." Among the polite ones were "freak accident," "antimatter meltdown," "rogue wormhole," and a "supernatural act." Many people were watching the Galactic Parliament's live broadcast. And yet, not many of them would publicly admit what has happened to our republic. The hard truth is that the United Stars is no more.
The alliances, federations, and interstellar communities that made up the United Stars have begun to consolidate their respective authority. Areas of once united USG space will be carved by the former constituent states. They will tell you, Citizen, if that word still means anything, that your dead republic is still alive. It is easier that way. Business must continue as usual. Otherwise, chaos and panic will reign.
It is bad enough that we lost the capital and, along with it, the majority of what kept the United Stars really united. Keeping the rest of us from jostling for no good reason is not immoral. The need for transparency can be looked over in this regard. Over predictable time, the different civilizations of the fallen republic will have to accept their new responsibilities. The stars may shine in different colors once more.
Or will destiny smile upon us again and help us form a stronger union? One that could withstand the fools who dream of absolute power.
There is no doubt that the actions of those traitors led by the Supreme Tribune in the Federation Forces will be felt far and wide, for ages to come. The question now is what will they do next?
