Resignation Sparks a Rat Race for Leanha Milemkt
Since his election to the position of leader of the Nua Nasjonal Parti (NNP) in 2005, George Roberts has successfully lead his party from the position as the main opposition to win electoral victories in three consecutive election, in 2008, 2013 and 2018. With it bringing in an end to 15 years of Daonesker Orbeibri Parti (DOP) control of the Montonget and causing the parties worst electoral defeat since the 1960 election. During his time as Ulstome's Ceannaire na Mais his governments had overseen vast changes in Ulstome, from foreign policy by placing Ulstome alongside its Gotic brethren as a member of the Pan-Gotic Union. To great infrastructure projects through the construction of the two continental tunnels which firmly linked the island of Ulstome to the Icenia mainland, and in doing so had improved transportation across the channel greatly for both individuals and firms. He brought back powers which had been devolved in the "Acts of Devolved Powers" 1989-1990 from the Montongets of Haradren and Koiledra, strengthening the authority of the central government to bring the regions of Ulstome forward into a prosperous future along a common path. These were the main three achievements of his over 10 years in office of his various successes and progress which he had brought to the nation.
Now, after his great success both for party and for nation he has announced that he will be resigning from his position as Ceannaire na Mais to national news sources yesterday.
"Every man has his family, his family is the mans home, his future and his dream. I have worked tirelessly at this position of public office, which has been a great honour to do so, to better this nation and her people. However to do so I have sacrificed the greatest duty of every man and every father, to be there for his family. This position is tiring and the work is relentless and so I have neglected my duty as both a man and a proud father. I have neglected my family to serve this country. I had to choose between my duty as a father and my duty to public office and I have chosen to spend time with my family and be the best father I can be. It is for this reason that it is with a heavy heart that I must leave this position that I have grown to love over the many long years I have been here at the Leanha Milemkt. I will remain as a member of the Montonget but I shall cease to participate as a member of the government."
^Quote from George Roberts's announcement on resigning for his position
The leadership of George Roberts within the Montonget has lead to the rise of several key individuals onto the political stage through their membership and participation as part of the NNP with a large amount of the parties new politicians coming in being previously from non political professions prior to their election. Individuals such as Harold von Vannestein, Conor Owen and Julia Brenton who have all served in Government since the parties 2008 electoral victory and are the main potential candidates who are expected to succeed George Roberts due to the parties previous success and growing popularity. However with the departure of George Roberts some backbench members may try to enter the race.
In order for a candidate to enter the process they must receive at least ten endorsements from NNP members of the Montonget (MMs). This initial phase will take place over a three week period after which no new candidates will be able to enter the process. There will then be a series of voting rounds where NNP members of the Montonget and the Muhuskenet will cast a series of votes with the candidate with the least amount of votes being eliminated from the process. This will continue until only two candidates are left, at which point all NNP party members prior to the start of the process can vote for their preferred candidate. The candidate with the most votes will become the new Ceannaire na Mais of Ulstome.
