Klaus kept wondering where he’d be taken. Somewhere close? Somewhere not so close? The rattle and gear changes of the army truck shook the man out of his head. He looked up from his boots at the soldier across him. He was a brick house of a man. His army fatigues barely fit him. Predicean. Klaus gave the man a slight smile. The stern face returned nothing. Klaus figured as much, but there was no harm in being cordial. The truck’s brakes whined as they brought the vehicle to a stop. The predicean soldier motioned for Klaus to get out. Klaus was more than happy to oblige. The back of army trucks were not exactly built for comfort. As soon as he parted the flap and got out, the sun blinded him for a moment before he saw it. A large prison camp. Barbed wire. Tall fences. Watch towers everywhere.

“Vai avanti,” the large fellow behind him insisted, giving him a light push. Klaus understood perfectly. He gave curt nods and thanks to the guards opening the gates for him. He and his escort made their way down the main thoroughfare to the heart of the camp. Fellow prisoners started lining up on the fence to see the newcomer. Klaus could already see the main administration building. There stood a man, waiting expectedly. Klaus got a good look at him as he walked down the short steps of the porch. He was short, broad, and slightly balding at the top. He also saw that he was Colonel. Klaus came to an abrupt stop and saluted.

“Captain Klaus Boelter reporting for prison,” Klaus stated with a grin. The Predicean colonel returned the salute. The Predicean soldier who had been escorting Klaus handed the colonel a clipboard. He signed off on a document before responding in perfect Yalkaner.

“Yes, yes, our new pilot. Unfortunately the only flying being done around here is by the mosquitos. I am Colonel Stefano Vertacello. The camp’s warden. I will only say this once. If you plan on escaping, you better make it a good attempt, because there are no second chances here. Understood?”

“As an officer it is my duty to res-”

“I am well aware of your sworn oaths, Captain. But once this war is over. And it will be over soon. They will be for naught. Welcome to your new home. Good morning.”

Colonel Vertacello handed Klaus his papers, which assigned him to his block before returning to the administration building. The large Predicean soldier motioned for Klaus to move. He chuckled at the exchange before walking on.

“It’ll be over soon eh?” Klaus muttered to himself with a laugh. Not as soon as you think he thought to himself.
